Book Vine Pruning Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vine Pruning No cultivated plant is susceptible of such a variety of modes of training as the vin-, e and none can withstand such an amount of abuse in this matter and such radical interference with its natural mode of growth On the other hand, no other plant, perhaps, 15 so sensitive to proper treatment, or responds so readily to a rational mode of pruning and training. Objects OF pruning. - The objects of pruning are (a) to facilitate cultivation and gathering, (b) to increase the average yield, and (c) to improve the quality of fruit. The vine must not be trained so high that the grapes are difficult to gather, nor al lowed to spread its arms so wide that the cultivation of the ground is unduly interfered with. Vines untouched by the pruner's knife bear irregularly; a year of over-bearing being followed by several of under-bearing as a consequence of exhaustion caused by a too severe drain on the reserve forces of the plant. The grapes on untrained or improperly trained vines are exposed to different conditions of heat and light, and consequently develop and ripen unevenly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vine Pruning in California There are two great difficulties in the way of reforming the pruning methods in most vineyards. One is the difficulty of obtaining pruners possessed of the necessary skill and knowledge. The other is the lack of the proper knowledge on the part of the owner of the vineyard. Of these difficulties, the latter is by far the more serious in its effects and its removal would in most cases obviate the greater part of the trouble resulting from the former. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pruning Vinifera Grapevines BY separating the influence of pruning from the influence of crop on the growth and fruiting of the vine, new principles of the response of the vine to pruning have been discovered. It has been clearly shown that pruning depresses3 the capacity of the vine for both growth and produc tion. By employing longer (less severe) types of pruning, that is, by retaining more wood at the winter pruning and accompanying th1s with some method of thinning to regulate the crop, a. Method of procedure has been developed which has resulted in the improvement of both qual ity and yield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Wine Grapes for California; Pruning Young Vines; Pruning the Sultanina For the grape-grower who sells his grapes for so much a ton what ever the quality, the question resolves itself into, Which is the heaviest bearer? For the consumer the question means either What grape will pro duce good wine at the minimum cost? Or What grape will produce the best wine irrespective of cost? According to the kind of consumer he happens to be. As quantity and quality are to a great extent inversely proportionate, these views are widely divergent. For the wme-maker the question is a little more. Complicated, but may be stated essentially as, What grape can I handle with the most profit? This profit will depend on the difference between the price he is forced to pay the grower for grapes and that which he can persuade the consumer to pay him for wine. For one class of consumers he must get cheap grapes, for the other he can afford to pay almost any price, providing they are of the right quality. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pruning and Thinning Experiments With Grapes Although the influence of pruning on vigor is utilized in develop ing the desired form of trunk in the training of young vines, once the vineyard is established the grower is primarily concerned with the capacity of the vines to produce large crops of good fruit. Over a long period of years. It must be borne in mind, however that the capacity to produce fruit is dependent on the production of wood; hence, to produce heavy crops over a period of years a vine must not only be capable of maturing a good crop of fruit in a given year but also of maturing a good growth of wood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pruning Accelerating growth. Contradictory as it may at first thought appear, pruning is frequently resorted to to accelerate or augment growth in plants. Weak growing nursery stock is frequently severely cut back during the resting period in order that all the strength of the root may be forced into the formation of a single upright stalk which will make the plant a salable nursery tree. Rejuvenation of old trees - Severe pruning is also resorted to with older plants for the purpose of rejuvenating them. Old apple trees and old shade trees are frequently so treated, in 'order to induce them to throw out strong new shoots. Book Illustrated Catalogue and Price List of Grape Vines Small Fruits c Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Catalogue and Price List of Grape Vines Small Fruits c Classic Reprint written by John G. Burrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue and Price List of Grape Vines, Small Fruits, &C As so much has been recently written on this subject I shall at tempt to give only a few of the most important points, as demon strated by my personal observation. In pruning a young vine, it 1s not wise to be governed so much by its age as by its vigor, the prin cipal object to be obtained is to concentrate the growth in one cane, by this means a considerable advantage is gained over that of al lowing several shoots to remain, as a vine so trained will fruit much sooner and the fruit will be far superior, both in appearance and quality. In pruning older vines in autumn, I have always obtained the most satisfactory results by keeping in view the removal of as much old wood as possible, providing there is sufficient canes of the present season's growth of suitable size with which to replace the old. Such canes will always produce fruit of superior quality and appearance, and at the same time a greater abundance. In selecting canes for fruiting, those of medium size are much to be preferred, say from to {z of an-inch in diameter, from two to five in number, and cut back to 3 to 5 feet in length, according to age and vigor of the vine. Summer psunino. - I find nothing to recommend in summer pruning beyond the removal of all weak and barren shoots which are not capable of producing fine fruit, all such should be removed as soon as the embryo bunches are developed, except such as may be required for next season's fruiting, and pinching at the top wire a few of the most vigorous shoots;which threaten to rob the weaker neighboring ones, allowing only the strongest shoots, one at each joint along the cane which shows the finest bunches, to remain. Many of these will often develop three and even four bunches, if the vine is well set with fruit. These should be thinned according to varieties and size of bunches. For Delawares, two bunches to a shoot will usually be sufficient to insure a crop. If Iona or other varieties producing large bunches, like Highland or Montgomery, one bunch to a shoot will be snfiicient. Aside from this, any further pruning during the growing season has a tendency to weaken and retard the object so much to be desired, the rapid development and early ripening of the fruit. Nature never labors in vain, and there fore the abundance of growth and foliage developed during the summer, are largely stored with essential elements required for the development and ripening of the fruit, during the autumn after the growth of the vine has ceased and should never be removed. These periods are chiefly in early spring, when the occur rence Of night frosts and easterly winds endanger the Opening buds-wand late in autumn, when cold damp weather may render a little artificial heat desirable, either to promote the ripening Of the wood, or pre serve from mouldiness the ripened fruit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Vine At about the same time, a small grape of surpassing beauty and most excellent flavor, attracted the attention of Mr. A. Thomson of Delaware, Ohio, and was exhibited by him at the County Fairs, under the name of the Heath Grape; a few years later, after becoming fully assured of its great value, he introduced it to the public under the name of Delaware. But its great excellence proved a hindrance to its dissemination, for it was claimed that no grape of such high excellence could be of American origin. Mr. Thomson had become intimately acquainted with the characteristics of foreign vines, from those growing in his own house as well as from extensive observation, and never doubted as to the native origin of the Delaware, but was too modest to make strenuous efforts to vindicate his Opinions, although he never failed positively to assert his convictions. In consequence of various hindrances and discouragements, he did not vigorously undertake its propagation, and therefore it had little opportunity to make itself generally known as the American grape, but in the mean while, its character for beauty and excellence has not deteriorated, and in size of bunch and berry, it has greatly increased as Opportunity for development has been afforded.
