Download or read book The Italian Garden written by John Dixon Hunt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian gardens vary widely according to their historical date and geographic location. This collection approaches Italian gardens of all periods, from the middle ages to modern times, and it ranges widely throughout the peninsula, from Genoa to Sicily, the Veneto to Liguria, and Ferrara to Florence. The authors are a distinguished group of Italian, American, English and German scholars, with different backgrounds in art history, literature, architecture, planning, and cultural history. The explorations of the subject from these different perspectives illuminate not only their own disciplines, but are concerned to make many fresh connections between garden art and the politics of nationalism, between the art of gardens and urban infrastructure, between cultural movements like freemasonry and site planning, between design and planting materials. The book offers therefore a narrative of the garden by selecting ten high points of its history, which are introduced with a consideration by the volume editor of the fresh challenges to contemporary Italian garden history.

Download or read book Landscape Lab written by Fabio Bianconi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the sciences of representation and the strategy of landscape valorisation. The topic is connected to the theme of the image of the city, which is extended to the territory scale and applied to case studies in Italy’s Umbria region, where the goal is to strike a dynamic balance between cultural heritage and nature. The studies demonstrate how landscape represents an interpretive process of finding meaning, a product of the relationships between mankind and the places in which it lives. The work proceeds from the assumption that it is possible to describe these connections between environment, territory and landscape by applying the Vitruvian triad, composed of Firmitas (solidity), Utilitas (utility) and Venustas(beauty). The environment, the sum of the conditions that influence all life, represents the place’s solidity, because it guarantees its survival. In turn, territory is connected to utility, and through its etymological meaning is linked to possession, to a domain; while landscape, as an “area perceived by people”, expresses the search for beauty in a given place, the process of critically interpreting a vision.

Download or read book AgriCultura written by Lionella Scazzosi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how cultural heritage can be a tool for enhancing urban agriculture and improving landscape and life quality. It cuts across the existing literature and fills the gaps between urban agriculture, considered as a food, social and environmental opportunity and cultural heritage, considered as resource. It focuses the role of the countryside for urban areas, in the history of the city and today. Its attention is on the quality for all areas, both outstanding, ordinary and degraded, as well as large, little or fragmented (European landscape convention 2000). It considers agricultural landscape as a system of tangible and intangible heritage components and relationships, to be retained, enhanced and transmit, in a process of inevitable but appropriate dynamic conservation and management over time (ICOMOS-IFLA Principles 2017). This book can benefit the collaboration among local players – such as farmers, citizens, associations, public institutions, stakeholders – in conserving and enhancing agrarian heritage and reinforcing the identity of places and people. It can strengthen collective action and generate positive effects on good large and local -scale management. The first part has a methodological character in order to enlighten the integrated approach between cultural heritage and urban agriculture. The second part exemplifies cases where the heritage has been recognised but not yet translated into concrete action. The third Part discloses ongoing process of co-construction, where policies have recognized the cultural, environmental and social meaning of urban agriculture as heritage. This book aims to reach scholars, local administrations, professionals, farmers and citizens. It involves many authors, many of whom are directly engaged with action-research in safeguarding and implementing the mutual interaction between urban agriculture activities and agrarian heritage.

Book excerpt: "... oggi Genova ci interessa [...] non tanto per la fisicità della sua architettura (e ce n'e' di buona, anche moderna e contemporanea), quanto per la vivacità della sua cultura progettuale. Anche in un contesto come quello Nord Americano, al quale noi come Kent State University ci rivolgiamo in modo particolare, dove i rapporti con storia, geografi a e culture hanno ovviamente tempi, scale, nature e modi assai diversi, il caso Genova può ancora emergere come modello da studiare per la sua complessità e intelligenza progettuale = ...Genoa interests us today [...] not so much for the physicality of its architecture (and there are very good examples, also modern and contemporary) as for the liveliness of its planning culture. Even in a context like that of North America, which we at Kent State Unviersity look at with a special eye, where the relations with history, geography and cultures obviously are marked by very different times, scales, natures, and ways of doing things, the case of Genoa can emerge as a model to be studied for the complexity and intelligence of its design"--Page 4 of cover.
