Book excerpt: Third installment in the loosely connected "Virgin" series. All novels standalone but reading them in order - VIRGIN ENCOUNTER followed by VIRGIN ESCAPADE - does enrich the romantic experience. A 19th century Gilded Age romance Vowing to remain a virgin in the interests of her ambitions, Phoebe Hall wants nothing to do with illicit passion or its tragic consequences. Her oath does not, however, protect her from Shield, a tough man who is every bit as driven to get ahead as Phoebe. Some might even call him ruthless in his quest to succeed. But Shield has a chink in his armor, and it's Phoebe. When she does him wrong, her attempt to make him restitution as his mistress brings out the dominant male in him. Driven by desires almost as dark as those belonging to Phoebe, he will do anything to protect her. From her own impulses. And from his, as well.

Book Enchantment

Download or read book Enchantment written by Guy Kawasaki and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enchantment, as defined by bestselling business guru Guy Kawasaki, is not about manipulating people. It transforms situations and relationships. It converts hostility into civility and civility into affinity. It changes skeptics and cynics into believers and the undecided into the loyal. Enchantment can happen during a retail transaction, a high-level corporate negotiation, or a Facebook update. And when done right, it’s more powerful than traditional persuasion, influence, or marketing techniques. Kawasaki argues that in business and personal interactions, your goal is not merely to get what you want but to bring about a voluntary, enduring, and delightful change in other people. By enlisting their own goals and desires, by being likable and trustworthy, and by framing a cause that others can embrace, you can change hearts, minds, and actions.

Book The Enchantments of Mammon

Download or read book The Enchantments of Mammon written by Eugene McCarraher and published by Belknap Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extraordinary work of intellectual history as well as a scholarly tour de force, a bracing polemic, and a work of Christian prophecy...McCarraher challenges more than 200 years of post-Enlightenment assumptions about the way we live and work.” —The Observer At least since Max Weber, capitalism has been understood as part of the “disenchantment” of the world, stripping material objects and social relations of their mystery and magic. In this magisterial work, Eugene McCarraher challenges this conventional view. Capitalism, he argues, is full of sacrament, whether one is prepared to acknowledge it or not. First flowering in the fields and factories of England and brought to America by Puritans and evangelicals, whose doctrine made ample room for industry and profit, capitalism has become so thoroughly enmeshed in the fabric of our society that our faith in “the market” has become sacrosanct. Informed by cultural history and theology as well as management theory, The Enchantments of Mammon looks to nineteenth-century Romantics, whose vision of labor combined reason, creativity, and mutual aid, for salvation. In this impassioned challenge to some of our most firmly held assumptions, McCarraher argues that capitalism has hijacked our intrinsic longing for divinity—and urges us to break its hold on our souls. “A majestic achievement...It is a work of great moral and spiritual intelligence, and one that invites contemplation about things we can’t afford not to care about deeply.” —Commonweal “More brilliant, more capacious, and more entertaining, page by page, than his most ardent fans dared hope. The magnitude of his accomplishment—an account of American capitalism as a religion...will stun even skeptical readers.” —Christian Century

Book The Enchantments of Technology

Download or read book The Enchantments of Technology written by Lee Bailey and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Enchantments of Technology, Lee Worth Bailey erases the conventional distinction between myth and machine in order to explore the passionate foundations concealed in technological culture and address its complex ethical, moral and social implications. Bailey argues that technological society does not simply disenchant the world with its reductive methods and mechanical metaphors, then shape machines with political motives, but is also borne by a deeper, subversive undertow of enchantment. Addressing examples to explore the complexities of these enchantments, his thought is full of illuminating examinations of seductively engaging technologies ranging from the old camera obscura to new automobiles, robots, airplanes, and spaceships. This volume builds on the work of numerous scholars, including Jacques Ellul and Jean Brun on the phenomenological and spiritual aspects of technology, Carl Jung on the archetypal collective unconscious approach to myth, and Martin Heidegger on Being itself. Bailey creates a dynamic, interdisciplinary, postmodern examination of how our machines and their environments embody not only reason, but also desires.

  • Author : Euan Cameron

Download or read book Enchanted Europe written by Euan Cameron and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of history people have used charms and spells to try to control their environment, and forms of divination to try to foresee the otherwise unpredictable chances of life. Many of these techniques were called 'superstitious' by educated elites. For centuries religious believers used 'superstition' as a term of abuse to denounce another religion that they thought inferior, or to criticize their fellow-believers for practising their faith 'wrongly'. From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, scholars argued over what 'superstition' was, how to identify it, and how to persuade people to avoid it. Learned believers in demons and witchcraft, in their treatises and sermons, tried to make 'rational' sense of popular superstitions by blaming them on the deceptive tricks of seductive demons. Every major movement in Christian thought, from rival schools of medieval theology through to the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment, added new twists to the debates over superstition. Protestants saw Catholics as superstitious, and vice versa. Enlightened philosophers mocked traditional cults as superstitions. Eventually, the learned lost their worry about popular belief, and turned instead to chronicling and preserving 'superstitious' customs as folklore and ethnic heritage. Enchanted Europe is the first comprehensive, integrated account of western Europe's long, complex dialogue with its own folklore and popular beliefs. Drawing on many little-known and rarely used texts, Euan Cameron constructs a compelling narrative of the rise, diversification, and decline of popular 'superstition' in the European mind.

Book excerpt: Explores the theme that women are objectified as sexual and reproductive bodies by symbolic beheading in myths and by such practices as veiling, head coverings, and cosmetic highlighting. Shows how women's heads link them to speech, identity, and mind, all characteristics classically reserved for men, and how beheading women reduces them to mute and anonymous flesh. Most of the examples are drawn from Oriental, classical Greek and Roman, and early Christian contexts, but some modern cases are also examined. The seven essays were presented at a panel of the American Academy of Religion, date and place not noted. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Medieval England during The Anarchy... After condemning her for practicing black magic, the superstitious folk in her village banish Melle to a lonely existence in the woodlands. But Melle is no witch! Rather she's the daughter of a learned alchemist and a gifted swordsmith in her own right, an occupation she keeps secret lest she become a political pawn in a battle of power between two evil rulers: the usurper General Raghiln on her side of the River Noir, and Lord Cahan, the overlord of Castle Weild, on the other. Melle's secret is threatened when cruel Lord Cahan abducts her, a brazen capture that sets into motion a shift in military might...and in them. For not only is the innocent virgin not what she seems, neither is her brutish captor. And so begins a war of wills between the real overlord of the land and a pretend witch who must choose sides...between two stubborn lovers hiding too many secrets...between a quelled dominant male and a wildly shameless submissive female...between a woman who gives her trust gladly and a man unwilling to trust even himself...between a staid royal who would rather believe in witchcraft than believe in love and an exuberant peasant literally bound to convince him otherwise.
