Book Epidemiological Aspects of Transmission and Control of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection and Associate Diseases

Download or read book Epidemiological Aspects of Transmission and Control of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection and Associate Diseases written by Le Thanh Hien and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents studies conducted to investigate an outbreak of porcine high fever disease (PHFD) in a small area of Vietnam, in terms of mortality, morbidity, spatial transmission between herds, and risk factors for the disease. This is a severe disease with very high mortality in all age groups which has been considered to be caused by highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus strains. The focus of the thesis then shifted; to the investigation of within-herd transmission of PRRS virus (PRRSV) infection in commercial herds typically present in Ontario; to the evaluation of commonly used control strategies; and to the estimation of sensitivity and specificity of the PCR test used in surveillance of PRRSV. During our investigation of a PHFD outbreak, it was found that 33.4% of households were cases, and the mortality in these cases was 24.3%, 22.8%, and 6.7% in sows, suckling-nursery pigs, and finishing pigs, respectively. The spatial spread of the disease in the area was very limited, whereas introduction of pigs into a farm before the outbreak was identified as a risk factor. Moreover, it was also found that raising ducks in proximity to pigs and feeding of water green crop to pigs increased the risk for PHFD. For within-herd dynamics of PRRSV infection, the basic reproductive number (Ro) for PRRSV and duration of detectable maternal antibodies (m) in suckling and nursery pigs was estimated. Ro was found to be high (Ro=9.76 ) and m was short (m=3 weeks). The results of mathematical modeling suggested that it is possible to eliminate PRRSV infection from a herd by using herd closure or mass immunization. However, duration of sow immunity, and efficacy of immunization could play a critical role in this result. Finally, our study found that the sensitivity of tissue PCR is higher than the sensitivity of serum PCR and the likelihood of detecting the virus in tissue was higher in pigs with dyspnea or rough hair coat, but lower in lame pigs. This finding can help to increase the sensitivity of risk-based surveillance programs.

Download or read book Veterinary Vaccines written by R. Pandey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vaccines have historically been considered to be the most cost-effective method for preventing communicable diseases. It was a vaccine that enabled global eradication of the dreaded disease smallpox. Mass immunization of children forms the anchor of the strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO) to attain "health for all" status by the year 2000. Vaccinology is undergoing a dimensional change with the advances that have taken place in immunology and genetic engineering. Vaccines that confer short or inadequate immunity or that have side effects are being replaced by better vaccines. New vaccines are being developed for a variety of maladies. Monoclonal antibodies and T cell clones have been employed to delineate the immunodeterminants on microbes, an approach elegantly complemented by computer graphics and molecular imaging techniques. Possibilities have opened for obtaining hitherto scarce antigens of parasites by the DNA recombinant route. Better appreciation of the idiotypic network has aroused research on anti idiotypic vaccines. Solid-phase synthesis of peptides is leading to an array of synthetic vaccines, an approach that is expected to attain its full potential once the sequences activating suppressor cells are discovered and the rules for presentation of antigens to T and B cells are better worked out. A new breed of vaccines is on the horizon that seeks to control fertility. Originally conceived to intercept a step in the reproductive process, they are conceptual models for developing approaches to regulate the body's internal processes.

Book Emerging and Transboundary Animal Viruses

Download or read book Emerging and Transboundary Animal Viruses written by Yashpal Singh Malik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is the first volume of the book series-Livestock Diseases and Management, summarizes the prominence and implications of the emerging and transboundary animal viruses. Although the livestock plays an important role in the economy of many countries, the emerging and transboundary animal viral diseases possess a serious risk to the animal-agriculture sector and food security globally. The book describes the precise and up-to-date information on animal viral diseases which have emerged in the recent past or are re-emerging due to various environmental factors and those which are not bounded in restricted national boundaries and attained the transboundary status. The chapters summarize the recent advancements in the molecular state-of-art tools towards the development of diagnostics, prophylactics, and therapeutics of these viruses. It also explicitly describes the challenges imposed by the emerging and transboundary viral infections and our preparedness to counter them.

Book Studies in Viral Ecology Volume 1

Download or read book Studies in Viral Ecology Volume 1 written by Christon J. Hurst and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the ecology of viruses by examining their interactive dynamics with their hosting species (in this volume, in microbes and plants), including the types of transmission cycles that viruses have evolved encompassing principal and alternate hosts, vehicles, and vectoring species. Examining virology from an organismal biology approach and focusing on the concept that viral infections represent areas of overlap in the ecologies of the involved species, Viral Ecology is essential for students and professionals who either may be non-virologists or virologists whose previous familiarity has been very specialized.

Book Corona and Related Viruses

Download or read book Corona and Related Viruses written by Gary A. Levy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corona- and related viruses are important human and animal pathogens that also serve as models for other viral-mediated diseases. Interest in these pathogens has grown tremendously since the First International Symposium was held at the Institute of Virology and Immunobiology of the University of Wiirzburg, Germany. The Sixth International Symposium was held in Quebec City from August 27 to September I, 1994, and provided further understanding of the molecular biology, immunology, and pathogenesis of corona-, toro-, and arterivirus infections. Lectures were given on the molecular biology, pathogenesis, immune responses, and development of vaccines. Studies on the pathogenesis of coronavirus infections have been focused mainly on murine coronavirus, and mouse hepatitis virus. Neurotropic strains ofMHV (e.g., JHM, A59) cause a demyelinating disease that has served as an animal model for human multiple sclerosis. Dr. Samuel Dales, of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, gave a state-of-the-art lecture on our current under standing of the pathogenesis of JHM-induced disease.
