Book Visibility of Radiant Energy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Visibility of Radiant Energy Classic Reprint written by K. S. Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visibility of Radiant Energy It is Obvious from the meaning Of the term that the measure ment of relative visibility necessitates the measurement of rela tive spectral luminosity and relative spectral radiant power. Since the measurement Of relative luminosity can be made, directly or indirectly, only by some photometric method, any peculiarity Of this method should be intimately connected with the form of the visibility curve. Book The Pathological Effects of Radiant Energy on the Eye

Download or read book The Pathological Effects of Radiant Energy on the Eye written by F. H. Verhoeff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathological Effects of Radiant Energy on the Eye: An Experimental Investigation All radiant energy is at present believed to consist of transverse vibrations in the hypothetical ether, all propagated at the same rate and differing only in amplitude and wave length, hence in frequency, which is the reciprocal of wave length. The uniform propagation rate in vacuo is very nearly km. Per second and the wave lengths so far as ordinarily dealt with range from about 01 to about 0002 mm. For ordinary purposes no attention need be paid to the extremely long wave lengths ranging to 1 mm., to the extremely short ones between 0001 and 0002 mm., or to the enormously shorter one still of the order of magnitude of 0000001 111m. Such as the X-rays are believed to be. For the very long waves are not present in material amount in the radiation from ordinary sources. The very short ones are absorbed by a few cm. Or dm. Of air, and the X-rays are practically only produced in apparatus intended for that purpose. The spectra given by all ordinary sources range between the more modest limits just given. In the earlier literature this spectral range used to be divided into heat rays, light rays, and actinic rays, a distinction wholly artificial since the three effects implied are far from being sharply defined. More generally the whole range is divided into the infra red portion, not ordinarily visible and extending from the longest waves to those of about 760 1111, the visible spectrum, extending from about 7601111 to about 395 and the ultra violet portion reaching from 395 up to' the neighborhood of 200 ma. This distinction is not rigorous or with sharp limits. While artificial distinctions have led to many misunderstandings,1_ all radiation of Whatever wave length is convertible into heat wheri absorbed by material bodies and may produce chemical changes as well. As a matter of fact these latter show a general tendency to increase with the frequency of the oscilla tions, so that chemical changes are rare in the infra red and increasingly frequent as one approaches the extreme ultra violet. It is this tend ency that is shown in the pathological changes which may be caused in living cells by the incidence of radiation. Download or read book The Tiger and the Shark written by Bruce R. Wheaton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-07-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twentieth century brought about the rejection by physicists of the doctrine of determinism - the belief that complete knowledge of the initial conditions of an interaction in nature allows precise and unambiguous prediction of the outcome. This book traces the origins of a central problem leading to this change in viewpoint and paradoxes raised by attempts to formulate a consistent theory of the nature of light. It outlines the different approaches adopted by members of different national cultures to the apparent inconsistencies, explains why Einstein's early (1905) attempt at a resolution was not taken seriously for fifteen years, and describes the mixture of ideas that created a route to a new, antideterministic formulation of the laws of nature. Dr Wheaton describes the experimental work on the new forms of radiation found at the turn of the century and shows how the interpretation of energy transfer from X-rays to matter gradually transformed a classical wave explanation of light to one based on particle like quanta of energy, and further, he explains how influential scientists came reluctantly to accept a wavelike interpretation of matter as well. This new and distinctively different account of one of the major theoretical shifts in modern physical thought will be of fundamental interest to physical scientists and philosophers, as well as to historians of science.

Download or read book From Paradox to Reality written by Fritz Rohrlich and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-08-25 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses, in clear non technical language, the two major theories of twentieth-century physics: relativity and quantum mechanics. They are discussed conceptually and philosophically, rather than using mathematics, and the philosophical issues raised pertain to much of science, not only physics. The book is based on successful courses taught by the author, who shows how new discoveries forced physicists to accept often strange and unconventional notions. He aims to remove the mystery and misrepresentation that often surround the ideas of modern physics and to show how modern scientists construct theories. In this way, the reader can appreciate their successes and failures and understand problems which are as yet unsolved.

This book was released on 1996-06-06 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in fascinating detail the variety of experiments sponsored by the U.S. government in which human subjects were exposed to radiation, often without their knowledge or consent. Based on a review of hundreds of thousands of heretofore unavailable or classified documents, this Report tells a gripping story of the intricate relationship between science and the state.Under the thick veil of government secrecy, researchers conducted experiments that ranged from the mundane to such egregious violations as administering radioactive tracers to mentally retarded teenagers, injecting plutonium into hospital patients, and intentionally releasing radiation into the environment. This volume concludes with a discussion of the Committee's key findings and guidelines for changes in institutional review boards, ethics rules and policies, and balancing national security interests with individual rights. Ethicists, public health professionals and those interested in the history of medicine and Cold War history will be intrigued by the findings of this landmark report.
