Jules Cartell has it all: wealth; beauty; a handsome, loving husband; a partnership in her father's law firm; and the top executive position at one of Canada's leading corporations, Cartell Worldwide. Aside from her secret, problematic desire for the married owner of the internationally renowned Château Bergé, Jules believes she and her life are pretty perfect. But the discovery of an unforgivable crime perpetrated against her family by her husband, Phillip, years before the two met sets Jules down the path of revenge. There is no option for forgiveness. Philip has to pay. An eye for an eye. It is said that when seeking revenge, you should dig two graves. Someone from Jules's past, someone aggrieved by her actions, seeks vengeance for themselves. This is an enemy without compassion, without morality, without mercy. An enemy who will accept no restitution short of Jules's death. In the city of Fairporte, ON, secrets, lies, and betrayal can be found everywhere. As adversaries close in, will Jules get revenge before her past catches up with her? Unexpected allies may be instrumental to her success. They may also be the key to her very survival.

Book Getting Even

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrie G. Murphy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-03-27
  • ISBN : 9780198034551
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Getting Even written by Jeffrie G. Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have all been victims of wrongdoing. Forgiving that wrongdoing is one of the staples of current pop psychology dogma; it is seen as a universal prescription for moral and mental health in the self-help and recovery section of bookstores. At the same time, personal vindictiveness as a rule is seen as irrational and immoral. In many ways, our thinking on these issues is deeply inconsistent; we value forgiveness yet at the same time now use victim-impact statements to argue for harsher penalties for criminals. Do we have a right to hate others for what they have done to us? The distinguished philosopher and law professor Jeffrie Murphy is a skeptic when it comes to our views on both emotions. In this short and accessible book, he proposes that vindictive emotions (anger, resentment, and the desire for revenge) actually deserve a more legitimate place in our emotional, social, and legal lives than we currently recognize, while forgiveness deserves to be more selectively granted. Murphy grounds his views on careful analysis of the nature of forgiveness, a subtle understanding of the psychology of anger and resentment, and a fine appreciation of the ethical issues of self-respect and self-defense. He also uses accessible examples from law, literature, and religion to make his points. Providing a nuanced approach to a proper understanding of the place of our strongest emotions in moral, political, and personal life, and using lucid, easily understood prose, this volume is a classic example of philosophical thinking applied to a thorny, everyday problem.

Book Person Centered Diagnosis and Treatment in Mental Health

Download or read book Person Centered Diagnosis and Treatment in Mental Health written by Peter Ladd and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clients with mental health conditions are often diagnosed and treated using a strictly medical model of diagnosis, with little input from the client themselves. This reference manual takes a person-centered, holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment, seeing the client as the unrecognized expert on their condition and encouraging their collaboration. This qualitative approach aims to find meaning in the experiences of the client, exploring the reasons behind their feelings and behaviour and taking the whole person into account. Designed to complement DSM assessments, the manual covers several different conditions including ADHD, depression, bulimia, and OCD, as well as mental health 'patterns' such as abuse, bullying, violence and loss. In each case, the client is involved in the diagnosis and treatment plan. The book features extended case studies, sample questions and treatment plans throughout. This will be an essential reference book for all those involved in mental health diagnosis and treatment, including psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health counselors, clinical social workers, school counselors and therapists.

Book Cruel God Kind God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zenon Lotufo Jr.
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2012-04-13
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Cruel God Kind God written by Zenon Lotufo Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening analysis of the image of a cruel God sustained by conservative Christianity reveals how this image formed, the psychological effects of this concept, and the ways in which it has guided religious individuals—in both positive and negative ways. This book is born, in large measure, as a result of a writing by contemporary theologian J. Harold Ellens. In his essay "Religious Metaphors Can Kill" from Praeger's The Destructive Power of Religion, Ellens espouses that theological doctrines are rooted in a model of God that determines all the aspects of those doctrines, and strongly influences the cultures into which it is inserted. Conservative Christianity in the Western world, says Ellens, has at its center the image of a cruel and wrathful God. The juridical atonement theory of Anselm is a result of such an image of God, and has an important role in justifying the resort to violence in human interaction. Starting from these considerations, Cruel God, Kind God: How Images of God Shape Belief, Attitude, and Outlook analyzes three general topics: how two very different kinds of Christianities have emerged from these disparate images of God; how the doctrines of "original sin," "the plan of salvation," and "penal substitution" can be explained by psychological factors, as can the wide dissemination and acceptance of these doctrines; and how the image of a cruel God affects mental health, atrophies personality, and produces guilt and shame.

Book Adjudicative Criminal Procedure

Download or read book Adjudicative Criminal Procedure written by Jens David Ohlin and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjudicative Criminal Procedure: Doctrine, Application, and Practice, Second Edition, is designed to respond to the changing nature of teaching law by offering a flexible approach with an emphasis on application. Each chapter focuses on Supreme Court cases that articulate the constitutional requirements, while call-out boxes outline statutes or state constitutional law provisions that impose more stringent rules. Short problem cases, also in boxes, ask students to apply these principles to new fact patterns. Each chapter ends with a Practice and Policy section that delves deeper into the conceptual and practical obstacles to the realization of procedural rights in the daily practice of criminal law. The result is a modular format, presented in a lively visual style, which recognizes and supports the diverse pedagogical approaches of today’s leading criminal procedure professors. New to the Second Edition: Coverage of Ramos v. Louisiana (2020) and simplified discussion of the constitutional requirement of jury unanimity, replacing the chaotic situation from Apodaca and its confusing array of overlapping plurality opinions. Supreme Court’s decision in Edwards v. Vannoy (2021) that Ramos does not apply retroactively on federal habeas review. Materials on retroactivity and habeas, often perplexing for students, are presented in clear and simple terms. Benefits for instructors and students: A mixture of classic and new Supreme Court cases on criminal procedure. Call-out boxes that outline statutory requirements. Call-out boxes that focus on more demanding state law rules. Problem cases that require students to apply the law to new facts. A Practice and Policy section which allows a deeper investigation of doctrinal and policy controversies, but whose placement at the end of each chapter maximizes instructors’ freedom to focus on the materials that most interest them. Modest number of notes and questions, inviting closer examination of doctrine and generating class discussion, without overwhelming or distracting students. Innovative pedagogy, emphasizing application of law to facts (while still retaining enough flexibility to be useful for a variety of professors with different teaching styles) Logical organization and manageable length. Open, two-color design with appealing visual elements (including carefully selected photographs).
