Book Economic Transition in Vietnam

Download or read book Economic Transition in Vietnam written by Melanie Beresford and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title aims to provide a detailed and thorough account of how Vietnam's dependance on Soviet aid during the 1960s and 1970s sustained, and yet ultimately undermined, the centrally-planned economy. Foreign aid provided most of the resources which, in the context of an under-developed agrarian economy, permitted planned industrialization. However, chronic shortages emerged, encouraging individuals and enterprises to divert resources to local uses. This book outlines the many problems facing Virtnam, not least how new global forms of integration are affecting future development.

Economic growth was recorded at 8–9 percent during 1992–94, rising to a 91⁄2 percent annual rate in 1995 and the first half of 1996. Investment has been rising steadily over the past few years, owing in part to foreign investment, which increased to 9 percent of GDP in 1995 and continued to rise strongly in 1996. Vietnam’s foreign trade has also expanded and diversified rapidly, with both imports and exports growing at double-digit annual rates.

Book The Vietnamese Economy and Its Transformation to an Open Market System

Download or read book The Vietnamese Economy and Its Transformation to an Open Market System written by William T. Alpert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These previously unpublished papers by leading American and Vietnamese economists analyze the dramatic transformation of Vietnam's economy during the 1990s and its prospects for the future. The three main sections of the book discuss Vietnam's turbulent history, recent economic reforms, and the country's emerging role in the world economy and geopolitics. The contributors examine a myriad of issues, including specific reforms in agriculture, banking, and tax policy, as well as the attempts to create a business-oriented legal infrastructure, the development of foreign trade and a viable balance of payments, and U.S. policy reactions to Vietnam's rapid development in the last decade.

Book Trade Reform in Vietnam

Download or read book Trade Reform in Vietnam written by Philippe Auffret and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986 Vietnam initiated a transition from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented economy where the government would keep playing a leading role. These renovation (doi moi) policies were successful at generating economic growth and reducing poverty. In the ten-year socioeconomic strategy endorsed by the Ninth Party Congress in April 2001, the authorities further articulated their development objectives in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction. To reach these objectives, the government indicated that its structural reform priorities were to change Vietnam's trade and financial policies, liberalize the climate for private investment, increase the efficiency of public enterprises, and improve governance. The author argues that the pace of implementation of trade reform-which has been impressive so far-is raising new challenges. On one side, fast liberalization of trade reform may soon conflict with the slow pace of implementation of other reforms, including restructuring of state-owned enterprises and state-owned commercial banks. On the other side, Vietnam would greatly benefit from fast implementation of trade reform and particularly fast accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), especially after China's recent WTO accession. Auffret concludes that implementation of trade reform will be a testing ground to reveal the extent of Vietnam's commitment to a market-oriented economy.

Book AFTA s Impact on Vietnam

Download or read book AFTA s Impact on Vietnam written by Nima Pouyan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 1,3, King s College London, course: The Business Environment in the Asia-Pacific, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This book analyses and evaluates the question, in how far the creation of the Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA) brought economic benefits to the ASEAN country Vietnam. To evaluate this question the impacts of AFTA on Vietnam's trade and their foreign direct investment (FDI) are evaluated and in a further step the question analysed in how far AFTA can affect the government income revenues of Vietnam. For the analysis of AFTA's impact on Vietnams' trade, the trade structure of Vietnam will be analysed. In general it can be said that for Vietnam the accession to AFTA is a very important step in their transition process to a more market economy. Furthermore it is a major step in Vietnams' integration in the world economy. Especially the access of Vietnamese firms to a huge market such as ASEAN seems to be very advantageous. In the case of foreign direct investments, the question is if AFTA is seen by foreign firms and investors as a positive factor which would lead to investments in Vietnam or if it does not change the situation or if it has even a negative impact on the FDI due to the reason that the industries are not protected anymore by the tariffs and quotas. A further question to analyse is the origin of the FDI, this means if the major part comes from the ASEAN countries or if it has also any effects on other countries. This book primarily targets researchers and readers interested in organisations and the Vietnamese economy.

Book Vietnam China Agricultural Trade

Download or read book Vietnam China Agricultural Trade written by Le Hai Binh and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural products are one of Vietnam’s most important exports, contributing considerably to the overall export turnover of the country. Vietnam’s agricultural exports are easily affected by external factors. It is overly dependent on the Chinese market, and its agricultural products do not as yet meet strict global standards. Challenges facing Vietnam’s export of fruits and vegetables to the Chinese market include technical barriers, long risk assessment periods, restrictions on products exported through official quotas to the Chinese market, and frequent changes in China’s policy on border crossings. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of market diversification to this sector. To further develop its agricultural export sector, Vietnam needs to gather and consolidate information on import standards and guide its farmers on product quality requirements. Besides, efforts to gradually diversify its markets are essential for it to avoid being dependent on a small number of partners and markets. Vietnam’s participation in international organizations such as ASEAN, APEC, WTO, and AEC exemplifies its increasingly active efforts at seeking new development opportunities. The seventeen bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements which have been signed by Vietnam partly demonstrates efforts at achieving market diversification.
