Book Viscous Flow Computations in Turbomachine Cascades

Download or read book Viscous Flow Computations in Turbomachine Cascades written by P.-A. Chevrin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate prediction of the flow in turbomachinery requires numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. A two-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver developed at ONERA for the calculation of the flow in turbine and compressor cascades was adapted at SNECMA to run on different types of grid. The solver uses an explicit, time-marching, finite-volume technique, with a multigrid acceleration scheme. A multi-domain approach is used to handle difficulties due to the geometry of the flow. An H-C grid was used in the calculations. Two turbulence models, based on the mixing length approach, were used. The flow in a transonic compressor cascade, a subsonic and a transonic turbine cascade were computed. Comparison with experiments is presented.

Book Development of a Locally Mass Flux Conservative Computer Code for Calculating 3 D Viscous Flow in Turbomachines

Download or read book Development of a Locally Mass Flux Conservative Computer Code for Calculating 3 D Viscous Flow in Turbomachines written by Leonard Walitt and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The VANS successive approximation numerical method has been extended to the computation of 3-D, viscous, transonic flows in turbomachines. The principal development reported herein is the generation of a cross-sectional computer code, which conserves mass flux at each point of the cross-sectional surface of computation. In the VANS numerical method, the cross-sectional computation follows a blade-to-blade calculation. The VANS blade-to-blade code was developed earlier. Numerical calculations were made for an axial annular turbine cascade and a transonic, centrifugal impeller with splitter vanes. The subsonic turbine cascade computation was generated in blade-to-blade surfaces to evaluate the accuracy of the blade-to-blade mode of marching. Calculated blade pressures at the hub, mid, and tip radii of the cascade agreed with corresponding measurements. The transonic impeller computation was conducted to test the newly developed locally mass flux conservative cross-sectional computer code. Both blade-to-blade and cross-sectional modes of calculation were implemented for this problem. A triple point shock structure was computed in the inducer region of the impeller. In addition, time-averaged shroud static pressures generally agreed with measured shroud pressures. Two principal conclusions are drawn from this research effort: the blade-to-blade computation produces a useful engineering flow field in regions of subsonic relative flow, and cross-sectional computation, with a locally mass flux conservative continuity equation, is required to compute the shock waves in regions of supersonic relative flow. Book Aerothermodynamics of Turbomachinery

Download or read book Aerothermodynamics of Turbomachinery written by Naixing Chen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is now an essential and effective tool used in the design of all types of turbomachine, and this topic constitutes the main theme of this book. With over 50 years of experience in the field of aerodynamics, Professor Naixing Chen has developed a wide range of numerical methods covering almost the entire spectrum of turbomachinery applications. Moreover, he has also made significant contributions to practical experiments and real-life designs. The book focuses on rigorous mathematical derivation of the equations governing flow and detailed descriptions of the numerical methods used to solve the equations. Numerous applications of the methods to different types of turbomachine are given and, in many cases, the numerical results are compared to experimental measurements. These comparisons illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the methods – a useful guide for readers. Lessons for the design of improved blading are also indicated after many applications. Presents real-world perspective to the past, present and future concern in turbomachinery Covers direct and inverse solutions with theoretical and practical aspects Demonstrates huge application background in China Supplementary instructional materials are available on the companion website Aerothermodynamics of Turbomachinery: Analysis and Design is ideal for senior undergraduates and graduates studying in the fields of mechanics, energy and power, and aerospace engineering; design engineers in the business of manufacturing compressors, steam and gas turbines; and research engineers and scientists working in the areas of fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer. Book Solution Procedures for Accurate Numerical Simulations of Flow in Turbomachinery Cascades

Download or read book Solution Procedures for Accurate Numerical Simulations of Flow in Turbomachinery Cascades written by W. T Thompkins (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years the authors have been evaluating and developing numerical simulation schemes for compressible, two dimensional inviscid or viscous flows in turbomachinery cascades. Numerical schemes considered, all originally classified as time-marching schemes, include: 1) implicit approximate factorization schemes; 2) explicit schemes due to MacCormack; 3) explicit central difference schemes; and 4) the mult-grid scheme of Ni. As we develop these schemes we came to believe that the accuracy of computational results is relatively insensitive to the numerical algorithm chosen but highly sensitive to implementation details such as boundary conditions, consistent flux balancing, grid resolution and numerical smoothing. To illustrate our viewpoint, we present an examination of the relationship between a flux balancing interpretation of the control volume conservation laws and various finite difference formulations and comparisons of the performance of these schemes on three test problems: Ni's bump in a channel, a supersonic nozzle, and flow in a supercritical compressor cascade.
