Book Hidden History of Vincennes Knox County

Download or read book Hidden History of Vincennes Knox County written by Brian Spangle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Fort Sackville appears in every history of Vincennes and Knox County, yet so much more defines this area. Everyone is familiar with George Rogers Clark, but few know about ordinary but accomplished figures like diplomat Hubbard Taylor Smith and Civil War veteran Joseph Roseman. The Stibbins murder of 1911 and other long-forgotten crimes once shocked the county, and visits by politicians and entertainers, including Buffalo Bill Cody, enthralled residents before quickly slipping from memory. Weather made history, too, such as the destructive hailstorm that pounded northern Knox County in 1907. With the help of rare photographs, local historian and Sun-Commercial columnist Brian Spangle brings to life these stories and more.

CHAPTER XXV. i DISTINGUISHED PERSONNEL. Tinceiines has been a common center in which congregated an array of able and determined man. Most of these became permanent residents. Many after a short sojourn went in every direction to lav the foundations of society in other places, to frame constitutions and laws for the well being of generations of civilized people, and to exercise power and authority over countries of vast extent. It is impossible in a proper limit to enumerate all. Only chosen examples illustrative of the qualities of the men who laid the foundations of our social structure will be presented. FRANCOIS MORGAN DE VINCENNE. This distinguished man was a Canadian by birth. He was a trusted officer in 'the service of the King of France. He came here in command of the troops of the king to build the old fort in 1702. He came and built the fort near the present site of the Catholic church. He did not remain after performing that service, but returned to Canada. He was there entrusted with an expedition against the Indians near Detroit, which was successful. The last mention of him in the Canadian records is by Le Potheric, who says he was sent to command the fort on the "Ouabasche." When he came, then he remained until his death. He married a daughter of Philip Longpre, of Kaskaskia, Illinois. His father-in-law died in 1732 and left a large estate which was divided among his children. The records in the Recorder's office'at Kaskaskia show that de Vincenne went there to look after his wife's interest and that his wife was then at the Post here. The receipt for her to sign for her share was sent here and she signed it before witnesses. This receipt is still preserved in the Recorder's office at Kaskaskia. In 1736 the French were at...

Book excerpt: A gay man returns to his conservative hometown in a tale of memory and murder inspired by true events: “An emotionally resonant, page-turning story.”—Booklist Some Go Hungry is a fictional account drawn from the author’s own experiences working in his family’s provincial Indiana restaurant, and wrestling with his sexual orientation, in a town that was rocked by the scandalous murder of his gay high school classmate in the 1980s. Now a young man who has embraced his sexuality, Grey Daniels returns from Miami Beach, Florida, to Fort Sackville, Indiana, to run Daniels’ Family Buffet for his ailing father. Understanding that knowledge of his sexuality may reap disastrous results on his family's half-century-old restaurant legacy—a popular Sunday dinner spot for the after-church crowd—Grey struggles to live his authentic, openly gay life. But he is truly put to the test when his former high school lover—and fellow classmate of the murdered student—returns to town as the youth pastor and choir director of the local fundamentalist Christian church. Some Go Hungry is the story of a man forced to choose between the happiness of others and his own joy, all the while realizing that compromising oneself—sacrificing your soul for the sake of others—is not living, but death. “This literary mystery follows Grey Daniels on a return trip to his hometown of Fort Sackville, Indiana where, decades earlier, one of his gay classmates was brutally murdered. While visiting, Grey must confront a painful past riddled in homophobia, secrets, religious hypocrisy and fear.”—Queerty “Some Go Hungry is at its best when confronting religious prejudice, and is even pulse-quickening when the narrator sits through one of his friend's sermons aimed directly at him....Only someone who has grown up in rural America could write so convincingly of the pressures there. It's also refreshing to find a book that relates the experience of being gay somewhere other than in a large city.”—Gay & Lesbian Review “Tells an important tale that in some ways is timeless, and in other ways could have been ripped from today's headlines.”—Mark Childress, author of Crazy in Alabama
