Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing “The Narrow Path” or “The Road Less Traveled” can often leave us feeling alone regarding our resolve to be Christ’s follower. Most of our world no longer knows what moral standards are or even the definition of what it means to be virtuous. If we are careful about whose compass we follow, we can avoid heading down the wrong path. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, the Holy Bible is the Christians’ compass and offers wisdom as we seek every virtue shining the light of Jesus to a world that desperately needs Him. Though we think of purity and kindness as the definition of virtue, it is much more. Being virtuous is a way of life that focuses our goals on excellence. These goals describe who we are because of our actions, which is what we do, and say. For a Christian, virtue ultimately demonstrates the love of God that beams Christ’s light to a world of suffering and pain. God calls us to work out this perfection to be impactful in our relationships because our lives are a ministry to ALL we touch throughout our daily happenings. If one is to be considered virtuous, their life must reflect a high standard with the primary goal of being excellent. Notice I said the “goal of being excellent.” Excellence does not lead to perfection because no one is, no matter how hard we try. The goal of adopting a standard of living out of biblical principles guides us to look like Jesus. Growing in our relationship with Him is the result. Virtuous people not only know what is right but also live it out. They go the extra mile to be intentional in what they speak, do, and value. They have the purpose with the opportunity to honor God as they reflect His image to the world around us. It’s a noisy, enticing world that pulls us in many directions, rather than closer to God. Being tuned into God through daily conversation allows us to listen to the Holy Spirit. As we ride down life’s trail, the Holy Spirit is here to help us make decisions that are God’s best for us. In Virtues of Horsemen, author Melinda Buckallew Villarreal shares how walking with God is in everything you do, think, and say. By grasping biblical virtues, she demonstrates how you can turn your Christian walk into worship. Through scripture and her personal experiences with both horses and physical limitations, this devotional teaches you how to transform daily repetition, struggles, or pain into lessons. Villarreal communicates that church on Sunday is not enough, and she leaves you wanting more of God in your life. Each devotional includes application questions to stretch you and to encourage your growth with God and your daily walk with the Holy Spirit.

These five spent years contriving the ingenuity, the strategy, the will . . . the guts to go through with the plan, and when all the pieces were in place, they began their incredible journey. Defying odds, facing sorrow-filled trials and tribulations, warring with a mighty enemy, and basking in the glory of victories, Mathias finds a strength of body and soul that can only be provided by God. Through his prayers and sufferings, Mathias brings the restoration of his faith to the people of his nation, separating the righteous from the wicked as he initiates a war to purge the enemy from the country. The war Jackson Mathias More foresaw in a dream came—he waged it.

Book The Four Horsemen

  • ISBN : 0525511954
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book The Four Horsemen written by Christopher Hitchens and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett filmed a landmark discussion about modern atheism. The video went viral. Now in print for the first time, the transcript of their conversation is illuminated by new essays from three of the original participants and an introduction by Stephen Fry. At the dawn of the new atheist movement, the thinkers who became known as “the four horsemen,” the heralds of religion's unraveling—Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett—sat down together over cocktails. What followed was a rigorous, pathbreaking, and enthralling exchange, which has been viewed millions of times since it was first posted on YouTube. This is intellectual inquiry at its best: exhilarating, funny, and unpredictable, sincere and probing, reminding us just how varied and colorful the threads of modern atheism are. Here is the transcript of that conversation, in print for the first time, augmented by material from the living participants: Dawkins, Harris, and Dennett. These new essays, introduced by Stephen Fry, mark the evolution of their thinking and highlight particularly resonant aspects of this epic exchange. Each man contends with the most fundamental questions of human existence while challenging the others to articulate their own stance on God and religion, cultural criticism, spirituality, debate with people of faith, and the components of a truly ethical life. Praise for The Four Horsemen “This bracing exchange of ideas crackles with energy. It’s fascinating to watch four first-class minds explore a rugged intellectual terrain. . . . The text affords a different, more reflective way of processing the truly vital exchange of ideas. . . . I commend the book to those seeking an honest reckoning with their religion—and those curious about how the world looks from a rigorously naturalistic and atheistic point of view.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “The full, electrifying transcript of the one and only conversation between the quartet of luminaries dubbed the ‘four horsemen’ of the New Atheism, which took place in Washington, D.C., in 2007. Among the vast range of ideas and questions they discuss: Is it ever possible to win a war of ideas? Is spirituality the preserve of the religious? And, are there any truths you would rather not know?”—The Bookseller (UK) (starred review)

Book The Art of Living Well

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-05-14
  • ISBN : 1350012858

Download or read book The Art of Living Well written by Paul van Tongeren and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first English translation of the prize-winning Dutch title Leven is Een Kunst, Paul van Tongeren creates a new kind of virtue ethics, one that centres on how to 'live well' in our contemporary world. While virtue ethics is based on the moral philosophy of Aristotle, it has had many interpretations and iterations throughout history and features prominently in the thinking of the Stoics, Christian narratives and the writings of Nietzsche. The Art of Living Well explores and expands upon these traditions, using them as a basis to form a new interpretation; one that foregrounds art and creativity as paramount to the struggle to act in an authentic and moral way. Acting as both a clear introduction to virtue ethics and moral philosophy and a serious work of original philosophy, this book connects philosophy with real lived experience and tackles, head-on, the perennial philosophical question: 'how do we live well?'

Book excerpt: Managing early modern England was difficult because the state was weak. Although Queen Elizabeth was the supreme ruler, she had little bureaucracy, no standing army, and no police force. This meant that her chief manager, Lord Burghley, had to work with the gentlemen of the magisterial classes in order to keep the peace and defend the realm. He did this successfully by employing the shared value systems of the ruling classes, an improved information system, and gentle coercion. Using Burghley's archive, Governing by Virtue explores how he ran a state whose employees were venal, who owned their jobs for life, or whose power derived from birth and possession, not allegiance, even during national crises like that of the Spanish Armada.

Book excerpt: In this study of the relationship between men and their horses in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, Monica Mattfeld explores the experience of horsemanship and how it defined one’s gendered and political positions within society. Men of the period used horses to transform themselves, via the image of the centaur, into something other—something powerful, awe-inspiring, and mythical. Focusing on the manuals, memoirs, satires, images, and ephemera produced by some of the period’s most influential equestrians, Mattfeld examines how the concepts and practices of horse husbandry evolved in relation to social, cultural, and political life. She looks closely at the role of horses in the world of Thomas Hobbes and William Cavendish; the changes in human social behavior and horse handling ushered in by elite riding houses such as Angelo’s Academy and Mr. Carter’s; and the public perception of equestrian endeavors, from performances at places such as Astley’s Amphitheatre to the satire of Henry William Bunbury. Throughout, Mattfeld shows how horses aided the performance of idealized masculinity among communities of riders, in turn influencing how men were perceived in regard to status, reputation, and gender. Drawing on human-animal studies, gender studies, and historical studies, Becoming Centaur offers a new account of masculinity that reaches beyond anthropocentrism to consider the role of animals in shaping man.
