Book Virginia Before and During the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Virginia Before and During the War Classic Reprint written by H. H. Farmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virginia Before and During the War In the winter of 1889 I commenced writing the little work now published, to amuse me in my leisure time, with no thought of publishing. As I progressed, I came to the conclusion that those who might read might, from its perusal, form a truer estimate of the state of society and of opinions in the South and especially in Virginia, than usually prevails. In treating the history of the times, and of the character of the actors therein, I have endeavored to be fair and true. Above all things, historic veracity should be observed. Whilst it is right that we should respect the memory of great men who have gone before us, we ought not, in admiration for their success or brilliant achievements, make a false estimate of their characters. Whatever estimate we may form of the justifiableness of our civil war, and of the characters of the prominent actors therein, all must recognize the fact that it settled forever some great questions, and that secession of states can never take place again. We are united for good or for evil, probably for ages; and, if we are ever divided, the dividing line will not run as in 1861. Believing, as I do, that neither side was justifiable in its course during and preceding the war, I do not think we should hold up the prominent actors as models to be imitated by the young, but as examples of men carried away by the violence of party spirit into error. Doubtless the great body of those engaged in the war thought they were doing right; but all history teaches that the sincerity o men cannot be taken as proof that their actions are good. If my views are not absolutely correct, it will do good for the young who are now being taught that the war against secession was exceedingly righteous, and the great civilians and Generals on the Union side - the greatest and best of men - to learn that there is another side to this question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dorothy South: A Love Story of Virginia Just Before the War It was a perfect day of the kind that Mr. Lowell has celebrated in song - "a day in June." It was, moreover, a day glorified even beyond Mr. Lowell's imagining, by the incomparable climate of south side Virginia. A young man of perhaps seven and twenty, came walking with vigor down the narrow roadway, swinging a stick which he had paused by the wayside to cut. The road ran at this point through a luxuriantly growing woodland, with borders of tangled undergrowth and flowers on either side, and with an orchestra of bird performers all around. The road was a public highway, though it would never have been taken for such in any part of the world except in a south side county of Virginia in the late fifties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign in Virginia: May and June, 1864 I have been in this case an editor rather than author. I have frequently had reason to express my obligations to British publishers; to them I must now add their American colleagues in the service of knowledge. Wisdom is justified of her children, and the worship of Minerva is incompatible with base jealousies and narrow-minded self-conceit. But the career. Of Politics is a very different kind of service, and as in regard to the Wars of 1866 and 1870 - 1 in Europe, so in regard to the Civil War in America, 1861 - 1865, not one prophecy, not one scheme, not one criticism of party politicians - American, British, or French - was justified by events. But hard-working and well informed literary men and responsible soldiers were right in all three cases, both as to prognostication before the combatants opened fire and as to the methods on which success depended during the war. Book The Free School Idea in Virginia Before the Civil War

Download or read book The Free School Idea in Virginia Before the Civil War written by William Arthur Maddox and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free School Idea in Virginia Before the Civil War: A Phase of Political and Social Evolution This study is an attempt to assemble and interpret new documentary evidence upon the evolution of the common free school in Virginia. A preliminary survey of the field, "Elementary Education in Virginia during the Early Nineteenth Century," was submitted to a seminar in the History of American Education at Teachers College in 1911. That investigation represented an effort to organize the facts of local history as a basis for a course in the History of Modern Education for Virginia normal schools, training classes, and study circles of teachers in service. The investigation has been continued with the belief that the story of the state's educational transition from colony to commonwealth has never been told; that fragmentary bits of evidence have, in the main, suffered misinterpretation from sentimentalist and ill-informed critic alike. Virginia should not be condemned because it was not like the industrial states; nor should its apologists cite the glory of the University and gloss over the very significant struggle for popular education that characterized the Old Dominion during the first decades of the nineteenth century. Virginia before the War did not succeed in creating