Book Vietnamese Children s Home A Special Case for Care

Download or read book Vietnamese Children s Home A Special Case for Care written by C. Mougne and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an account of life in a home for Vietnamese refugee children run by the Save the Children Fund in the United Kingdom. It is aimed at drawing attention to the issues which continue to affect such children, and at providing information for future international debate on appropriate care for unaccompanied refugee minors. The report consists of an introduction and five sections: 1) background, including a comparison of resettlement policy in Britain and other receiving countries; 2) the development of Save the Children Fund's policy towards these refugee children; 3) day-to-day operation of the children's home; 4) a profile of the children in the home and the efforts made towards family reunion or resettlement; and 5) conclusion. The author emphasizes the importance of appropriate forward planning by both government and NGOs to cope with the arrival of unaccompanied refugee minors, and the need for providing adequate education in the English language and their own language and culture. Among the problems encountered by the agency were delays in government decisions regarding applications for family reunion, and a lack of clarification as to whether legal responsibility for the unaccompanied minors lay with government or the NGO. In conclusion, the author calls for coordinated research at international level, with the collaboration of UNHCR, governments and NGOs, to assess and provide guidelines on the alternative forms of placement for unaccompanied refugee minors.

Book From Mayo Clinic to Vietnam

Download or read book From Mayo Clinic to Vietnam written by James V. Donadio, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. James V. Donadio Jr. was fresh out of his medical residency training in 1966 when he was drafted into the United States Army Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam to supervise a renal (kidney) unit at the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon. In From the Military Draft to Vietnam: Memoirs of a Physician Serving in the War, Dr. Donadio looks back at his year of treating American soldiers wounded on the battlefield. During his service there, he also cared for Vietnamese civilians in outpatient clinics and Vietnamese children in nearby orphanages. Dr. Donadio found the unique medical practice in the war zone to be both challenging and rewarding, but leaving behind his wife and four children for a year was painful and required extra mental effort on his part to push ahead and attend to his medical responsibilities. His faith also helped him during his time there, and he was honored to serve as Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman's attending physician during the Cardinal's Christmas 1966 tour of the combat zone. Dr. Donadio's memoirs included both his recollections of these experiences backed by a vast assembly of documentary sources.

Download or read book Haven or Hell written by D. Joly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together in a systematic manner three discrete areas of interest pertaining to refugees. Asylum is explored through studies on the evolution of legal instruments in Europe, the harmonisation process of European policies, and the broader spectrum of factors underpinning decisions on asylum. Reception and settlement of refugees are analysed through a comparative study of national programmes in France and Britain and in addition a survey of local authority policies. A typology for refugees is developed and tested by a comparison between Chilean and Vietnamese associations in France and Britain.

Book New Perspectives on Mutual Dependency in Care Giving

Download or read book New Perspectives on Mutual Dependency in Care Giving written by Adéla Souralová and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars see caregiving relationships as being based on mutual dependency or interdependency. Extensively cited notions of the ’global care chain’ or ’international division of reproductive labour’ have prepared the ground for analysis of global interdependencies in several domains. This book goes further by taking mutual dependency as a starting point for analysing all relationships. Using the example of Vietnamese families in the Czech Republic and the Czech native nannies, it shows how paid caregiving is contextualized in terms of various relationships between three types of actors: employer-employee, caring for the child, and mother-child. All of these ties are based on ontologically different principles and each of them operates as a piece of a puzzle, which is meaningful only in relation to each other. Souralová considers caregiving to be a formative activity that establishes ties between the concerned actors, whose subjectivities are mutually shaped in the daily practice of caregiving. With its stress on mutuality in care work, this ground-breaking book illuminates the new forms of interpersonal, interethnic, and intergenerational relationships and highlights the mechanisms and processes in which kinship ties are negotiated and reproduced.

Book excerpt: Combining anthropology with advocacy, this book presents the voices and experiences of Vietnamese refugee children neglected and abused by the system intended to help them. The hardships these children endured are disturbing, but more disturbing is the story of how the governments and agencies that set out to care for them eventually became the children’s tormenters.

Book Vietnam s Children in a Changing World

Download or read book Vietnam s Children in a Changing World written by Rachel Burr and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-24 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the majority of children living in the global South today, a large number of Vietnamese youths work to help support their families. International human rights organizations have focused on these children, seeking to bring their lives into line with an understanding of childhood that is generally accepted in the developed world. In this ethnographic study, Rachel Burr draws on her daily observations of working children in Hanoi and argues that these youngsters are misunderstood by the majority of agencies that seek to help them. Most aid programs embrace a model of childhood that is based on Western notions of individualism and bountiful resources. They further assume that this model is universally applicable even in cultures that advocate a collective sense of self and in countries that do not share the same economic advantages. Burr presents the voices and experiences of Vietnamese children in the streets, in a reform school, and in an orphanage to show that workable solutions have become lost within the rhetoric propagated by aid organizations. The reality of providing primary education or adequate healthcare for all children, for instance, does not stand a chance of being achieved until adequate resources are put in place. Yet, organizations preoccupied with the child rights agenda are failing to acknowledge the distorted global distribution of wealth in favor of Western nations. Offering a unique, firsthand look at the experiences of children in contemporary Vietnam, this book also provides a broad analysis of how internationally led human rights agendas are often received at the local level.
