Book excerpt: The beginning of the twenty-first century has seen a resurgence of terrorist attacks on a scale previously unimaginable. In response, the Council of Europe has examined key areas in which it could contribute to the international community¿s efforts in the fight against terrorism and identified the protection of witnesses and collaborators of justice as one of its priorities. In order to combat terrorism, states often rely on the testimony of people who are closely connected to terrorist groups and who are more vulnerable than others to the use of intimidation against them or against people close to them. This may endanger the success of prosecutions often based on long and complicated investigations. Strengthening international co-operation in this field is also a useful means to ensure the protection of those persons whose protection would prove difficult on a merely national basis, given the conditions in the country where they are located. The Council of Europe has extensive experience in this area, based on existing European conventions and other standards. This publication contains the recently adopted standards in this field as well as a survey of national laws and practice in Council of Europe member and observer states together with an analytical report.

Book Practitioner Use of and Attitudes Toward Video conferencing for the Delivery of Evidence based Telemental Health Interventions

Download or read book Practitioner Use of and Attitudes Toward Video conferencing for the Delivery of Evidence based Telemental Health Interventions written by Kathryn Parisi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to telehealth delivery of interventions for physical health issues, the implementation of evidence-based psychosocial interventions using technology has less support. Video-conference delivery (VCD) has the potential to increase accessibility to effective treatments, although its use remains limited and understudied. This study employed a mixed methods approach in surveying mental health practitioners about their attitudes regarding the use of video-conference methods to deliver evidence-based interventions. One hundred and eleven practitioners were sampled from several national and regional practice organizations and administered quantitative surveys about their use of and attitudes towards VCD of evidence-based interventions. The relationship between clinician-level technology access, experience, and training with technology fluency and acceptability of using VCD was examined. A subset (n = 20) of respondents were then selected for qualitative interviews to further investigate accessibility, appropriateness, and feasibility of delivering evidence-based interventions via video conference. The results of this study have important implications for telemental health dissemination efforts which seek to extend services to underserved populations.

Book A Comparative Analysis of Corporate Fraud

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Corporate Fraud written by Sally Ramage and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comparative Analysis of Corporate Fraud: Book Four examines corporate fraud in the United Kingdom compared with that of two civil law neighbouring countries, France and Germany, as well as the United States. The objective of the study is to discover how fraud occurs, how the two different legal systems treat fraud, contributing factors, and if recommendations were made to authorities in an attempt to combat this illegal activity. The UK can learn much from the French legal system and the way France prosecutes corporations. Germany's Criminal Code is equally comprehensive in its prescriptive definitions of fraud, especially corporate fraud. Although the UK is striving for a general law against fraud, the UK Fraud Offence Bill is very inadequate, lacking detailed solutions. The UK has become entrenched in upholding legal privilege, bowing to intense lobbying by the legal profession. And the use of electronic evidence, vital in prosecuting modern corporate fraud, remains overlooked. The attitude toward corporate fraud in the UK remains laissez-faire. By analysing corporate fraud in the US, France, and Germany, author Sally Ramage highlights examples that the UK can take from these countries that combat corporate fraud without derogation of established international human rights.

Book Collisions in the Digital Paradigm

Download or read book Collisions in the Digital Paradigm written by David John Harvey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that the only asset that a lawyer has is time. But the reality is that a lawyer's greatest asset is information. The practice and the business of law is all about information exchange. The flow of information travels in a number of different directions during the life of a case. A client communicates certain facts to a lawyer. The lawyer assimilates those facts and seeks out specialised legal information which may be applicable to those facts. In the course of a generation there has been a technological revolution which represents a paradigm shift in the flow of information and communication. Collisions in the Digital Paradigm is about how the law deals with digital information technologies and some of the problems that arise when the law has to deal with issues arising in a new paradigm.
