Book Virtual Reality 1 0 The 90 s

Download or read book Virtual Reality 1 0 The 90 s written by Ben Delaney and published by CyberEdge Information Services. This book was released on 2017 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you ever wonder who built the first head-mounted display? Who first detailed a coherent theory of Cyberspace? Who wrote about cybersex and the challenges it creates? Who worried about addiction to VR? Did anyone ever cure cyber-sickness? From 1991 to 1996, CyberEdge Journal covered these stories and hundreds more. CEJ was read in more than 40 countries by thousands of VR investors, researchers, entrepreneurs, vendors, and aficionados. Appreciated for its "No VR Hype" attitude, CyberEdge Journal was the publication of record for the VR industry in the 90's. Author Ben Delaney was the Publisher and Editor of CyberEdge Journal, and was one of the most respected commentators and presenters in the field, and went on to publish the industry-defining multi-year market study, The Market for Visual Simulation/Virtual Reality Systems until 2004. Now that VR is enjoying a renaissance, it's time to understand where it came from, and avoid making the same mistakes that were made in the first golden age of VR, the 1990's. It's also a good time to remember the excitement and sense of adventure, as well as the people, that characterized those time. Virtual Reality 1.0 describes not just some of the hot topics of VR, but also the origins, issues, and solutions that were chronicled in the pages of CyberEdge Journal. Complemented by over 100 photos and drawings, there is a surprisingly contemporary feel to these old articles. In addition, more than a dozen VR pioneers have contributed new reminiscences of their work in VR. Another treat, the book is introduced by one of the acknowledged leaders of VR research and industry, Dr. Thomas Furness, Founding Director of the world-famous Human Interface Technology Laboratory at the University of Washington. This book is a re-issue of Sex Drugs and Tessellation, with minor edits.

Book Japanese Visual Culture

Download or read book Japanese Visual Culture written by Mark W. MacWilliams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of Japan's cultural encounter with Western entertainment media, manga (comic books or graphic novels) and anime (animated films) are two of the most universally recognized forms of contemporary mass culture. Because they tell stories through visual imagery, they vault over language barriers. Well suited to electronic transmission and distributed by Japan's globalized culture industry, they have become a powerful force in both the mediascape and the marketplace. This volume brings together an international group of scholars from many specialties to probe the richness and subtleties of these deceptively simple cultural forms. The contributors explore the historical, cultural, sociological, and religious dimensions of manga and anime, and examine specific sub-genres, artists, and stylistics. The book also addresses such topics as spirituality, the use of visual culture by Japanese new religious movements, Japanese Goth, nostalgia and Japanese pop, "cute" (kawali) subculture and comics for girls, and more. With illustrations throughout, it is a rich source for all scholars and fans of manga and anime as well as students of contemporary mass culture or Japanese culture and civilization.

  • Author : José Roberto Pellini
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2015-10-05
  • ISBN : 1443883905
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Coming to Senses written by José Roberto Pellini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every culture conceives of the senses in different ways, establishing their own models and sensory hierarchies. Despite the importance of the senses in human experience, archaeology has generally neglected the sensory dimension of the material world. In response to this lacuna, the contributions to this volume incorporate all the senses in imaginative scenarios, in order to stimulate new ways of seeing and conceptualising archaeology and bring back the “self” to this science. The international character of the essays brought together here, including researchers and case studies from across the globe, provides a variety of perspectives on this topic from a number of scales of analysis. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers, including academic researchers and the general public concerned with archaeology, history, anthropology, and sociology, and will provide readers with a greater understanding of the dynamics of the senses, the relationship between narratives and societies, and the cultural world.

Book On line Analytical Processing Systems for Business

Download or read book On line Analytical Processing Systems for Business written by Robert J. Thierauf and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On-line analytical processing (OLAP) is clearly a new approach to information system technology—offering a much-needed way to make informed decisions better and faster. One of its most important characteristics is multidimensional analysis—analysis that goes beyond the conventional two-dimensional analysis and provides users with rapid retrieval of data from organizational databases, data warehouses, or both. Not only that, but most importantly, says Dr. Thierauf, it allows users to look at different dimensions of the same data, thus enabling them to do analyses across departmental and even corporate boundaries. How it works and OLAP's many benefits to aid users in the public and private sectors is spelled out here, comprehensively yet concisely, and with the author's customary well-developed examples and clear prose. His book will be important reading for people at all levels of management and in all types of organizations. Another way of viewing OLAP is getting a typical company out of the custom-report-writing business and into the data-cube-server building business. An OLAP data structure can be thought of as a Rubik's Cube of data that users can twist and twirl in different ways to work through what-if and what-happened scenerios to get at the whys of the situation. Within an OLAP environment, the focus is on performing dictionary definition and maintenance as well as mapping flat files or relational columns to dimensions and measures. Although this may sound like a lot of work, managing one data cube is more efficient than writing a number of custom reports. Currently, some vendors provide administrative tools to get the data into the cubes in the first place, in the proper form, and on a regular basis. Hence, the job of managing data has been simplified for users.
