Book Viennese Types

  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Viennese Types written by Emil Mayer and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces one of the great photographers of our century, Emil Mayer, a turn-of-the-century Viennese street photographer whose prints were largely destroyed by the Gestapo after his suicide in 1938 Viennese Types is Mayer's surviving masterwork, a recently discovered portfolio of original prints that is published here for the first time. It is by any measure one of the most extraordinary collections in the literature of photography -- lyrical, meditative, and deeply moving. Rudolf Arnheim, in the foreword to the book, calls Mayer 'an intimate master.' Others have compared his work to that of Henri Cartier-Bresson. But as Mayer's photographs were taken in the early years of the century, long before those of Cartier-Bresson and other street photographers, this collection is like nothing ever seen before: it is a window on a vanished age, seen through modern eyes. Designed by Carl Zahn, this is a book of truly exquisite beauty.

Book The Viennese Ballroom in the Age of Beethoven

Download or read book The Viennese Ballroom in the Age of Beethoven written by Erica Buurman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The repertoire of the early Viennese ballroom was highly influential in the broader histories of both social dance and music in nineteenth-century Europe. Yet music scholarship has traditionally paid little attention to ballroom dance music before the era of the Strauss dynasty, with the exception of a handful of dances by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. This book positions Viennese social dances in their specific performing contexts and investigates the wider repertoire of the Viennese ballroom in the decades around 1800, most of which stems from dozens of non-canonical composers. Close examination of this material yields new insights into the social contexts associated with familiar dance types, and reveals that the ballroom repertoire of this period connected with virtually every aspect of Viennese musical life, from opera and concert music to the emerging category of entertainment music that was later exemplified by the waltzes of Lanner and Strauss.

Book The Viennese Minor Key Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Mozart

Download or read book The Viennese Minor Key Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Mozart written by Matthew Riley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late eighteenth-century Vienna and the surrounding Habsburg territories, over 50 minor-key symphonies by at least 11 composers were written. These include some of the best-known works of the symphonic repertoire, such as Haydn's 'Farewell' Symphony and Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550. The driving energy, intense pathos and restlessness of these compositions demand close attention and participation from the listener, and pose urgent questions about meaning and interpretation. In response to these questions, The Viennese Minor-Key Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Mozart combines historical perspectives with recent developments in music analysis to shed new light on this distinctive part of the repertoire. Through an intertextual, analytical approach, author Matthew Riley treats the minor-key symphony as a subgenre of several strands, reconstructing the compositional world it occupied. His work enables signals to be understood, puts characteristic strategies in clear relief, and ultimately reveals the significance this music held for both composers and listeners of the time. Riley gives us a fresh picture of the familiar masterpieces of Haydn and Mozart, while also focusing on lesser known composers.

Book Vienna Lager

  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book Vienna Lager written by Andreas Krennmair and published by Andreas Krennmair. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vienna Lager is an outstanding example of a revolution in beer brewing that started in the 1830s. When Austrian brewer Anton Dreher travelled to England and Scotland, he learned about British brewing technology that was mostly unknown in Continental Europe at the time. With this knowledge and a lager yeast sample from his friend and travel companion Gabriel Sedlmayr from Munich, he founded a brewing empire that started a revolution of pale, cold-fermented beer across Europe and the world. Thanks to Vienna Lager's popularity in the United States during the 19th and 20th century, it survived even when it had fallen out of fashion in its country of origin and became a classic style that is still brewed and reinterpreted by brewers around the world. The book not only tells the story of this beer type in great detail and dispels many myths around it, it also explains - based on historic sources - which ingredients were used to brew the beer, what the brewing process was like, and what the beer looked and tasted like. The book also comes with a number of recipes that explain how home-brewers can recreate both authentic, historic examples and modern versions of Vienna Lager at home.

Book The Jews of Nazi Vienna 1938 1945

Download or read book The Jews of Nazi Vienna 1938 1945 written by Ilana Fritz Offenberger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Jewish life in Vienna just after the Nazi-takeover in 1938. Who were Vienna’s Jews, how did they react and respond to Nazism, and why? Drawing upon the voices of the individuals and families who lived during this time, together with new archival documentation, Ilana Offenberger reconstructs the daily lives of Vienna’s Jews from Anschluss in March 1938 through the entire Nazi occupation and the eventual dissolution of the Jewish community of Vienna. Offenberger explains how and why over two-thirds of the Jewish community emigrated from the country, while one-third remained trapped. A vivid picture emerges of the co-dependent relationship this community developed with their German masters, and the false hope they maintained until the bitter end. The Germans murdered close to one third of Vienna’s Jewish population in the “final solution” and their family members who escaped the Reich before 1941 chose never to return; they remained dispersed across the world. This is not a triumphant history. Although the overwhelming majority survived the Holocaust, the Jewish community that once existed was destroyed.

Book The Vienna Circle and the Lvov Warsaw School

Download or read book The Vienna Circle and the Lvov Warsaw School written by A. Szaniawski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of an international symposium, organized in September 1986 by the Austrian Cultural Institute in Warsaw in cooperation with the Polish Philosophical Society. The topic was: The Vienna Circle and the Lvov-Warsaw School. Since the two phil osophical trends existed in roughly the same time and were close ly related, it was one of the purposes of the symposium to investigate both similarities and thp differences. Some thirty people took part in the symposium, nearly twenty contributions were presented and extensively discussed. The sym posium owed much to the excellent organization and warm hospital ity shown by Dr Georg Jankovic, the Director of the Austrian In stitute. As the person in charge of the scientific programme of the symposium, I take pleasure to acknowledge this debt. It so happened that a month later another symposium of a similar character was held. It took place in the University of Manchester, on the occasion of the centenary of the births of Stanislaw Lesniewski, Tadeusz Kotarbiflski and Wladyslaw Tatarkie wicz. Some papers read at the Manchester symposium form a part of the present volume. It was not possible, for technical reasons (the time factor was one of them), to include in this book all the material from the two symposia. Certain contributions have appeared elsewhere (for instance, K. Szaniawski's 'Ajdukiewicz on Non-Deductive Inference' was published in Danish Yearbook of Philosophy, Vol. 23). On the other hand, certain papers have been written special ly for this volume.

Book The Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart s Vienna

Download or read book The Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart s Vienna written by Mary Hunter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart's comic operas are among the masterworks of Western civilization, and yet the musical environment in which Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte wrote these now-popular operas has received little critical attention. In this richly detailed book, Mary Hunter offers a sweeping, synthetic view of opera buffa in the lively theatrical world of late-eighteenth-century Vienna. Opera buffa (Italian-language comic opera) persistently entertained audiences at a time when Joseph was striving for a German national theater. Hunter attributes opera buffa's success to its ability to provide "sheer" pleasure and hence explores how the genre functioned as entertainment. She argues that opera buffa, like mainstream film today, projects a social world both recognizable and distinct from reality. It raises important issues while containing them in the "merely entertaining" frame of the occasion, as well as presenting them as a series of easily identifiable dramatic and musical conventions. Exploring nearly eighty comic operas, Hunter shows how the arias and ensembles convey a multifaceted picture of the repertory's social values and habits. In a concluding chapter, she discusses Cos" fan tutte as a work profoundly concerned with the conventions of its repertory and with the larger idea of convention itself and reveals the ways Mozart and da Ponte pointedly converse with their immediate contemporaries.
