  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Birdhousing written by Peri Wolfman and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 1993 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While driving through New England one spring, Peri Wolfman and Charles Gold passed a field filled with birdhouses for sale. Charmed, they stopped to buy one and ended up taking the lot. Birdhouses, old and new, craft and architectural, became their favorite thing to search for. In Birdhousing, Peri and Charley share their delight in this new American collectible. Their interest is partly the desire to have birds singing in the garden and partly the enchantment of seeing a little weathered church rise from a thicket of roses. They have also discovered the pleasures of using collections of birdhouses to bring touches of rustic simplicity indoors. In their travels, they have found birdhouses inside and out in New Mexico, in Oregon, in California and Connecticut. Along the way they met the folk artists who make today's birdhouses, some of whom we meet in these pages. Peri and Charley have included recipes for bird feeds and a resource section listing retail and mail-order sources for birdhousing as well seed, feeders, and garden ornaments.. And they've made a beautifully photographed book that's certain to appeal to bird lovers and antiquers alike, as well to anyone willing to indulge in the dream of owning lots of houses -- in miniature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced in association with the National Audubon Society, Audubon Birdhouse Book explains how to build and place safe, species-appropriate bird homes for more than 20 classic North American species, from wrens to raptors. A visit to almost any home or garden center presents birders with numerous cute and colorful contraptions that are sold as bird homes. But the fact is, many of these products provide anything but a safe refuge for your feathered friends. Each of the easy-to-build boxes and shelves within is accompanied by cut lists, specially created line diagrams, and step-by-step photography, making the projects accessible to those with even the most rudimentary woodworking skills. In addition, this practical and beautifully presented guide is packed with color photography and profiles and range maps for the bird species covered—including titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, phoebes, swallows, waterfowl, and even kestrels and owls—to help the reader properly place and maintain the homes to attract birds. And because these projects are the product of years of experience and field-testing, you can be sure you’re getting the best advice regarding proper design, safe construction materials, and correct home placement to mitigate exposure to elements, pests, and predators. Finally, beyond the birdhouses, you’ll find out how you can contribute to the larger birding community and even enhance your birding experience with the aid of new technologies. Build an Audubon-approved home for these species: Bewick’s, Carolina, or House Wren; Prothonotary Warbler; Eastern, Western, or Mountain Bluebird; Ash-throated or Great Crested Flycatcher; Tree Swallow or Violet-green Swallow; Juniper, Oak, Black-crested, or Tufted Titmouse; Barred Owl; Eastern or Western Screech-owl; Barn Owl; Northern Flicker; American Kestrel; Black-capped, Carolina, or Mountain Chickadee; Wood Duck; Hooded Merganser; Purple Martin; Mourning Dove; Barn Swallow; American Robin; House Finch; and Eastern or Say’s Phoebe.

Book Bird Houses Boys Can Build Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bird Houses Boys Can Build Classic Reprint written by Albert Frederick Siepert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Houses Boys Can Build K Years ago a country boy heard or read that if a simple Wax having a hole of a certain size were set upon a post in March or early April it would not be long before bluebirds g would be around to see if the place would do as a summer cot tage. So he took an old paint keg such as white lead is sold at in, nailed a cover across the top, cut an opening in the side and Ethen placed it on a post ten or twelve feet high. Only a day or two passed before a soft call-note was heard, a ash of blue, and the songster had arrived. His mate came a few days later and the paint keg with its tenants became the center of interest in my life. A second brood was reared in midsummer and when the cool days of September came a fine ock left for the South. Each year the house was occupied until the post decayed and the paint keg fell down, but in memory the sad call-note is still heard when spring comes, for it is house hunting time once more, and the bluebirds are looking for the home they had known. That boys elsewhere may know the joy of the companion ship of birds, this little book is written. Birds will come and live near the houses of men whenever food and water are to be had, safety from enemies is given, and when homes are built for them to replace the shelters nature offered before men came with their cultivated fields and crowded cities. The following pages give pictures and drawings of houses that boys have built and in which birds have lived. These houses are planned for the species of birds that have become accustomed to civilization so that they will inhabit the houses put up for them. The author is indebted to Professor Chas. A. Bennett of Bradley Institute and Mr. L. L. Simpson of The Manual Arts Press for helpful suggestions and encouragement; to John Friese for making the drawings; and to the following for the use of the originals of the illustrations which tell most of the story. Edward G. Anderson, Seattle, Wash. Figs. 32, 33, 34, 36, 39, 54, 55, 56, 57. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
