Book Victory Celebrations Prisoners The Love Girl The Innocent

Download or read book Victory Celebrations Prisoners The Love Girl The Innocent written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1986-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1953, seventeen years before he received the Nobel Prize, Alexander Solzhenitsyn ended his term in the Ekibastuz labor camp with the play Victory Celebrations and seven of the twelve scenes of Prisoners committed to memory. During his ensuing internal exile, he completed Prisoners and started another play, The Love-Girl and the Innocent. The result is a dramatic trilogy focusing on events of the year 1945: the Russian army’s advance into East Prussia and the “repatriation” of former Russian prisoners of war to the Gulag labor camps. The three plays transmute Solzhenitsyn’s own bitter experience of war and imprisonment. In Victory Celebrations (translated by Helen Rapp and Nancy Thomas), one can recognize the author in Sergei Nerzhin, a captain in a Soviet artillery battalion whose staff improvises a banquet in a captured castle in East Prussia. Celebration turns to conflict when Nerzhin sides with Galina—a Russian emigree whose husband is fighting with the Germans—against Lieutenant Gridnev, an officer in military counter-intelligence who insists Galina is a spy. Prisoners (translated by Helen Rapp and Nancy Thomas, and based in part on Solzhenitsyn’s own initial arrest and captivity) follows a group of political prisoners, including ex-POWs, from their arrival in a Soviet prison on the Prussian border through their perfunctory interrogation, trial, and conviction. Solzhenitsyn’s alter-ego in The Love-Girl and the Innocent (translated by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg) is Rodion Nemov, a new prisoner in a labor camp whi is unwilling to compromise in order to survive. This final play in the trilogy is, as Martin Esslin wrote of the 1981 Royal Shakespeare Company production, “a classic portrayal of the Gulag.” These plays from the 1950s are among the Nobel laureate’s earlier writings. But in his indignation at injustice and moral bankruptcy, Solzhenitsyn the playwright prefigures Solzhenitsyn the great novelist.

Book excerpt: We believe the Lord is saying that now is the time to celebrate the victories that the Body of Christ will fulfill. This mission is for the Bride of Christ to believe the prophets and prophetic words that have been put forth, and to celebrate the victory of heaven before seeing the results. We believe that those who truly learn to joyfully celebrate what the Lord is going to do will experience an acceleration of victory and breakthrough. We believe that this book will be a pivotal prophetic declaration over our lives. We encourage you to dig deep into the heart of the Father and receive a revelation of victory in Jesus. 2 Chronicles 20:15 says, "Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God's." As we learn to submit ourselves to this faith-filled celebration of the unseen victory, we will experience God going before us and fighting our battles. When you fight for joy in the Holy Spirit, God fights for your prosperity.

Book excerpt: The eighth Canadian Battle Series volume is the little-told story of the tense final days of World War II, remembered in the Netherlands as “the sweetest of springs,” which saw the country’s liberation from German occupation. The Liberation Campaign, a series of fierce, desperate battles during the last three months of the war, was bittersweet. A nation’s freedom was won and the war concluded, but these final hostilities cost Canada 6,298 casualties, including 1,482 dead. With his trademark “you are there” style that draws upon official records, veteran memories, and a keen understanding of the combat experience, Mark Zuehlke brings to life this concluding chapter in the story of Canada in World War II. May 4, 2010, will mark the 65th anniversary of the Netherlands’ liberation.

Book Lighten Up The Life Changing Magic of Letting Go

Download or read book Lighten Up The Life Changing Magic of Letting Go written by Gaurav Garg and published by Gaurav Garg. This book was released on 2024-08-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First off, let me start by saying congratulations! By picking up this book, you've already taken the first step on an incredible journey. A journey that, I promise you, is more exciting than finding money in your old coat pocket and more rewarding than finally mastering the art of parallel parking. Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Another self-help book? Isn't this just going to tell me to do yoga, drink green smoothies, and journal my feelings?" Well, hold onto your skepticism, my friend, because this isn't your average, run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter guide to inner peace. This book is a rollercoaster ride through the landscape of human emotions - but don't worry, it's the kind of rollercoaster that's more exhilarating than terrifying, and you won't need a barf bag (though keep some tissues handy, because we might hit you in the feels a few times). What's In Store for You? In the pages that follow, we're going to embark on a grand adventure. We'll traverse the peaks of joy, wade through the valleys of sorrow, and navigate the winding paths of everything in between. Along the way, we'll: Explore the art of letting go (spoiler alert: it's not just about decluttering your closet) Learn how to embrace change without feeling like you're free-falling without a parachute Discover how to love yourself, flaws and all (yes, even that weird thing you do when you're nervous) Master the ninja-like skills of emotional resilience And ultimately, find a path to true emotional freedom (no, this doesn't mean you'll never feel sad again - we're aiming for freedom, not robotic indifference) Who is This Book For? This book is for you if: You've ever felt stuck, like you're running on a hamster wheel of emotions You find yourself replaying arguments in your head, coming up with perfect comebacks weeks too late Your emotional baggage is so heavy, you'd have to pay extra if emotions were airlines You want to feel more in control of your reactions, instead of feeling like a puppet to your feelings You're ready for a change, but the idea of change also makes you want to hide under your blanket You're curious about this whole "emotional freedom" thing, but you're pretty sure it's just for monks and people who do yoga at 5am In other words, this book is for humans. Imperfect, messy, beautiful humans who are doing their best to navigate this wild ride we call life. A Word of Warning Now, I feel it's my duty to warn you: this journey isn't always going to be easy. There will be moments when you'll want to throw this book across the room (please don't, unless you're reading the e-book version, in which case, throw away). There will be times when you'll face uncomfortable truths about yourself. You might cry. You might laugh. You might do both at the same time and worry about your sanity. But here's the thing: that's all part of the process. Growth isn't always comfortable, but it's always worth it. And I promise you, the view from the other side is spectacular. My Promise to You As we embark on this journey together, here's what I promise you: I will be honest with you, even when it's uncomfortable I will challenge you, but I will never leave you hanging I will share real, practical strategies that you can apply in your everyday life I will respect your intelligence and won't sugar-coat things I will do my best to make this journey not just enlightening, but also enjoyable (prepare for dad jokes and pop culture references) Are You Ready? So, dear reader, are you ready to embark on this adventure? Are you ready to laugh, to cry, to grow, and to discover a version of yourself that's freer and more authentically you than you ever thought possible?

