Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are

Book The Complete Personal Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book The Complete Personal Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson written by Trenton B. Olsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all of Robert Louis Stevenson’s achievements in fiction, many of his contemporaries thought of him primarily as an essayist. His essays, known for their intellectual substance, emotional force, and stylistic vitality, were widely considered the best of their time. Despite the importance of Stevenson’s nonfiction, his personal essays—70 in total—have never been printed together in a single volume until now. Stevenson’s essays explore a range of topics from illness and evolution to marriage and dreams, and from literal and literary travel to the behavior of children and the character of dogs. Grappling with many of the cultural, ethical, and existential questions of his age, he resists dogma to draw fresh conclusions. Stevenson examines beggars and university students, immigrants and engineers, invalids and nurses, outlining his own colorful life story and unique approach to "the art of living" along the way. Whereas the most common and widely available versions of these texts were modified after Stevenson’s death, this volume gathers his personal essays, many of which have never appeared in any modern edition, in their authorized versions. These essays are still considered classic models of the form, and in this volume, the Editor presents them alongside an introduction and notes to assist in a rereading and reappreciation that is long overdue.

  • Author : Thomas Karshan

Download or read book On Essays written by Thomas Karshan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montaigne called it a ramble; Chesterton the joke of literature; and Hume an ambassador between the worlds of learning and of conversation. But what is an essay, and how did it emerge as a literary form? What are the continuities and contradictions across its history, from Montaigne's 1580 Essais through the familiar intimacies of the Romantic essay, and up to more recent essayists such as Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, and Claudia Rankine? Sometimes called the fourth genre, the essay has been over-shadowed in literary history by fiction, poetry, and drama, and has proved notoriously resistant to definition. On Essays reveals in the essay a pattern of paradox: at once a pedagogical tool and a refusal of the methodical languages of universities and professions; politically engaged but retired and independent; erudite and anti-pedantic; occasional and enduring; intimate and oratorical; allusive and idiosyncratic. Perhaps because it is a form of writing against which literary scholarship has defined itself, there has been surprisingly little work on the tradition of the essay. Neither a comprehensive history nor a student companion, On Essays is a series of seventeen elegantly written essays on authors and aspects in the history of the genre - essays which, taken together, form the most substantial book yet published on the essay in Britain and America.

Book The Philosophy of life and the Contemporary Relevance of R L Stevensons essays

Download or read book The Philosophy of life and the Contemporary Relevance of R L Stevensons essays written by Poorva Bhonde and published by Walnut Publication. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), a Victorian essayist, novelist and poet is an ardent advocate of courage and optimism. His philosophy of life, as reflected in his highly popular essays included in ‘Virginibus Puerisque’, ‘Memories and Portraits’ and ‘Familiar Studies of Men and Books’ acts as a panacea for the evils of Modern Age characterized by materialism and overall pessimism. The study of Victorian English Literature is incomplete without studying Stevensons’s essays. They are highly anthologized all over the world. Hence the present book will be of immense help to the students, academicians and the lovers of literature who wish to appreciate Stevenson’s essays critically with the focus on his philosophy of life.

Book Fantasy Art and Life

Download or read book Fantasy Art and Life written by William Gray and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In part a sequel to his earlier Death and Fantasy, William Gray’s Fantasy, Art and Life: Essays on George MacDonald, Robert Louis Stevenson and Other Fantasy Writers examines the ways in which “Life” in its various senses is affirmed, explored and enhanced through the work of the creative imagination, especially in fantasy literature. The discussion includes a range of fantasy writers, but focuses chiefly on two writers of the Victorian period, George MacDonald and Robert Louis Stevenson, whose Scottish (and particularly Calvinist) backgrounds deeply affected their engagement with what MacDonald called “The Fantastic Imagination.”

Book Knowledge Dissemination in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Knowledge Dissemination in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Marina Dossena and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinctive in its markedly interdisciplinary approach, this book presents studies dealing with literary, cultural and linguistic history both in Europe and in the US, bringing together scholars from different fields, while highlighting features that are shared among their contributions. It offers new insights into phenomena which have generally been under-investigated, such as the role played by popular culture, music, and the arts in the circulation of information, in the construction of popular taste, and even in scientific popularisation on both sides of the Atlantic. As for the choice to focus on the nineteenth century, this is dictated by the fact that, in those decades, for the first time in history, scientific, technological, and social developments accelerated simultaneously. It is, therefore, important to see how such new knowledge was circulated among an ever-growing audience by means of different genres and text types, bearing in mind that divisions between the literary and non-literary were hardly as sharp as they are today. The book presents contributions by Robert-Louis Abrahamson, Nicholas Brownlees, Bruno Cartosio, Sonia Di Loreto, Aileen Dillane, Marina Dossena, Kirsten Lawson, Angela Locatelli, William H. Mulligan, Jr., Stefano Rosso, and Polina Shvanyukova.

Book The Man in the Willows

Download or read book The Man in the Willows written by Matthew Dennison and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his regular days in London, Kenneth Grahame sat behind a mahogany desk as Secretary of the Bank of England; on weekends he retired to the house in the country that he shared with his fanciful wife, Elspeth, and their fragile son, Alistair, and took lengthy walks along the Thames in Berkshire, "tempted by the treasures of hedge and ditch; the rapt surprise of the first lords-and-ladies, the rustle of a field-mouse, the splash of a frog."The result of these pastoral wanderings was his masterful creation of The Wind in the Willows, the enduring classic of children's literature; a cautionary tale for adult readers; a warning of the fragility of the English countryside; and an expression of fear at threatened social changes that, in the aftermath of the World War I, became a reality. Like its remarkable author, the book balances maverick tendencies with conservatism. Kenneth Grahame was an Edwardian pantheist whose work has a timeless appeal, an escapist whose withdrawal from reality took the form of time travel into his own past.
