Download or read book Veiled Visions written by David Fort Godshalk and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1906 Atlanta, after a summer of inflammatory headlines and accusations of black-on-white sexual assaults, armed white mobs attacked African Americans, resulting in at least twenty-five black fatalities. Atlanta's black residents fought back and repeatedly defended their neighborhoods from white raids. Placing this four-day riot in a broader narrative of twentieth-century race relations in Atlanta, in the South, and in the United States, David Fort Godshalk examines the riot's origins and how memories of this cataclysmic event shaped black and white social and political life for decades to come. Nationally, the riot radicalized many civil rights leaders, encouraging W. E. B. Du Bois's confrontationist stance and diminishing the accommodationist voice of Booker T. Washington. In Atlanta, fears of continued disorder prompted white civic leaders to seek dialogue with black elites, establishing a rare biracial tradition that convinced mainstream northern whites that racial reconciliation was possible in the South without national intervention. Paired with black fears of renewed violence, however, this interracial cooperation exacerbated black social divisions and repeatedly undermined black social justice movements, leaving the city among the most segregated and socially stratified in the nation. Analyzing the interwoven struggles of men and women, blacks and whites, social outcasts and national powerbrokers, Godshalk illuminates the possibilities and limits of racial understanding and social change in twentieth-century America.

Book excerpt: When does becoming part of the team go too far? For decades, young men and women endured degrading and dangerous rituals in order to join sororities and fraternities while college administrators blindly accepted their consequences. In recent years, these practices have spilled over into the mainstream, polluting military organizations, sports teams, and even secondary schools. In Destroying Young Lives: Hazing in Schools and the Military, Hank Nuwer assembles an extraordinary cast of analysts to catalog the evolution of this dangerous practice, from the first hazing death at Cornell University in 1863 to present day tragedies. This hard-hitting compilation addresses the numerous, significant, and often overlooked impacts of hazing, including including sexual exploitation, mental distress, depression, and even suicide. Destroying Young Lives is a compelling look at how universities, the military, and other social groups can learn from past mistakes and protect their members going forward.

Book Elena Ferrante as World Literature

Download or read book Elena Ferrante as World Literature written by Stiliana Milkova Rousseva and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A model of academic praxis." - Public Books Elena Ferrante as World Literature is the first English-language monograph on Italian writer Elena Ferrante, whose four Neapolitan Novels (2011-2014) became a global phenomenon. The book proposes that Ferrante constructs a theory of feminine experience which serves as the scaffolding for her own literary practice. Drawing on the writer's entire textual corpus to date, Stiliana Milkova examines the linguistic, psychical, and corporeal-spatial realities that constitute the female subjects Ferrante has theorized. At stake in Ferrante's theory/practice is the articulation of a feminine subjectivity that emerges from the structures of patriarchal oppression and that resists, bypasses, or subverts these very structures. Milkova's inquiry proceeds from Ferrante's theory of frantumaglia and smarginatura to explore mechanisms for controlling and containing the female body and mind, forms of female authorship and creativity, and corporeal negotiations of urban topography and patriarchal space. Elena Ferrante as World Literature sets forth an interdisciplinary framework for understanding Ferrante's texts and offers an account of her literary and cultural significance today.

Book Political Uncertainty Violence and Hope in Uganda

Download or read book Political Uncertainty Violence and Hope in Uganda written by Charles Kisembo and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Uncertainty, Violence and Hope in Uganda: A Personal Account demonstrates both the tumultuous and hopeful aspects of Uganda’s political history. Much as the first 20 years of Uganda’s independence saw politics of experimentation, intrigue, and lack of ethics, sliding the country into a journey of uncertainty and violence, the latter years saw hope and economic progress. The book first introduces the author, both as a civilian and a soldier. Chapter 2 examines Milton Obote’s social, economic, and military policies, and how they catapulted Idi Amin to power in 1971. Chapter 3 crystallizes Uganda’s political uncertainty and violence, which saw over 300,000 Ugandans murdered under Amin. Subsequent chapters describe the armed national efforts to depose Amin and Obote from power. These culminated in Museveni’s takeover from the Okello Junta in 1986. The Museveni takeover triggered a series of political oppositions and insurgencies that spanned almost 20 years. The NRA/NRM has since neutralized and defeated those insurgencies, ushering in unprecedented peace and hope that have seen Uganda recover from economic quagmire and political turmoil to a developing country. Uganda is now bracing for middle-income status, which ushers in the book’s last chapter: Is There Hope for Uganda?
