At the same time, however, visual illusions and misjudgments have been cited as the probable cause of numerous aviation accidents, and in spite of technological and instructional efforts to remedy some of the problems associated with visual perception in aviation, mishaps of this type continue to occur. Clearly, understanding the role of visual perception in aviation is key to improving pilot performance and reducing aviation mishaps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military aviation night vision systems greatly enhance the capability to operate during periods of low illumination. After flying with night vision devices, most aviators are apprehensive about returning to unaided night flight. Current night vision imaging devices allow aviators to fly during ambient light conditions which would be extremely dangerous, if not impossible, with unaided vision. However, the visual input afforded with these devices does not approach that experienced using the unencumbered, unaided eye during periods of daylight illumination. Many visual parameters, e.g., acuity, field-of-view, depth perception, etc., are compromised when night vision devices are used. The inherent characteristics of image intensification based sensors introduce new problems associated with the interpretation of visual information based on different spatial and spectral content from that of unaided vision. In addition, the mounting of these devices onto the helmet is accompanied by concern of fatigue resulting from increased head supported weight and shift in center-of- gravity. All of these concerns have produced numerous human factors and safety issues relating to the use of night vision systems. These issues are identified and discussed in terms of their possible effects on user performance and safety.

Book excerpt: Sunglasses and sunvisors affect vision, but can they actually improve it? The effects of sunglasses on vision were modeled considering: (1) Duntley and Middelton's theoretical treatment of the propagation of light through the atmosphere; (2) the dependence of light scatter on wavelength; (3) Blackwell's extensive Tiffany data base describing human visual sensitivity to incremental, contrasting spot stimuli; and (4) human spectral sensitivity. With these factors, sunglass and visor characteristics were identified that maximize the range for detection of small objects. The ideal sunglass or visor thus identified increases the range at which objects can be detected by an average of 5% compared to the naked eye. By comparison, the standard 12% neutral filter currently used for aviator sunglasses decreases naked eye range by about 5%. This paper provides a theoretical framework that could be used in the design and evaluation of sunglasses and visors in environments where vision is critical.

Until recently, the simulation of natural environments has been limited first of all by the pixel resolution of visual displays. Visual simulation of those natural environments has also been limited by the scarcity of detailed and accurate physical descriptions of them. Our aim has been to change all that. To this end, many of us have labored in adjacent fields of psych- ogy, engineering, human factors, and computer science. Our efforts in these areas were occasioned by a single question: how distantly can fast-jet pilots discern the aspect angle of an opposing aircraft, in visual simulation? This question needs some ela- ration: it concerns fast jets, because those simulations involve the representation of high speeds over wide swaths of landscape. It concerns pilots, since they begin their careers with above-average acuity of vision, as a population. And it concerns aspect angle, which is as much as to say that the three-dimensional orientation of an opposing aircraft relative to one’s own, as revealed by motion and solid form. v vi Preface The single question is by no means simple. It demands a criterion for eye-limiting resolution in simulation. That notion is a central one to our study, though much abused in general discussion.
