Book An Introduction To Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear PDE with Applications to Calculus of Variations in L

Download or read book An Introduction To Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear PDE with Applications to Calculus of Variations in L written by Nikos Katzourakis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a quick and elementary, yet rigorous, presentation of the rudiments of the so-called theory of Viscosity Solutions which applies to fully nonlinear 1st and 2nd order Partial Differential Equations (PDE). For such equations, particularly for 2nd order ones, solutions generally are non-smooth and standard approaches in order to define a "weak solution" do not apply: classical, strong almost everywhere, weak, measure-valued and distributional solutions either do not exist or may not even be defined. The main reason for the latter failure is that, the standard idea of using "integration-by-parts" in order to pass derivatives to smooth test functions by duality, is not available for non-divergence structure PDE.

Book Sobolev and Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations

Download or read book Sobolev and Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations written by N. V. Krylov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on first boundary-value problems for fully nonlinear second-order uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We look for solutions in Sobolev classes, local or global, or for viscosity solutions. Most of the auxiliary results, such as Aleksandrov's elliptic and parabolic estimates, the Krylov–Safonov and the Evans–Krylov theorems, are taken from old sources, and the main results were obtained in the last few years. Presentation of these results is based on a generalization of the Fefferman–Stein theorem, on Fang-Hua Lin's like estimates, and on the so-called “ersatz” existence theorems, saying that one can slightly modify “any” equation and get a “cut-off” equation that has solutions with bounded derivatives. These theorems allow us to prove the solvability in Sobolev classes for equations that are quite far from the ones which are convex or concave with respect to the Hessians of the unknown functions. In studying viscosity solutions, these theorems also allow us to deal with classical approximating solutions, thus avoiding sometimes heavy constructions from the usual theory of viscosity solutions.

Book Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces

Download or read book Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces written by Nikolaĭ Vladimirovich Krylov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures concentrate on fundamentals of the modern theory of linear elliptic and parabolic equations in H older spaces. Krylov shows that this theory - including some issues of the theory of nonlinear equations - is based on some general and extremely powerful ideas and some simple computations. The main object of study is the first boundary-value problems for elliptic and parabolic equations, with some guidelines concerning other boundary-value problems such as the Neumann or oblique derivative problems or problems involving higher-order elliptic operators acting on the boundary. Numerical approximations are also discussed. This book, containing 200 exercises, aims to provide a good understanding of what kind of results are available and what kinds of techniques are used to obtain them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume comprises five extended surveys on the recent theory of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear partial differential equations, and some of its most relevant applications to optimal control theory for deterministic and stochastic systems, front propagation, geometric motions and mathematical finance. The volume forms a state-of-the-art reference on the subject of viscosity solutions, and the authors are among the most prominent specialists. Potential readers are researchers in nonlinear PDE's, systems theory, stochastic processes.

Book excerpt: Unlike the classical Sturm theorems on the zeros of solutions of second-order ODEs, Sturm's evolution zero set analysis for parabolic PDEs did not attract much attention in the 19th century, and, in fact, it was lost or forgotten for almost a century. Briefly revived by Plya in the 1930's and rediscovered in part several times since, it was not un

Book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States I

Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States I written by W.-M. Ni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years considerable interest has been focused on nonlinear diffu sion problems, the archetypical equation for these being Ut = D.u + f(u). Here D. denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, the solution u = u(x, t) is defined over some space-time domain of the form n x [O,T], and f(u) is a given real function whose form is determined by various physical and mathematical applications. These applications have become more varied and widespread as problem after problem has been shown to lead to an equation of this type or to its time-independent counterpart, the elliptic equation of equilibrium D.u + f(u) = o. Particular cases arise, for example, in population genetics, the physics of nu clear stability, phase transitions between liquids and gases, flows in porous media, the Lend-Emden equation of astrophysics, various simplified com bustion models, and in determining metrics which realize given scalar or Gaussian curvatures. In the latter direction, for example, the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed curvature leads to a ground state problem involving critical exponents. Thus not only analysts, but geome ters as well, can find common ground in the present work. The corresponding mathematical problem is to determine how the struc ture of the nonlinear function f(u) influences the behavior of the solution.

Book On Uniqueness and Existence of Viscosity Solutions of Fully Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic PDE s

Download or read book On Uniqueness and Existence of Viscosity Solutions of Fully Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic PDE s written by Hitoshi Ishii and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We prove several comparison and existence theorems for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. One of them extends some recent uniqueness results by Jensen. Some establish the uniqueness of solutions for second-order Isaacs' equations and hence include the uniqueness results for Bellman equations by P.-L Lions. Our comparison results apply even for discontinuous solutions and so Perron's method readily yields the existence of continuous solutions. Reprints. (mjm).
