Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rigorous connection between viscosity solutions for the Bellman equation in optimal control and the Pontryagin Maximum Principle has been established. The method developed for controlled ordinary differential equations was extended to infinite dimensions to derive the Pontryagin principle for 1) a class of controlled nonlinear evolution equations in a Hilbert space, 2) a class of controlled nonlinear, divergence form parabolic partial differential equations; and 3) a class of differential-difference equations. Additional subjects were studied were the extension of the idea of viscosity solution to equations with only time-measureable Hamiltonians and the optimal cooling of a free boundary problem with Stefan problem dynamics. Two problems of interest in specific applications were solved. The optimal control is characterized in the class of monotone functions which minimizes the H1 distance to a given function. This problem, a specific monotone follower problem, arises in production planning. An optimal portfolio selection problem is considered which includes stock, options, bonds and borrowed cash at an interest rate different from the bond interest rate. This problem is formulated using stochastic optimal control and explicitly constructed the solution of the Bellman equation. The objective of the study was to derive the option price which the market sets to minimize the investor's maximal expected utility of wealth.

Book Optimal Control of Distributed Systems Theory and Applications

Download or read book Optimal Control of Distributed Systems Theory and Applications written by A. V. Fursikov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-11-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the analysis of optimal control problems for systems described by partial differential equations. The book offers simple and clear exposition of main results in this area. The methods proposed by the author cover cases where the controlled system corresponds to well-posed or ill-posed boundary value problems, which can be linear or nonlinear. The uniqueness problem for the solution of nonlinear optimal control problems is analyzed in various settings. Solutions of several previously unsolved problems are given. In addition, general methods are applied to the study of two problems connected with optimal control of fluid flows described by the Navier-Stokes equations.

Book Applied Optimal Control Theory of Distributed Systems

Download or read book Applied Optimal Control Theory of Distributed Systems written by K.A. Lurie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents an extended and substantially revised version of my earlierbook, Optimal Control in Problems ofMathematical Physics, originally published in Russian in 1975. About 60% of the text has been completely revised and major additions have been included which have produced a practically new text. My aim was to modernize the presentation but also to preserve the original results, some of which are little known to a Western reader. The idea of composites, which is the core of the modern theory of optimization, was initiated in the early seventies. The reader will find here its implementation in the problem of optimal conductivity distribution in an MHD-generatorchannel flow.Sincethen it has emergedinto an extensive theory which is undergoing a continuous development. The book does not pretend to be a textbook, neither does it offer a systematic presentation of the theory. Rather, it reflects a concept which I consider as fundamental in the modern approach to optimization of dis tributed systems. Bibliographical notes, though extensive, do not pretend to be exhaustive as well. My thanks are due to ProfessorJean-Louis Armand and ProfessorWolf Stadler whose friendly assistance in translating and polishing the text was so valuable. I am indebted to Mrs. Kathleen Durand and Mrs. Colleen Lewis for the hard job of typing large portions of the manuscript.

Book Coordination Control of Distributed Systems

Download or read book Coordination Control of Distributed Systems written by Jan H. van Schuppen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how control of distributed systems can be advanced by an integration of control, communication, and computation. The global control objectives are met by judicious combinations of local and nonlocal observations taking advantage of various forms of communication exchanges between distributed controllers. Control architectures are considered according to increasing degrees of cooperation of local controllers: fully distributed or decentralized control, control with communication between controllers, coordination control, and multilevel control. The book covers also topics bridging computer science, communication, and control, like communication for control of networks, average consensus for distributed systems, and modeling and verification of discrete and of hybrid systems. Examples and case studies are introduced in the first part of the text and developed throughout the book. They include: control of underwater vehicles, automated-guided vehicles on a container terminal, control of a printer as a complex machine, and control of an electric power system. The book is composed of short essays each within eight pages, including suggestions and references for further research and reading. By reading the essays collected in the book Coordination Control of Distributed Systems, graduate students and post-docs will be introduced to the research frontiers in control of decentralized and of distributed systems. Control theorists and practitioners with backgrounds in electrical, mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering will find in the book information and inspiration to transfer to their fields of interest the state-of-art in coordination control.