a centralized state system, supported by compulsory public taxation, but it would be equally wrong to say that it was a laggard among the states. One should approach this period with the assumption that ante-bellum Virginia evolved the foundations, at least, of a common free school system and moved, perhaps, as rapidly to a democratization of its institutions as did any of the agricultural sections of the American states. My acknowledgment is due Professor Paul Monroe for his investigations and for those standards of scholarship which have been conscious goals in the progress of this work. To Professor William H. Kilpatrick, I am especially indebted for three readings of the manuscript, many conferences, and numerous fruitful suggestions of new lines of research. It was bestowed upon the Country by Elizabeth, greatest of English queens. The United States of America are mere words of description. They are not a name. The rightful and historic name of this great Republic is "Virginia." We must get back to it, if the Country's name is to have any real significance. II. Virginia was the First colony of Great Britain, and her successful settlement furnished the inspiration to English colonization everywhere. For it was the wise Lord Bacon who said that, "As in the arts and sciences the 'first invention' is of more consequence than all the improvements afterwards, so in kingdoms or plantations, the first foundation or plantation is of more dignity than all that followeth." III. On May 13, 1607, the pioneers brought over by the Sarah Constant, the Good Speed, and the Discovery arrived at Jamestown on James River, and Founded the Republic of the United States based on English conceptions of Justice and Liberty. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War History of the Old First Virginia Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia The following sketch of the career of the Old First, during the war, is derived from a diary and the personal recollections of the writer; use also is made of written statements of some of his comrades. The writer knows full well that he cannot do jus tice to the laurels won by the Old First, but he hopes that this will be the means of inciting some one more able than he to write and publish the record of events partly herein described. It was the writer's peculiar good luck to have been able to verify in person all the scenes he describes; he participated in all the battles and marches of the regiment, from its muster into service of'the State, April, 1861, to the battle of Five Forks, April, 1865, where he was taken prisoner. These lines are intended to perpetuate the part which the Old First Virginia infantry took in the war, and they are dedicated to the memory of his lamented friend and comrade, Major George Fisher Norton. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loyal West Virginia: From 1861 to 1865; With an Introductory Chapter on the Status of Virginia for Thirty Years Prior to the War The last chapters of the great Civil War are now being recorded. Those who participated in the struggle, those who saw it, are fast pass ing away, and what is now obtainable from eye-witnesses must soon become tradition. From this point of view any facts relating to the war are valuable, and he who helps to preserve them has, in a measure. Done a duty to his fellow man. This work has been written in deference to the Author' s convictions that a great neglect exists at this time, and has existed for many years, in relation to the history of the part taken in the late war by the loyal West Virginians, both civil and military, who stood so firmly for the preservation of the Union. It was largely with this incentive to guide him that the following pages were written, though indeed, without a full appreciation of the great labor necessary to gather from authentic sources the facts which have been here collected. By no means the least difficult task has been to digest the large amount of material at hand. Indeed, the work has assumed greater preportions than at first intended, largely due to the incorporation of extracts from official reports for the verification of state ments which would otherwise stand entirely upon individual assertion. The Author's personal reminiscences are largely taken from notes kept during his term of over three years' service in the field and, having been made at the time the acts occurred. Their accuracy has not been impaired by time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Military View of Recent Campaigns in Virginia and Maryland For this purpose, research has been made into numerous periodicals of France, England, Germany, and America, for the accounts given by eye-witnesses of the different operations here treated of. The Author has endeavoured to eliminate from these with care the colouring given by the passion of the day, or by extravagance of writing; so as to produce some thing as nearly approaching to a reliable history as the means afford. Such sources must necessarily abound in errors, but these he hopes will be here found corrected: for he has been favoured with numerous private communications from persons who have been spectators of portions of the war, or have had relatives actively engaged in it. He has also, by the kindness of some of them, had access to valuable correspondence bearing on its leading features down to the end of 1862.
