This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Forestry Research in the Southern United States Station and given research responsibilities in both pine and hardwood types from Florida through Virginia. Prior to the establishment of these experiment stations, some limited research pertaining to southern forestry had been conduct ed by the u.s. Bureau of Forestry (later the Forest Service) and by some State agencies, but funds for such work were very limited. Some early studies dealing with lumber seasoning and preservatives for railway ties, for example, applied to southern pine species. And other national studies of forest resources and a few local reports on the timber and naval-stores industries provided some general knowledge of southern forest conditions and prob Iems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest-Land Utilization in Nicolas and Webster Counties, West Virginia Large tracts of land having no feasible use except forest production, combined With a relatively dense population dependent on the land resources, present problems of readjustment. It may be necessary to have adjustments in the man-land ratio, as well as adjustments in the methods of forest production and land use, if levels of income are to be acceptable. In order to raise the low level of living in forest areas Where mining and other industries are not developed, Without continuous public subsidies, there are two, or a combination of two, alternatives: (1) to develop forest operations of a type that Will provide full employment for the people; and (2) to fit the people for and to provide alternative employment opportunities in this and other areas in order to relieve the subsistence pressure on land resources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from West Virginia: Its Farms and Forests, Mines and Oil-Wells; With a Glimpse of Its Scenery, a Photograph of Its Population, and an Exhibit of Its Industrial Statistics The oak that graces the mountain-mpe has come from an acorn planted by an errant squirrel. From a seed as small, dropped in a Kanawha Valley mail-bag in equal unconsciousness of hidden germ-life, this volume has grown, little by little. Like the forest oak, its growth has been natural, without pruning or pinching, back, or artistic fashioning of any sort. The only aim has been to make it true to nature and to life, however homely its phase. A single letter with a striking reference to mineral resources, followed by other correspondence, a tour of observation in behalf of the Department of Agriculture, exploration of State archives and national census sche dules, and free conferences with intelligent business men of West Virginia, led to the exhibit made in the United States Report of Agriculture for 1863. Enterprising citizens of other States, attracted by these resources, wished to know more of their character and extent. In answer to such demands, from all sections of the North, the author has been induced to prepare this little volume, as intervals of leisure afforded opportunity. Book Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Classic Reprint written by Hu Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Agriculture has not yet greatly lessened the timber areas of Florida. About one acre in eight has been cleared. In many parts, in the southern half of the State particularly, the forest cover is so thin that the woods afford about a good pasturage as if the trees were not there. In the northern part, where the hardwoods of the Appalachian region overlap on Florida and soil is better, the forests' are generally much heavier. Many of the Florida rivers are ideal as driving streams for logs. The currents are sluggish, and the water usually deep. There are a few bars and no rapids. On small streams the chief obstacle in the way of log driving is frequently trees which grow along the banks and down to the extreme low water mark. These trunks sometimes so nearly close the channels that little space is left for logs to pass through. That difficulty is not often met on the larger rivers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station for the Years 1947 and 1948 In the Southeast (the five coastal states Virginia to Florida, inclusive) as elsewhere, high prices and strong demand continued to charac' terize the market for forest products of all kinds throughout most of the 1947-1948 period. Pulpwood production in 1947 was 12 percent greater than in 1945, reflecting an increase in capacity at new and existing mills. Lumber production increased over 1945 by about 18 percent. Producing saw mills totalled nearly nearly a 60 percent increase over 1942. Forest industry expansion continued, one indication being an increasing demand for resource information as obtained by the Forest Survey. The Station now handles several hundred Special requests per year. Though some price adjustment and a more exacting.market were clearly indicated at the close of 1948, the probable demand for wood over the next decade or so. Book Sound Wormy

Download or read book Sound Wormy written by Andrew Gennett and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in what remains some of the wildest country in the United States, Sound Wormy recalls a time when regulations were few and resources were abundant for the southern lumber industry. In 1901 Andrew Gennett put all of his money into a tract of timber along the Chattooga River watershed, which traverses parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. By the time he wrote his memoir almost forty years later, Gennett had outwitted and outworked countless competitors in the southern mountains to make his mark as one of the region's most seasoned, innovative, and successful lumbermen. His recollections of a rough-and-ready outdoors life are filled with details of logging, from the first "cruise" of a timber stand to the moment when the last board lies "on sticks" in the mill yard. He tells how massive poplars, oaks, and other hardwoods had to be felled and trimmed by hand, dragged down mountain slopes by draft animals, floated downstream or carried by rail to the mill, and then sawn, graded, and stacked for drying. He tells of buying timber rights in a land market filled with "sharp" operators, where titles and surveys were often contested and kinship and custom were on an equal footing with the law. Gennett saw more than potential "boardfeet" when he looked at a tree. He recalls, for instance, his efforts to convince the U.S. Forest Service to purchase undisturbed areas of wilderness at a time when its mandate was to condemn and buy up farmed-out and clear-cut land. One such sale initiated by Gennett would become the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness in North Carolina. Filled with logging lore and portraits of the southern mountains and their people, Sound Wormy adds an absorbing new chapter to the region's natural and environmental history.

Book Historians of Economics and Economic Thought

Download or read book Gender and Forests written by Carol J. Pierce Colfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening book brings together the work of gender and forestry specialists from various backgrounds and fields of research and action to analyse global gender conditions as related to forests. Using a variety of methods and approaches, they build on a spectrum of theoretical perspectives to bring depth and breadth to the relevant issues and address timely and under-studied themes. Focusing particularly on tropical forests, the book presents both local case studies and global comparative studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as the US and Europe. The studies range from personal histories of elderly American women’s attitudes toward conservation, to a combined qualitative / quantitative international comparative study on REDD+, to a longitudinal examination of oil palm and gender roles over time in Kalimantan. Issues are examined across scales, from the household to the nation state and the global arena; and reach back to the past to inform present and future considerations. The collection will be of relevance to academics, researchers, policy makers and advocates with different levels of familiarity with gender issues in the field of forestry.

Book Economics of Forest Resources

Download or read book Economics of Forest Resources written by Gregory S. Amacher and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and technical survey of forest resource economics, concentrating on developments in the last twenty years regarding policy instrument choice and uncertainty. The field of forest economics has expanded rapidly in the last two decades, and yet there exists no up-to-date textbook for advanced undergraduate-graduate level use or rigorous reference work for professionals. Economics of Forest Resources fills these gaps, offering a comprehensive technical survey of the field with special attention to recent developments regarding policy instrument choice and uncertainty. It covers all areas in which mathematical models have been used to explain forest owner and user incentives and government behavior, introducing the reader to the rigor needed to think through the consequences of policy instruments. Technically difficult concepts are presented with a unified and progressive approach; an appendix outlines the basic concepts from calculus needed to understand the models and results developed. The book first presents the historical and classic models that every student or researcher in forest economics must know, including Faustman and Hartman approaches, public goods, spatial interdependence, two period life-cycle models, and overlapping generations problems. It then discusses topics including policy instrument choice, deforestation, biodiversity conservation, and age-class based forest modeling. Finally, it surveys such advanced topics as uncertainty in two period models, catastrophic risk, stochastic control problems, deterministic optimal control, and stochastic and deterministic dynamic programming approaches. Boxes with empirical content illustrating applications of the theoretical material appear throughout. Each chapter is self-contained, allowing the reader, student, or instructor to use the text according to individual needs.

Book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options

Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options written by James M. Vose and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.