Download or read book Overcome with Paschal Joy written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lent-Easter seasons cover one-fourth of the year, or 25 percent of the liturgical year. One of the many things we do as Roman Catholics is sing Lenten and Easter hymns. During Lent, we express our sorrow for sin as we pray, fast, and give alms. During Easter, we shout Alleluias at the end of many hymns to express our praise of God for having raised Christ from the dead. Thus, those who observe Lent and Easter sing religious hymns written for each season. The sounds of Lenten hymns in minor keys give way to Easter hymns in major ones. This book presents an exercise for every day of Lent and Easter that combines the daily Scripture texts from the Lectionary for Mass with religious hymns sung during Lent and Easter. It is designed to be used by individuals for private prayer or by families for public prayer. A six-part exercise is offered for every one of the 135 entries: (1) the liturgical day, (2) the daily Scripture texts, (3) a verse from a traditional hymn, (4) a reflection, (5) a question for personal meditation, and (6) a concluding prayer.

Book Collected Papers on Alexander the Great

Download or read book Collected Papers on Alexander the Great written by Ernst Badian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Ernst Badian (1925-2011) was one of the most influential Alexander historians of the twentieth century. His first articles on the subject appeared in 1958, and he continued for a full fifty years to reshape scholarly perception of the reign of Alexander the Great. A steady output of articles was reinforced by lectures and reviews in his own formidable style. Badian's earliest work transformed understanding of aspects of the Roman Republic, and he continued to work on that area throughout his career; but his series of studies of Alexander the Great (which he deliberately never summed up in a synoptic work) demolished the hero of his predecessors such as Droysen and Tarn, whom he regarded as starry-eyed hero-worshippers, and created an Alexander on the model of a twentieth-century tyrant. The Alexander who was a ruthless killer of his rivals and those who disagreed with him, a mass-murderer in his conquests, and perhaps even an incompetent imperialist, has superseded the Alexander whose mission it was to bring Greek civilization to the ends of the earth. These essays and articles provide a new layer in the interpretation of a figure who has not ceased to fascinate since his death in 323 BC. Many of these articles were published in out-of-the-way journals and conference volumes, and are brought together here for the first time in a collection which will provide student and scholar with a view of the full range of Badian's work on Alexander. Certain ephemeral pieces and all reviews except one have been excluded, by the wish of the author. The twenty-seven articles included were all revised by the author before his death, but there has been no other editorial intervention. The volume also includes a portrait, and an introduction by Eugene Borza surveying Badian's career and contribution. No one who works on Alexander the Great can afford to be without this book.

Download or read book Day Peace Broke Out written by Mike Brown and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 3 p.m. on 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a long-awaited speech in which he officially declared the war in Europe to be over. After six bitter years of conflict, however, perceptions of how victory over Nazism was to be celebrated and what post-war Britain should look like were very different from the visions of the people and the politicians in 1939. Illustrated with photographs, adverts, posters and cartoons, The Day the Peace Broke Out describes the VE-Day celebrations in Britain and across the world through the memories of those who were there, combined with contemporary newspaper and magazine articles. Mike Brown, an authority on the British Home Front of the Second World War, charts the nation's progressive change of heart from defeatism to growing confidence of certain victory. He looks at the immediate post-VE-Day period and the celebration of victory over Japan in August 1945. What should have been a story with a happy ending concludes with the harsh realisation of post-war austerity and the increasing disillusionment that led many Britons to conclude that they had won the war but lost the peace.
