Book Virginia Colonial Decisions Vol 1

Download or read book Virginia Colonial Decisions Vol 1 written by John Randolph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virginia Colonial Decisions, Vol. 1: The Reports of Decisions of the General Court of Virginia, 1728-1741 These decisions now printed for the first time are not ofiered for their mere usefulness. To a large extent they will serve that purpose, as the fountains feed the streams; but the reason that they should be published and put in the hands of the general reader, and of students and practitioners of the law, is chiefly that they are the mirror of the events of by far the most interesting period of our American life. These are therefore not merely decided cases to be used as dull precedents with which to win causes. That is their minor function. Their chief use here is the picture they give of the colonial period in all its shades and aspects, and that they make the observer see what the more detailed narrative of history fails to tell, of those brooding times of the States. Moreover, the publisher has not been content to reproduce simply a statement of the cases, the argu ments of counsel, and the decisions of the courts, recorded in these manuscripts near one hundred and eighty years ago. Printed by themselves they do not seem to appeal sufficiently to the imagination to be pre sented fully in the light in which they should be viewed. Book excerpt: The Virginia State Constitution examines constitutional amendments, court decisions, attorney general opinions, and legislative deliberations bearing on the development and interpretation of the Virginia Constitution. The book contains a detailed history of the Virginia Constitution, with particular attention to key moments in the state's constitutional development, from the 1776 Constitution through the current 1971 Constitution. The book examines several recent state court decisions of note, including the state supreme court's first interpretation of the provision guaranteeing "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" and various court decisions limiting the power to levy taxes. The book also analyzes recent attorney general opinions with significant implications for legislative appropriations to non-profit groups, along with various other legislative initiatives. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Book Loving V Virginia

Download or read book Loving V Virginia written by Susan Dudley Gold and published by Marshall Cavendish. This book was released on 2008 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact and ramifications of cases argued before the Supreme Court are felt for decades, if not centuries. Only the most important issues of the day and the land make it to the nine justices, and the effects of their decisions reach far beyond the litigants. Under discussion here are five of the most momentous Supreme Court cases ever. They include Marbury v. Madison, Roe v. Wade, Dred Scott, Brown v. Board of Education, and The Pentagon Papers. An absorbing exploration of enormously controversial events, the series details, highlights, and clarifies the complex legal arguments of both sides. Placing the cases within their historical context (though they ultimately emerge as "works in progress"), the authors reveal each decision's relevance both to the past and the present. The result is a fascinating glimpse across the centuries into the workings of the Supreme Court and the American judicial system. Highlights and Features - Fascinating, highly relevant Supreme Court cases - Accessible discussion of complex legal theory - Portrait of the American legal system as a "work in progress" - Primary source materials

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virginia Appeals, Vol. 25: The Earliest Report of All Current Decisions of the Supreme Court of Appeals, January, 1922 This is a motion, the object of which is to recover the value of two dogs, alleged to have been wrongfully, unlaw fully, intentionally and deliberately shot and killed. There was a verdict and judgment in favor of the defendant, and the plaintiff assigns error. It is clear that such an action can be maintained, it being well settled at common law that the possession of a dog vests the owner with such a base or qualified property as that he can maintain a civil action for the unlawful conversion, destruction or injury thereof. Commonwealth V. Maclin, 3 Leigh (30 Va.) 810; Davis V. Commonwealth, 17 Gratt. (48 Va.) 618. By statute in Virginia (code 1919, see. 2324) dogs which have been assessed with a license tax which is not delinquent, are personal property, and may be the subject of larceny as well as of malicious or unlawful trespass.
