Book excerpt: Earth was never going back to normal. All that was left in the post-apocalyptic destruction were humans trying to find enough food to survive ... and running from the aliens who had come to scavenge what was left. Raine had never been a particularly brave woman. She preferred staying at home, sipping on a latte while reading a good romance book, rather than making an effort to become hurt by a real relationship. She only managed to survive the nuclear war by being at the right place at the right time. Now, as if having to contend with lack of food and dodging different species of aliens wanting to make her their next meals wasn't bad enough, the other survivors in her group blame her for being a jinx for every catastrophe that has happened to them. How was she supposed to know the feral man who she had saved was an alien Viking from Mars? How could it be her fault that, when she snuck out to check on him, two other women from her group followed and got themselves kidnapped? And, how could she be blamed for finding herself married to an alien by the simple act of saving his life? She wasn't a jinx; she was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, it hurt that her new husband was beginning to think the same way as the group of survivors and wanted to give her back to the humans. While she wasn't crazy about the Martian side of Skars, the Viking part of her husband was hot and, like any heroine from the stories she had read, she was determined to prove her worth to him. Well, if she wasn't barbecued first.

This encyclopedia explores exactly how they did it in a highly readable and informative resource volume. How did the Vikings know when to strike? What were their military strengths? Who were their leaders? What was the impact of their raids? These and many more questions are answered in this volume, which will benefit students and general readers alike. The only encyclopedia devoted specifically to the topic of conflict, invasions, and raids in the Viking Age, this book presents detailed coverage of the Vikings, who are infamous for their violent marauding across Europe during the early Middle Ages. Featuring extracts of poetry and prose from the Viking Age, the book provides cultural context in addition to an in-depth analysis of Viking military practices.

Book excerpt: The forest was young when humanity was old, and now the forest was old... "It's a spring morning and I can love you like no one has loved for millions of years," she told him when they rested. "We aren't old; the stars are old. We're young. We are ten million years young and it's all just beginning." The planet shuddered in agreement, and some rocks fell in the distance. The saga of Mars after the Vikings is told by noted hard science fiction author G. David Nordley in a series of tales from the first landing in Martian Valkyrie; through a race to save a life in A Life on Mars; with terraformers called Comet Gypsies; during the first alien contact in The Day of Their Coming; and to the far distant future of human and Martian evolution in Morning on Mars. The stories unfold one by one as, under a dying sun, alien archaeologists uncover the mysteries of the Red Planet's rich and varied future history.

NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars orbit by the 2030s. SpaceX wants to go by 2024, while Mars One wants to land a permanent settlement there in 2032. As we gear up for missions like these, we have a responsibility to think deeply about what kinds of life may already inhabit the planet -- and whether we have the right to invite ourselves in. This book tells the complete story of the quest to answer one of the most tantalizing questions in astronomy. But it is more than a history. Life on Mars explains what we need to know before we go."--From Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: The planet Mars has been a subject of wonder for millennia, as attested by its place in mythology, by later speculation about its canals, and by the scientific and public excitement over the Viking mission. Although the scientific literature about the planet is voluminous, no comprehensive treatment of the results of modern spacecraft exploration has yet been made available. This volume fills that gap by providing a summary of what is presently known about Mars and identifying many puzzles such as polar cap variance, occurrence of dust storms, and the possible location of water. The introductory chapter cites questions, controversies, and milestones in the study of Mars, and also includes an annotated book list, basic data about the planet, and a guide to Martian seasons. A chapter on telescopic observation credits the contributions made by many amateurs that have advanced our knowledge of variations observed on Mars. A chapter on spacecraft exploration, by an American and a Russian author who have participated in all Mars missions, includes a revelation of an additional Soviet attempt. Twenty-nine technical articles cover geophysics; bedrock geology; surface; atmosphere; exosphere and magnetic field; and climate history. Two chapters address the search for life on Mars; three concluding chapters consider the Martian satellites. An indispensable reference for scientists, Mars will also serve as a complete sourcebook for serious amateur astronomers.
