This book was released on 1984 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deterioration of seed performance accumulates during storage. The seeds of most agronomic crops are significantly affected by this occurrence. Reversal or rejuvenation of aged seeds is therefore of primary interest. The objective of this study was to test a contemporary hypothesis regarding rejuvenation of aged seeds. Experiments relying heavily on accelerated aging and priming were designed to test this hypothesis. Information concerning both seed deterioration and its reversal resulted from the study. Seed tissue was shown by tetrazoiium staining to age most rapidly at symmetrical locations on the cotyledons. Aged tissue was in turn predisposed to imbibition injury which accounted tor most of the loss of performance in aged seeds, When this injury was avoided by slow hydration, reversal of the sensitivity to imbibition injury was demonstrated. This reversal was a temperature dependent process. Slow hydration followed by dehydration improved the survival of seeds during accelerated aging demonstrating that loss of seed vigor was also reversible. These results were consistent with the hypothesis that age related deterioration was reversed by pre-germination metabolism. Alternative explanations may account for these results but the hypothesis tested could not be rejected based on the observations. The significance of these findings applies to agronomy and to seed physiology. New information was learned regarding seed performance improvement through priming. This information may have application for increasing the performance of seeds after long term storage. The processes under study may relate to natural survival mechanisms in dry seeds.

Book Aged Soybean Glycine Max L Merrill Seeds

Download or read book Aged Soybean Glycine Max L Merrill Seeds written by Soja Sekharan and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The physiology of seed deterioration was studied with accelerated and naturally aged soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds. Accelerated aged (AA) seeds of "Flint" were aged for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h at 41 and 43°C and 100% relative humidity. Seedling vigor analyses for vigor index and growth were analyzed with scanned images of 3d-old seedlings. Embryonic and cotyledonary tissues from 3d-old seedlings were used for mitochondrial isolation and specific enzyme activity studies. In cotyledonary tissues, respiratory activities were lower than embryonic tissues. Antioxidant activities of glutathione peroxidase were at high levels in accelerated aged embryonic tissues. Increased oxygen uptake measurements with reduced b-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and reduced oxidation with succinate as substrates indicated respiratory capacities of isolated mitochondria. Oxygen uptake with both these substrates was higher in embryonic mitochondria than from cotyledons. These studies emphasize that specific enyme activities in mitochondria increased in embryonic tissues and decreased in storage tissues of soybean seeds subjected to AA treatment. Transmission electron microscopy of the ultra-structure of mitochondria from embryonic tissues of aged seeds indicated damage to inner membranes. Seedling vigor was studied with an automated imaging technique called the Seedling Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®). Following AA, the aged seeds of "Flint" were treated with a seed coating fungicide, Rival® [Captan N-Trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide)], to reduce storage fungal infection. Germination, dead seed percentages and SVIS® parameters such as growth, vigor index and uniformity were highly significant for AA duration, temperature and Rival® treatment. Independent experiments with "Kottman" seeds were tested with SVIS® for seedling vigor effects on standardized germination testing protocols such as alternating temperatures of 20-30°C and 25°C, water content in germination papers and time of scan. Intra- and inter-seed lot variability of seed lots was also evaluated. These studies emphasize that mitochondrial activities differ in tissues of aged seeds and SVIS® could be used for seedling vigor testing in soybean.

Book Effects of Short Periods of Accelerated Aging on Soybean glycine Mas l Merrill Seeds

Download or read book Effects of Short Periods of Accelerated Aging on Soybean glycine Mas l Merrill Seeds written by Petrus Bulan and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeds of Braxton and Dare soybean cultivars were germinated after stored with or without drying it at 30 C following accelerated aging (AA) in high moisture level (approx. 100% RH) at 40 C for 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hour periods. germination of seeds of both cultivars periods had the greatest effect on seed of germination. The beneficial effects of these short periods of AA on grmination performance of soybean seeds were brief and dissipated or become negative when the aged seeds were stored for any appreciable period. The harmful effects of aging was evident at 0 day for the 72 hr. AA period and increased rapidly as planting was delayed after the aging treatment. [Author's abstract].

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Third Edition of Principles of Seed Science and Technology. like the first two editions. is written for the advanced undergraduate student or lay person who desires an introduction to the science and technology ofseeds. The first eight chapters presentthe seed as abiologicalsystemand coverits origin. development. composition. function (and sometimes nonfunctionJ, performance and ultimate deterioration. The last seven chapters present the fundamentals ofhow seedsare produced. conditioned. evaluated and distributed in our modern agricultural society. A new chapter on seed enhancement has been added to reflect the significant advancements made in the last 10 years on new physiological and molecular biology techniques to further enhance seed performance. Because of the fundamental importance of seeds to both agriculture and to all of society. we have taken great care to present the science and technology of seeds with the respect and feeling this study deserves. We hope that this feeling will becommuni cated to our readers. Furthermore. we have attempted to present information in a straight-forward. easy-to-read manner that will be easily understood by students and lay persons alike. Special care has been taken to address both current state-of-the-art as well as future trends in seed technology. . We believe this Third Edition represents a new level in presenting information that appeals to advanced undergraduate students as well as to those desiring more fundamental information on seed form and function. At the same time. it continues to havethestrengths ofthe firsttwoeditions.initsreadabilityaswellas itscomprehensive coverage of the broader area of seed science and technology.
