Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stirling Castle is one of Scotland's most famous historical sites and one that featured prominently in Scottish history. Associated particularly with the Stewart kings, its chequered history is inter-woven with details on the architectural changes made to the buildings through time. The withdrawl of the army from the castle in 1964 paved the way for a major campaign of conservation and restoration which forms the focus of this publication. A series of experts involved in this campaign report on the work carried out and reveal hidden details on this important building. Richard Fawcett looks at the architecture overall, Michael Lynch at the Great Hall in the reigns of Mary and James VI, Doreen Grove studies the militarisation of the castle, Iain MacIvor the decision to restore the Hall, and Ingval Maxwell, Peter Buchanan, Gordon Ewart and Duncan Peet deal with the different stages and procedures involved in the restoration, surveying and recording of the castle buildings.

Now, in the glow of the moonlight, she defiantly shows Duncan the bad end of a pistol. Jeannie is stunned to discover that the broad-chested brigand she just shot is the rogue who broke her heart years ago. No longer a starry-eyed girl but a woman with dangerous secrets, Jeannie cannot forgive Duncan’s shattering mistrust of her–nor can she sign his death warrant by turning him in. Soon passion flares hotter and bolder than before, sealing a fate the onetime lovers can no longer deny. Caught up in a deadly game of murder and intrigue, Jeannie is willing to risk everything for a man and a love she vows never to lose again.

Book excerpt: This illustrated book contains the history of Stirling Castle in Scotland, a place famous for its beautiful design, for accommodating various royals and for its decisive role in Medieval wars. The author tackles the various facets of Stirling Castle's history, beginning with how the site of the building was selected for its geography. The rugged, hilly landscapes were considered ideal for defensive structures - the County of Stirling was the site of several decisive battles between the Scots and the English. The strenuous efforts of King Edward I, who sought to subdue Scotland just as he had subdued Wales, resulted in Stirling Castle becoming an emblem of Scottish strength and resistance. Significantly, the great fort was chosen as the birthplace for royal children, with James VI being the last monarch of Scotland to choose Stirling Castle for this purpose. Following the 17th century, and with gunpowder rendering its defenses obsolete, the castle's military purpose ceased and it became instead a monument to Scotland's history and culture. The concluding chapters of this book note the presence of Stirling in poetry, and the fact it accommodated many distinguished guests. The architecture and design of the fort is detailed along with drawings, allowing the reader the greatest comprehension.
