Book excerpt: A complete analysis of the steady flow states of swirling flows in diverging (or converging) pipes was developed. The uniqueness of the steady flow state in a certain swirl range was rigorously proved by using nonlinear functional analysis. The co-existence of multiple steady states of swirling flows in diverging (or converging) pipes for the swirl beyond the uniqueness range were demonstrated numerically. A complete global bifurcation diagram of the flow steady state was also developed by using computational methods. By using the steady flow states obtained by the research described above one may investigate the linear stability of the steady-state flow in various swirl ranges. Due to limited scope of this research, detailed stability analysis will be carried out in future. This research will lead to a deeper understanding of the instability mechanism of the swirling flow in a diverging (or converging) pipe.

Book excerpt: The problem of unsteady viscous incompressible flow in a two-dimensional cavity is treated using the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with various initial and boundary conditions. First the case of a square cavity with one inlet and one outlet is treated in steady and unsteady flows. The software package ANSYS FLUENT was used in the CFD simulations. This approach captures the appearance of separation bubbles and vortex formation inside the cavity. Steady state flows are also obtained from the unsteady simulations after convergence of the time dependent solutions. Then the case of a cavity with a synthetic jet and two outlets is treated, where a complex configuration of vortices and bubbles form in the cavity.

The results of the investigation also have a bearing on the stability of flow in the core of swirling flows in stationary ducts and free vortices. Solid body rotation is found to have a destabilizing effect when superposed on a pipe entrance region axial velocity profile. The range of swirl ratios up to four is investigated using two different approaches: dye streaks visualization and hot-thermistor anemometry. As the swirl ratio is increased from zero to four, the axial Reynolds number at which laminar flow breaks down decreases from 2500 to 900. These results agree in trend with the limit axial Reynolds number value of 82.9 that was recently obtained by analytical investigations of the stability of a viscous fully developed axial velocity profile subject to a rapid, almost rigid rotation in pipes. The present results also suggest that the destabilizing trend due to solid body rotation may also hold for other axial velocity profiles and indicates a possible new mechanism of confined flow instability that takes place at lower Reynolds numbers than previously believed possible.
