Download or read book Transport and Mixing in Laminar Flows written by Roman Grigoriev and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers from academia and industry with an up-to-date overview of important advances in the field, dealing with such fundamental fluid mechanics problems as nonlinear transport phenomena and optimal control of mixing at the micro- and nanoscale. The editors provide both in-depth knowledge of the topic as well as vast experience in guiding an expert team of authors. The review style articles offer a coherent view of the micromixing methods, resulting in a much-needed synopsis of the theoretical models needed to direct experimental research and establish engineering principles for future applications. Since these processes are governed by nonlinear phenomena, this book will appeal to readers from both communities: fluid mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.
Download or read book Oscillations of a Liquid in a Rotating Cylinder Part I Solid Body Rotation written by C. W Kitchens (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For application to liquid-filled shell problems, the natural frequencies and decay rates of oscillations of liquids during spin-up in filled rotating cylinders are calculated. In this first part only the fully spun-up flow, i.e., solid-body rotation, is considered. Nevertheless, this part describes in detail the method of solution for the general case of spin-up, and presents results which check with experimental and previous theoretical data closely enough to confirm the reliability of the computational procedure. Data are shown which illustrate the variation of the eigenfrequencies of a disturbance mode with Reynolds number and aspect ratio of the cylinder. This work treats the viscous perturbation equations for flow of a rotating fluid. An eigenvalue problem results, defined by a sixth-order system which is integrated using the orthonormalization technique. (Author).

Download or read book Propagation in Systems Far from Equilibrium written by Jose E. Wesfreid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroscopic physics provides us with a great variety of pattern-forming systems displaying propagation phenomena, from reactive fronts in combustion, to wavy structures in convection and to shear flow instabilities in hydrodynamics. These proceedings record progress in this rapidly expanding field. The contributions have the following major themes: - The problems of velocity selection and front morphology of propagating interfaces in multiphase media, with emphasis on recent theoretical and experimental results on dendritic crystal growth, Saffman-Taylor fingering, directional solidification and chemical waves. - The "unfolding" of large-scale, low-frequency behavior in weakly confined homogeneous systems driven far from equilibrium, and more specifically, the envelope approach to the mathematical description of textures in different cases: steady cells, propagating waves, structural defects, and phase instabilities. - The implications of the presence of global downstream transport in open flows for the nature, convective or absolute, of shear flow instabilities, with applications to real boundary layer flows or shear layers, as reported in contributions covering experimental situations of fundamental and/or engineering interest.
