Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new theoretical approach to the analysis of the law/revenge binary, and attempts to dismantle the common idea of revenge as lacking any legal, moral or rational dimension. In contrast, the book puts forward a model of a complex system of justice—which it terms 'vindicatory'—wherein vendetta constitutes an authorized action, the core of which does not (just) lie in vengeance but also in settlement procedures for peace—or 'composition.' The first part of the book ("Vindicatory Justice: Conceptual Analyses and Forerunners") seeks to identify the nature of vindicatory justice and to shed light on the structure of so-called vindicatory systems. In turn, the second part ("Mapping Vindicatory Justice") illustrates, using examples gathered from a range of sociolegal contexts, the dynamic relationship between composition and authorized revenge in vindicatory systems. Taken as a whole, the volume shows that applying a longue durée historical perspective to the study of revenge systems allows us to clearly recognize composition and authorized revenge as features of the same legal system, even though one of them may seem predominant (or more eye-catching) than the other in certain cultural settings.

Book Christian Apologetics Past and Present Volume 2 From 1500

Download or read book Christian Apologetics Past and Present Volume 2 From 1500 written by William Edgar and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid a revival of apologetics, “few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with how Christian faith was defended down through the ages,” say the editors in their introduction to this two-part anthology. “Access to both historical and contemporary texts gives us fresh insight into how our fathers in the faith responded to the questions facing them.” Volume 2 in this one-of-a-kind resource takes a sweeping look at apologetics from the Reformation to the present. Readings from twenty-six apologists, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Francis Schaeffer, Alvin Plantinga, and William Lane Craig are included. With editorial commentary and questions for reflection, Christian Apologetics Past and Present will prove a valuable text for students as well as a unique resource for those interested in defending the faith.

Book Cultural Theory after 9 11

Download or read book Cultural Theory after 9 11 written by Robert Doran and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of material seeks to interpret the events of September 11, 2001 from the perspective of cultural theory — that is, from the perspective of anthropological and social forces that motivate human beings and give meaning to their thoughts, actions, and feelings. Though contributors to this volume work within various disciplines, their approach is necessarily holistic—because of the very nature of the event, which resonates on many levels and in diverse spheres of human activity. Clearly the perception of who one’s enemy is has a cultural and psychological impact that goes far beyond the superficial media representations consumed on a daily basis; the very curriculum of American universities has been altered as a result of the 9/11 attacks, and this will have profound and far-reaching effects.

Book Priesthood of Christ The Atonement in the Theology of John Owen 1616 1683

Download or read book Priesthood of Christ The Atonement in the Theology of John Owen 1616 1683 written by Edwin E M Tay and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite wide acclaim for John Owen (1616-1683) as the leading representative of the Reformed doctrine of particular atonement, a thorough examination of Owen's views on the atonement has yet to be undertaken. This work is the first full-scale monograph on Owen's atonement theology and therefore fills the apparent lacuna. Drawing on recent historiographical studies on the intellectual history of Protestant Orthodoxy and the full range of Owen's writings, the author demonstrates that at the heart of Owen's atonement theology is his peculiar understanding of Christ's priesthood conceived in terms of the oblation and intercession of Christ, performed in the states of humiliation and exaltation. COMMENDATION "Edwin Tay presents a vivid and valuable portrait of John Owen's atonement theology. His book, elegantly written and meticulously researched, brings a fresh and original approach to a key theme in Owen's writings." - Susan Hardman Moore, University of Edinburgh, UK
