Book Vincenzo Sellaro and the Sons of Italy in America

Download or read book Vincenzo Sellaro and the Sons of Italy in America written by Carmelo Cutuli and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the life and achievements of Vincenzo Sellaro, from his birth in Polizzi Generosa, a rocky village in the province of Palermo, to his emigration to the United States and the founding of the Sons of Italy in America. The Sicilian doctor Vincenzo Sellaro dedicated his life to improving the conditions of his compatriots who emigrated to America. Founder, in 1905, of the Sons of Italy, an organization later known as the Figli d'Italia in America, then the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) and today the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA), Sellaro played a significant role in supporting Italians who moved to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. What began as a great brotherhood to provide support to the new Italian arrivals has today become a social, patriotic, and charitable institution for American citizens of Italian descent, dedicated to preserving Italian culture in the United States. The story of Vincenzo Sellaro and his organization is an example of how one person can make a difference in the lives of thousands of people and in the evolution of a community. His legacy, in fact, continues to live on today through the organization he founded, and through the Italian-American community that continues to honor his name and memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire Italian American experience—from America's earliest days through the present—is now available in a single volume. This wide-ranging work relates the entire saga of the Italian-American experience from immigration through assimilation to achievement. The book highlights the enormous contributions that Italian Americans—the fourth largest European ethnic group in the United States—have made to the professions, politics, academy, arts, and popular culture of America. Going beyond familiar names and stories, it also captures the essence of everyday life for Italian Americans as they established communities and interacted with other ethnic groups. In this single volume, readers will be able to explore why Italians came to America, where they settled, and how their distinctive identity was formed. A diverse array of entries that highlight the breadth of this experience, as well as the multitude of ways in which Italian Americans have influenced U.S. history and culture, are presented in five thematic sections. Featured primary documents range from a 1493 letter from Christopher Columbus announcing his discovery to excerpts from President Barack Obama's 2011 speech to the National Italian American Foundation. Readers will come away from this book with a broader understanding of and greater appreciation for Italian Americans' contributions to the United States.

Book excerpt: Often separated from other immigrants because of their language, Italian immigrants to New York City in the 1880s formed communities apart from their new neighbors. They tended to think of themselves collectively as a small Italian colony, La Colonia, that made up part of the demographics of the city. In each of the five boroughs, Italians set up many colonie. Several of them dotted Manhattan in East Harlem, the West Village, what is now SoHo, and the downtown area of the Lower East Side, straddling Canal Street, which still identifies Manhattan's Little Italy, the best-known Italian neighborhood in America. Little Italy is made up of stunning photographs culled from numerous private and public collections. It begins with the first phase of immigrants to Lower Manhattan in the early 1800s, including political and religious refugees such as Lorenzo Da Ponte and Giuseppe Garibaldi. In the 1870s, more and more Italian immigrants settled in Little Italy. As the neighborhood grew up around the former Anthony and Orange Streets, New York's first "Little Italy" emerged. The tumultuous history of the Five Points area, the "Bloody Ole Sixth Ward," and many faces and memories from the Italian newspapers L'Eco d'Italia and Il Progresso Italo-Americano are also included in this long-awaited pictorial history.

Download or read book Rome in America written by Peter R. D'Agostino and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, historians have argued that Catholicism in the United States stood decisively apart from papal politics in European society. The Church in America, historians insist, forged an "American Catholicism," a national faith responsive to domestic concerns, disengaged from the disruptive ideological conflicts of the Old World. Drawing on previously unexamined documents from Italian state collections and newly opened Vatican archives, Peter D'Agostino paints a starkly different portrait. In his narrative, Catholicism in the United States emerges as a powerful outpost within an international church that struggled for three generations to vindicate the temporal claims of the papacy within European society. Even as they assimilated into American society, Catholics of all ethnicities participated in a vital, international culture of myths, rituals, and symbols that glorified papal Rome and demonized its liberal, Protestant, and Jewish opponents. From the 1848 attack on the Papal States that culminated in the creation of the Kingdom of Italy to the Lateran Treaties in 1929 between Fascist Italy and the Vatican that established Vatican City, American Catholics consistently rose up to support their Holy Father. At every turn American liberals, Protestants, and Jews resisted Catholics, whose support for the papacy revealed social boundaries that separated them from their American neighbors.

Book Italians of Greater Cincinnati

Download or read book Italians of Greater Cincinnati written by Philip G. Ciafardini and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italians of Greater Cincinnati focuses on the Italian immigration into the Cincinnati area beginning in the early 1800s. The northern Italians were the first to arrive, followed by those in the south of Italy, including Sicily. In the spring of 1892, plans were being made to build a Catholic church for the estimated 4,000 Italian immigrants. In 1897, two biological Italian immigrant sisters, who had joined the religious order of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, Sr. Blandina and Sr. Justina Segale, began their life's work with the poor immigrants living in the Cincinnati area. Today descendants of these early immigrants, as well as those who arrived in the 20th century, continue to celebrate their rich Italian heritage through social clubs and community involvement. The photographs contained in this volume detail the lives of the Italians as they strived to become Americans.
