Book Criteria for Polymer Concrete on Airport Pavements

Download or read book Criteria for Polymer Concrete on Airport Pavements written by Krish Pandalai and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of polymer concrete (PC) has generated a lot of interest among researchers during the past decade. This is due to the many advantages that polymer concrete pavement offers compared to regular portland cement concrete. The advantages of polymer concrete, when compared to portland cement concrete include, quick curing and setting, reduced moisture sensitivity and permeability and improved mechanical properties resulting in reduced pavement thickness to support the same load. These advantages will lead to attractive life cycle cost benefits. Material properties and mix designs for PC with epoxy, methylmethacrylate (MMA) and Polyester as the binder material have been investigated and presented in part I of this report. Part II contains pavement thickness design charts, developed for various aircraft, quality control methods, construction procedures and cost analysis. It has been shown in this study that increased material cost of PC can be offset by the reduced thickness of the pavement. In order to develop life cycle cost information, it is necessary to obtain field performance data of PC pavement, especially in the composite design mode. Keywords: Compressive stress, Modulus of elasticity. (kr).

Book The Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings

Download or read book The Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings written by Kathleen Dardes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium organized by the Getty Conservation Institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum. The first conference of its kind in twenty years, the symposium assembled an international group of conservators of painted panels, and gave them the opportunity to discuss their philosophies and share their work methods. Illustrated in color throughout, this volume presents thirty-one papers grouped into four topic areas: Wood Science and Technology, History of Panel-Manufacturing Techniques, History of the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings, and Current Approaches to the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings.

Book Natural Fiber Reinforced Vinyl Ester and Vinyl Polymer Composites

Download or read book Natural Fiber Reinforced Vinyl Ester and Vinyl Polymer Composites written by S. M. Sapuan and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Fiber Reinforced Vinyl Ester and Vinyl Polymer Composites: Characterization, Properties and Applications discusses recent advances on the development, characterization and application of natural fiber vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites. Various types of vinyl ester and vinyl based polymers, such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), low and high density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) are discussed. Chapters focus on different composite fabrication processes, such as compression moulding, hand lay-up, and pultrusion processes. Key themes covered include the properties and characterization of vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites reinforced by natural fibers. The effect of fiber treatment and coupling agents on mechanical and physical properties of these materials is also evaluated. In addition to a determination of physical and mechanical properties, studies on thermal, degradation, swelling behavior, and the morphological properties of natural fiber reinforced vinyl ester and vinyl polymer composites is also presented. - Presents the importance of vinyl ester and vinyl-based polymers as matrices in natural fiber composites - Provides a detailed and comprehensive review on the development, characterization and applications of natural fiber vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites - Looks at recent fabrication techniques and the mechanical properties of materials - Contains contributions from leading experts in the field

Book Nature Based Solutions for Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Nature Based Solutions for Wastewater Treatment written by Katharine Cross and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 2.4 billion people without improved sanitation and another 2.1 billion with inadequate sanitation (i.e. wastewater drains directly into surface waters), and despite improvements over the past decades, the unsafe management of fecal waste and wastewater continues to present a major risk to public health and the environment (UN, 2016). There is growing interest in low cost sanitation solutions which harness natural systems. However, it can be difficult for wastewater utility managers to understand under what conditions such nature-based solutions (NBS) might be applicable and how best to combine traditional infrastructure, for example an activated sludge treatment plant, with an NBS such as treatment wetlands. There is increasing scientific evidence that treatment systems with designs inspired by nature are highly efficient treatment technologies. The cost-effective design and implementation of ecosystems in wastewater treatment is something that exists and has the potential to be further promoted globally as both a sustainable and practical solution. This book serves as a compilation of technical references, case examples and guidance for applying nature-based solutions for treatment of domestic wastewater, and enables a wide variety of stakeholders to understand the design parameters, removal efficiencies, costs, co-benefits for both people and nature and trade-offs for consideration in their local context. Examples through case studies are from across the globe and provide practical insights into the variety of potentially applicable solutions.

Book Wood Modification Technologies

Download or read book Wood Modification Technologies written by Dick Sandberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market for durable products using modified wood has increased substantially during the last few years. This is partly because of the restriction on the use of toxic preservatives due to environmental concerns, and to lower maintenance cost and time. Furthermore, as sustainability becomes a greater concern, the environmental impact of construction and interior materials is factored in planning by considering the whole life cycle and embodied energy of the materials used. Wood is modified to improve its intrinsic properties, enhance the range of applications of timber, and to acquire the form and functionality desired by engineers without calling the environmental friendliness into question. Wood modification processes are at various stages of development, and the challenges faced in scaling up to industrial applications differ. The aim of this book is to put together the key elements of the changes of wood constituents and the related changes in wood properties of modified wood. Further, a selection of the principal technologies implemented in wood modification are presented. This work is intended for researchers, professionals of timber construction, as well as students studying the science of materials, civil engineering and architecture. This work is not exhaustive, but intends to deliver an outline of the scientific disciplines necessary to apprehend the technologies of wood modification and its behavior during treatment, as well as during its use.