Book Mathematical Methods in Optimization of Differential Systems

Download or read book Mathematical Methods in Optimization of Differential Systems written by Viorel Barbu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a revised and enlarged edition of a book with the same title published in Romanian by the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy in 1989. It grew out of lecture notes for a graduate course given by the author at the University if Ia~i and was initially intended for students and readers primarily interested in applications of optimal control of ordinary differential equations. In this vision the book had to contain an elementary description of the Pontryagin maximum principle and a large number of examples and applications from various fields of science. The evolution of control science in the last decades has shown that its meth ods and tools are drawn from a large spectrum of mathematical results which go beyond the classical theory of ordinary differential equations and real analy ses. Mathematical areas such as functional analysis, topology, partial differential equations and infinite dimensional dynamical systems, geometry, played and will continue to play an increasing role in the development of the control sciences. On the other hand, control problems is a rich source of deep mathematical problems. Any presentation of control theory which for the sake of accessibility ignores these facts is incomplete and unable to attain its goals. This is the reason we considered necessary to widen the initial perspective of the book and to include a rigorous mathematical treatment of optimal control theory of processes governed by ordi nary differential equations and some typical problems from theory of distributed parameter systems.

Book Optimal Control Theory

Download or read book Optimal Control Theory written by Suresh P. Sethi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new 4th edition offers an introduction to optimal control theory and its diverse applications in management science and economics. It introduces students to the concept of the maximum principle in continuous (as well as discrete) time by combining dynamic programming and Kuhn-Tucker theory. While some mathematical background is needed, the emphasis of the book is not on mathematical rigor, but on modeling realistic situations encountered in business and economics. It applies optimal control theory to the functional areas of management including finance, production and marketing, as well as the economics of growth and of natural resources. In addition, it features material on stochastic Nash and Stackelberg differential games and an adverse selection model in the principal-agent framework. Exercises are included in each chapter, while the answers to selected exercises help deepen readers’ understanding of the material covered. Also included are appendices of supplementary material on the solution of differential equations, the calculus of variations and its ties to the maximum principle, and special topics including the Kalman filter, certainty equivalence, singular control, a global saddle point theorem, Sethi-Skiba points, and distributed parameter systems. Optimal control methods are used to determine optimal ways to control a dynamic system. The theoretical work in this field serves as the foundation for the book, in which the author applies it to business management problems developed from his own research and classroom instruction. The new edition has been refined and updated, making it a valuable resource for graduate courses on applied optimal control theory, but also for financial and industrial engineers, economists, and operational researchers interested in applying dynamic optimization in their fields.

Book Stochastic Optimal Control in Infinite Dimension

Download or read book Stochastic Optimal Control in Infinite Dimension written by Giorgio Fabbri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an introduction to stochastic optimal control in infinite dimension, this book gives a complete account of the theory of second-order HJB equations in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, focusing on its applicability to associated stochastic optimal control problems. It features a general introduction to optimal stochastic control, including basic results (e.g. the dynamic programming principle) with proofs, and provides examples of applications. A complete and up-to-date exposition of the existing theory of viscosity solutions and regular solutions of second-order HJB equations in Hilbert spaces is given, together with an extensive survey of other methods, with a full bibliography. In particular, Chapter 6, written by M. Fuhrman and G. Tessitore, surveys the theory of regular solutions of HJB equations arising in infinite-dimensional stochastic control, via BSDEs. The book is of interest to both pure and applied researchers working in the control theory of stochastic PDEs, and in PDEs in infinite dimension. Readers from other fields who want to learn the basic theory will also find it useful. The prerequisites are: standard functional analysis, the theory of semigroups of operators and its use in the study of PDEs, some knowledge of the dynamic programming approach to stochastic optimal control problems in finite dimension, and the basics of stochastic analysis and stochastic equations in infinite-dimensional spaces.
