Download or read book Remote Sensing of Forest Environments written by Michael A. Wulder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing of Forest Environments: Concepts and Case Studies is an edited volume intended to provide readers with a state-of-the-art synopsis of the current methods and applied applications employed in remote sensing the world's forests. The contributing authors have sought to illustrate and deepen our understanding of remote sensing of forests, providing new insights and indicating opportunities that are created when forests and forest practices are considered in concert with the evolving paradigm of remote sensing science. Following background and methods sections, this book introduces a series of case studies that exemplify the ways in which remotely sensed data are operationally used, as an element of the decision-making process, and in the scientific study of forests. Remote Sensing of Forest Environments: Concepts and Case Studies is designed to meet the needs of a professional audience composed of both practitioners and researchers. This book is also suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in Forestry, Environmental Science, Geography, Engineering, and Computer Science.

Download or read book Farming with Nature written by Sara J. Scherr and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing body of evidence shows that agricultural landscapes can be managed not only to produce crops but also to support biodiversity and promote ecosystem health. Innovative farmers and scientists, as well as indigenous land managers, are developing diverse types of “ecoagriculture” landscapes to generate cobenefits for production, biodiversity, and local people. Farming with Nature offers a synthesis of the state of knowledge of key topics in ecoagriculture. The book is a unique collaboration among renowned agricultural and ecological scientists, leading field conservationists, and farm and community leaders to synthesize knowledge and experience across sectors. The book examines: the knowledge base for ecoagriculture as well as barriers, gaps, and opportunities for developing improved ecoagriculture systems what we have learned about managing landscapes to achieve multiple objectives at a landscape scale existing incentives for farmers, other land managers, and investors to develop and invest in ecoagriculture systems pathways to develop, implement, manage, and scale up successful ecoagriculture Insights are drawn from around the world, in tropical, Mediterranean, and temperate environments, from farming systems that range from highly commercialized to semi-subsistence. Farming with Nature is an important new work that can serve as a foundation document for planners, farm organizations, researchers, project developers, and policy makers to develop strategies for promoting and sustaining ecoagriculture landscapes. Replete with valuable best practice guidelines, it is a critical resource for both practitioners and researchers in the field.
Download or read book The Whitefly Bemisia tabaci Homoptera Aleyrodidae Interaction with Geminivirus Infected Host Plants written by Winston M.O. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a chronology of events of B. tabaci and geminiviruses, and an overview within the Caribbean and Latin America. The pathosystems involving Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, Cotton leaf curl virus and the cassava mosaic viruses are discussed. Data is presented on amino acid concentrations influencing B. tabaci and thus serves the basis for holidic diets. The essential molecular techniques for B. tabaci identification and classification are included with factors to consider for appropriate applications; an essential working guide for graduate students and researchers in the molecular field. Excellent photos portray symptoms of geminivirus-infecting crops: tomato, cotton, cassava, legumes and cucurbits; an important guide for researchers and growers. The novel insecticides, their mode of action and specificity; emphasize the applications of these within IPM programs.
Download or read book Correction of Line Interleaving Displacement in Frame Captured Aerial Video Imagery written by Bill Cooke and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientists with the USDA Forest Service are currently assessing the usefulness of aerial video imagery for various purposes including midcycle inventory updates. The potential of video image data for these purposes may be compromised by scan line interleaving displacement problems. Interleaving displacement problems cause features in video raster datasets to have jagged edges due to pixel offset on adjacent scan lines. Researchers at the Southern Forest Experiment Station, Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit (SO-FIA), have developed a computer program, "Pixshift," written in C, that shifts alternate raster lines (even or odd) to the right or left by a user-specified integer value. The program allows a maximum of four channels to be shifted simultaneously. Improvements in band-to-band registration and rectification to a map base have been observed, and classification improvements are expected."
