Download or read book Viscometry for Liquids written by S. V. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for scientists involved in the calibration of viscometers. A detailed description for stepping up procedures to establish the viscosity scale and obtaining sets of master viscometers is given in the book. Uncertainty considerations for standard oils of known viscosity are presented. The modern viscometers based on principles of tuning fork, ultrasonic, PZT, plate waves, Love waves, micro-cantilever and vibration of optical fiber are discussed to inspire the reader to further research and to generate improved versions. The primary standard for viscosity is pure water. Measurements of its viscosity with accuracy/uncertainty achieved are described. The principles of rotational and oscillation viscometers are explained to enhance the knowledge in calibration work. Devices used for specific materials and viscosity in non SI units are discussed with respect to the need to correlate viscosity values obtained by various devices. The description of commercial viscometers meets the needs of the user.

Download or read book Mechanics and Chemistry in Lubrication written by A. Dorinson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-08-01 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is widely recognized that friction, wear and lubrication are linked together in a single interdisciplinary complex of scientific learning and technological practice, fragmented and specialized approaches still predominate. In this book, the authors examine lubrication from an interdisciplinary viewpoint. They demonstrate that once the treatment of lubrication is released from the confines of the fluid film concept, this interdisciplinary approach comes into full play. Tribological behavior in relation to lubrication is then examined from two major points of view: one is mechanical, not only with respect to the properties and behavior of the lubricant but also of the surfaces being lubricated. The other is chemical and encompasses the chemistry of the lubricant, the surfaces and the ambient surroundings. It is in the emphasis on the interaction of the basic mechanical and chemical processes in lubrication that this book differs from conventional treatments.

Download or read book Asphalt Pavements written by Patrick Lavin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt Pavements provides the know-how behind the design, production and maintenance of asphalt pavements and parking lots. Incorporating the latest technology, this book is the first to focus primarily on the design, production and maintenance of low-volume roads and parking areas. Special attention is given to determining the traffic capacity, required thickness and asphalt mixture type for parking applications. Topics covered include: material information such as binder properties, testing grading and selection; construction information such as mixing plant operation, proportioning, mixture placement and compaction; and design information such as thickness and mixture design methods and guidelines on applying these to highways, city streets and parking Areas. It is an essential practical guide aimed at those engineers and architects who are not directly involved in the asphalt industry, but who nonetheless need to have a good general knowledge of the subject. Asphalt Pavements provides a novice with enough information to completely design, construct and specify an asphalt pavement.

Download or read book Structures and Dynamics of Asphaltenes written by Oliver C. Mullins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-01-31 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigative assault upon the enigmatic asphaltenes has recently resulted in sig nificant advances in many varied disciplines. Taken individually, each discipline exposes certain facets of asphaltenes, but each, alone, can never reveal asphaltenes from all van tages. Even seemingly narrowly focused issues such as the molecular structures of asphal tenes, or the colloidal structures of asphaltenes require a confluence of many lines of investigation to yield an understanding which differs from truth by diminishing uncer tainty. An holistic treatment of the asphaltenes is a powerful approach to evolve further their understanding. For example, examination of asphaltenes at the highest resolution yields molecular structure. A slight increase in scale probes asphaltene colloidal structure. Weaving together asphaltene studies performed at different length scales results in a fabric which envelops an encompassing vision of asphaltenes. At the same time, the interfaces of these hierarchical studies provide additional constraints on imagination, more than investi gations at individual length scales alone. These considerations shaped the timing, format, and the content of our book. The editors are very appreciative of the diligence and hard work manifest in each of the contributed chapters herein. We thank the contributing authors for making this project a success. Oliver C. Mullins Eric Y. Sheu vii CONTENTS I. Asphaltenes: Types and Sources ...................................... .

Download or read book Engineering Fluid Mechanics written by William Graebel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-01-19 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics is a core component of many undergraduate engineering courses. It is essential for both students and lecturers to have a comprehensive, highly illustrated textbook, full of exercises, problems and practical applications to guide them through their study and teaching. Engineering Fluid Mechanics By William P. Grabel is that book The ISE version of this comprehensive text is especially priced for the student market and is an essential textbook for undergraduates (particularly those on mechanical and civil engineering courses) designed to emphasis the physical aspects of fluid mechanics and to develop the analytical skills and attitudes of the engineering student. Example problems follow most of the theory to ensure that students easily grasp the calculations, step by step processes outline the procedure used, so as to improve the students' problem solving skills. An Appendix is included to present some of the more general considerations involved in the design process. The author also links fluid mechanics to other core engineering courses an undergraduate must take (heat transfer, thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, statistics and dynamics) wherever possible, to build on previously learned knowledge.
