Book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Download or read book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings written by Maya Angelou and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide. Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”—James Baldwin From the Paperback edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this award-winning novel, Tharoor has masterfully recast the two-thousand-year-old epic, The Mahabharata, with fictional but highly recognizable events and characters from twentieth-century Indian politics. Nothing is sacred in this deliciously irreverent, witty, and deeply intelligent retelling of modern Indian history and the ancient Indian epic The Mahabharata. Alternately outrageous and instructive, hilarious and moving, it is a dazzling tapestry of prose and verse that satirically, but also poignantly, chronicles the struggle for Indian freedom and independence.

Book Parisian Lives

Download or read book Parisian Lives written by Deirdre Bair and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year National Book Award-winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her fifteen remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art. In 1971 Deirdre Bair was a journalist and recently minted Ph.D. who managed to secure access to Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett. He agreed that she could be his biographer despite her never having written—or even read—a biography before. The next seven years comprised of intimate conversations, intercontinental research, and peculiar cat-and-mouse games. Battling an elusive Beckett and a string of jealous, misogynistic male writers, Bair persevered. She wrote Samuel Beckett: A Biography, which went on to win the National Book Award and propel Deirdre to her next subject: Simone de Beauvoir. The catch? De Beauvoir and Beckett despised each other—and lived essentially on the same street. Bair learned that what works in terms of process for one biography rarely applies to the next. Her seven-year relationship with the domineering and difficult de Beauvoir required a radical change in approach, yielding another groundbreaking literary profile and influencing Bair’s own feminist beliefs. Parisian Lives draws on Bair’s extensive notes from the period, including never-before-told anecdotes. This gripping memoir is full of personality and warmth and gives us an entirely new window on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.

Book excerpt: ONE UNICORN, at 48 pages with elaborate full-color illustrations, transforms Medieval unicorn mythology into a fairytale of innocence lost and regained in love’s eternal cycle. In the thirtieth year of his reign, a kind king gets a sad mystical prophecy: he cannot protect his beloved young daughter’s innocence. The next day, that princess finds a perfect flower, whose thorn-prick brings her first tears. From a droplet of her blood and her teardrop, materializes a unicorn. She secretly meets that loving unicorn until her first lie ends her innocence and leads to his killing by waiting hunters. Ultimately, a unicorn returns to her own daughter, after the princess becomes queen. Unicorns appear in ancient Greek writings, in the Judeo-Christian Bible, and in heraldry. Most famous are Medieval images, epitomized by two sets of tapestries depicting a pure maiden and the hunted unicorn, having overtones of holy martyrdom. Seven such tapestries are in the Cloisters collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, New York. Another six unicorn tapestries are in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, France. The author and illustrator, GALE COOPER, is a Harvard educated, M.D. psychiatrist, who has written and illustrated other books on fantasy, animal anatomy, and human interest; and has written both fiction and non-fiction books on the Old West. Bair; Inside Animals; Introduction to Animal Anatomy; Anatomy of the Frog; Anatomy of the Guinea Pig; Joseph Naiman and his Family; Animal Peop≤ Joy of the Birds: A Novel; Billy and Paulita: A Novel; Billy the Kid’s Writings, Words, and Wit; MegaHoax: The Strange Plot to Exhume Billy the Kid and Become President; Billy the Kid’s Pretenders: Brushy Bill and John Miller; and Pardon for Billy the Kid: An Analysis.

    Book Details:
  • Author : François Bondy

  • ISBN : 9781412822992
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book European Notebooks written by François Bondy and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generation of outstanding European thinkers emerged out of the rubble of World War II. It was a group unparalleled in their probing of an age that had produced totalitarianism as a political norm, and the Holocaust as its supreme nightmarish achievement. Figures ranging from George Lichtheim, Ignazio Silone, Raymond Aron, Andrei Amalrik, among many others, found a home in Encounter. None stood taller or saw further than Franois Bondy of Zurich. In a moving tribute to his friend, Melvin J. Lasky, long- time editor of Encounter, writes, "Bondy was a breathtaking spectacle. I had known him to read and walk, to think and talk, all at once--and still make mental notes for his next article.... Early or late, seated or standing, awake or asleep, his incomparable spiritedness would always be darting from point to point, paying attention and idly wandering at once. Taken all in all, he still continues to represent for me perhaps a Henry Jamesian New Man." Bondy's essays themselves represent a broad sweep of major figures and events in the second half of the twentieth century. His spatial outreach went from Budapest to Tokyo and Paris. His political essays extended from George Kennan to Benito Mussolini. And his prime mtier, the cultural figures of Europe, covered Sartre, Kafka, Heidegger and Milosz. The analysis was uniformly fair minded but unstinting in its insights. Taken together, the variegated themes he raised in his work as a Zurich journalist, a Paris editor, and a European homme de letres sketch guidelines for an entrancing portrait of the intellectual as cosmopolitan. European Notebooks contains most of the articles that Bondy (1915-2003) wrote for Encounter under the stewardship of Stephen Spender, Irving Kristol, and then for the thirty years that Melvin Lasky served as editor. Bondy was that rare unattached intellectual, "free of every totalitarian temptation" and, as Lasky notes, unfailing in his devotion to the liberties and civilities of a humane social order. European Notebooks offers a window into a civilization that came to maturity during the period in which these essays were written. Melvin J. Lasky was the editor of Encounter from 1958 until 1990; before that he was the editor of Der Monat in Berlin, and served as foreign correspondent for the New York Times and The Reporter. He is the author of The Hungarian Revolution and Profanity, Obscenity and the Media.
