By the Policeman’s omnipresent club? It is a brutal method, costly and irritating. There is a better way, and this is by lending to the moral requirements of the community.”

Hose was a black laborer accused of killing Alfred Cranford, a white farmer, and raping his wife. The national media closely followed the manhunt and Hose’s capture. An armed mob intercepted Hose’s Atlanta-bound train and took the prisoner back to Newnan. There, in front of a large gathering on a Sunday afternoon, Hose was mutilated and set on fire. His body was dismembered and pieces of it were kept by souvenir hunters. Born and raised twenty miles from Newnan, Edwin T. Arnold was troubled and fascinated by the fact that this horrific chain of events had been largely shut out of local public memory. In "What Virtue There Is in Fire," Arnold offers the first in-depth examination of the lynching of Sam Hose. Arnold analyzes newspapers, letters, and speeches to understand reactions to this brutal incident, without trying to resolve the still-disputed facts of the crime. Firsthand accounts were often contradictory, and portrayals of Hose differed starkly--from "black beast" to innocent martyr. Arnold traces how different groups interpreted and co-opted the story for their own purposes through the years. To have moral virtue one must have practical wisdom - the ability to deliberate well and to see what is morally relevant in a given context. Julia Driver challenges this classical theory of virtue, arguing that it fails to take into account virtues which do seem to involve ignorance or epistemic defect. Some 'virtues of ignorance' are counterexamples to accounts of virtue which hold that moral virtue must involve practical wisdom. Modesty, for example, is generally considered to be a virtue even though the modest person may be making an inaccurate assessment of his or her accomplishments. Driver argues that we should abandon the highly intellectualist view of virtue and instead adopt a consequentialist perspective which holds that virtue is simply a character trait which systematically produces good consequences.

In 1619, a year before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the first shipload of twenty Africans arrived at Jamestown, Virginia. For more than two hundred years, these Africans were brought against their will from the coastal countries of West Africa. These forced immigrants were prevented from preserving their history and culture. And this is why so many African Americans, Jamaicans, Haitians, Trinidadians, and all the black people whose ancestors migrated from Africa against their will to the Western world beginning from the fifteenth century do not know their history beyond slavery. The results of this forced migration and lack of knowledge of true history have shown themselves in epidemic levels of individual low self-esteem, lack of trust, team work, group self-confidence, black on black crimes heavy school drop-outs and low graduation rates among the Africans in the Diaspora, to mention a few. The virtues and the greatness of the ancestors, which present in colorful pictures the customs and occupations of the ancestors of the Africans in the Diaspora, and traces their true history to the periods when they were kings, chiefs, and nobles in West Africa, is written to build the self-esteem of their descendants, in the kindergarten, grades one, two, three and four as well as teach and reinforce their social and academic skills. It is written to correct at an early age, the negative information that limits their origin in life to former plantation slaves and make them grow with the beliefs that the stars of greatness are also in their DNA and within their reach, as it is often believed and assumed by the European children in their various classes and schools. The facts contained in the story book are contributions from the interviews granted by some Professors of African, and African American history, Oral and Palace historians from Africa, African elders over one hundred, and from my previous documentary, “From Palace to Plantation to Glory.”
