Book Vietnam Photographs from North Carolina Veterans The Memories They Brought Home

Download or read book Vietnam Photographs from North Carolina Veterans The Memories They Brought Home written by Martin Tucker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When American soldiers returned home from Vietnam, most put their memories away. Decades later, North Carolina veterans contributed thousands of dusty and faded personal photographs to what started as a class project at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem. It evolved into a national traveling exhibition and then a permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of History called "A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans." For many of these men and women, this was their first opportunity to show what they couldn't say. Photographer and Vietnam-era vet Martin Tucker presents selected glimpses of those unforgettable experiences.

Book excerpt: For 50 years, civilians have avoided hearing about the controversial experiences of Vietnam veterans, many of whom suffer through post-traumatic stress alone. Through interviews conducted with 17 soldiers, this book shares the stories of those who have been silenced. These men and women tell us about life before and after the war. They candidly share stories of 40-plus years lived on the "edge of the knife" and many wonder what their lives would be like if they had come home to praise and parades. They offer their tragedies and successes to newer veterans as choices to be made or rejected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Were Soldiers showcases the inspiring true stories of 49 Vietnam veterans who returned home from the "lost war" to enrich America's present and future. In this groundbreaking new book, Joseph L. Galloway, distinguished war correspondent and New York Times bestselling author of We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young, and Marvin J. Wolf, Vietnam veteran and award-winning author, reveal the private lives of those who returned from Vietnam to make astonishing contributions in science, medicine, business, and other arenas, and change America for the better. For decades, the soldiers who served in Vietnam were shunned by the American public and ignored by their government. Many were vilified or had their struggles to reintegrate into society magnified by distorted depictions of veterans as dangerous or demented. Even today, Vietnam veterans have not received their due. Until now. These profiles are touching and courageous, and often startling. They include veterans both known and unknown, including: Frederick Wallace (“Fred”) Smith, CEO and founder of FedEx Marshall Carter, chairman of the New York Stock Exchange Justice Eileen Moore, appellate judge who also serves as a mentor in California's Combat Veterans Court Richard Armitage, former deputy secretary of state under Colin Powell Guion “Guy” Bluford Jr., first African American in space Engrossing, moving, and eye-opening, They Were Soldiers is a magnificent tribute that gives long overdue honor and recognition to the soldiers of this "forgotten generation."

Book Vietnam War Portraits

Download or read book Vietnam War Portraits written by Thomas Sanders and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume honors those who experienced the Vietnam War through striking portraits and personal accounts of the conflict and its repercussions. This book offers a uniquely human perspective on the Vietnam War through portraits and stories of American veterans, southern Vietnamese veterans, and civilians. The surreal imagery of Thomas Sanders’ photography encourages the viewer to take a closer look at those who experienced the war. These images are paired with the individuals’ haunting, inspirational, and sometimes comical stories of the war. Set in a surreal jungle environment, the portraits evoke the sense of darkness and uncertainty felt by those who experienced the war. Some portrait subjects hold objects that evoke their time of service: the common cigarette pack smoked by the vets while in the jungle; a homemade grenade made by the northern Vietnamese; and the “order to report” document that changed many a life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The individual stories of Veterans tell us a lot about war. Collective stories tell us what happened, but the individual story gets into the trenches - we read of feelings, actions, fears, worries, and personal accomplishments. The Vietnam War was the war of my generation. I think the least we owe the veterans is the opportunity to tell their story. And we must listen. We owe them that.

Book Living with War portraits

Download or read book Living with War portraits written by Judith Joy Ross and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the photographs by Judith Joy Ross the person is caught in his time and historic dimension. Living With War contains three groups of portraits of American citizens in relation to USA war missions during the past 30 years. The most recent pictures present people who demonstrated in 2006/07 against USA involvement in the war in Iraq. They are accompanied by shots made more than 15 years earlier of soldiers who were photographed shortly before their initial deployment in the first Gulf war. The third group of photos is from 1983/84 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It shows individual portraits of visitors paying tribute to the victims of war in Southeast Asia. These close shots dont take sides with any particular political orientation. They simply tell how irreplaceable the individual is and how keeping his memory serves as the basis of human interaction. Judith Joy Ross, born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, in 1946, studied photography at the Chicago Art Institute. She has received several awards and prizes, including the Charles Pratt Memorial Award, an Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Ms. Ross lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Book Practicing Oral History with Military and War Veterans

Download or read book Practicing Oral History with Military and War Veterans written by Sharon D. Raynor and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing Oral History with Military and War Veterans focuses predominantly on conducting oral history with men and women of recent wars and military conflicts. The book provides a structured methodology for building interest and trust among veterans to conduct interviews, design oral history projects, and archive and use these oral history interviews. It includes background on the evolution of veterans oral history, the nuts and bolts of interviewing, ethical guidelines, procedures, and the overall value of veterans oral history. The methodology emphasizes how memory evolves over the years - when a veteran becomes more distant from the events of war, the experiences become individualized and personalized for each veteran based on location, time, place, and purpose of their service. The book also aims to improve understanding of the personal, ethical, and psychological issues involved in listening compassionately to veterans’ stories that may contain issues of trauma, gender, socio-economics, race, dis/ability, and ethnicity. Practicing Oral History with Military and War Veterans is an invitation to community scholars, students, oral historians, and families of veterans to actively participate in the oral history process and to embrace methodology that may help with designing and conducting oral history projects and interviewing war veterans.
