The Tree of Gernika tells how Euzkadi, the democratic republic that the Basques created in their green homeland by the Bay of Biscay, fought for freedom and decency in an atrocious civil war. After a year of struggle, blockaded by sea, bombed from the air, fighting against overwhelming odds in their own hill, the Basques in the end lost to Franco's forces - but they lost honourably, without resorting to murder, torture and treachery.' His voyage was financed 75% by the King of Spain, Charles V, The Holy Roman Emperor, and 25% by Christopher de Haro, a Dutch businessman residing in Spain. The purpose of the trip by Magellan was not Gold, Glory and God, as is commonly believed. Rather, it was for better food, as the basic spices commonly available today, including pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and mace, were not available in Europe and had to be imported through Arab traders, making them outrageously expensive. Although most of the 237 men who embarked on the journey in 1519 died along the way, including Magellan himself who was killed in Cebu in the Philippines, one ship made it back in 1522 with 18 men and a cargo laden with spices, and the expedition earned a financial profit. After the death of Magellan, his remaining men divided into two groups. One group decided to go back to Europe the way that they had come, by crossing the Pacific Ocean. However, they never made it. The other group, led by Juan Sebastian Elcano, made it back to Spain with only one ship, but that ship had a cargo laden with valuable spices including cloves that had been acquired in the Spice Islands, with the result that the entire expedition earned a financial profit, which was the purpose of the expedition in the first place. Of 237 men who had left with Magellan on five ships three years earlier, only 18 were left on the only ship to return. However, not all of the others had died along the way. Some who had been captured by the Portuguese or who had been left behind on the Cape Verde Islands arrived later. A few others had voluntarily stayed behind, preferring the company of the easy women in the Philippines. At least two had been marooned on the coast of Brazil following an unsuccessful attempt at mutiny. There seems to be no record of what happened to those two. Although most of the original 237 were dead, many of them still have never been fully accounted for.

Book excerpt: In The Sleep of Behemoth, Jehangir Yezdi Malegam explores the emergence of conflicting concepts of peace in western Europe during the High Middle Ages. Ever since the early Church, Christian thinkers had conceived of their peace separate from the peace of the world, guarded by the sacraments and shared only grudgingly with powers and principalities. To kingdoms and communities they had allowed attenuated versions of this peace, modes of accommodation and domination that had tranquility as the goal. After 1000, reformers in the papal curia and monks and canons in the intellectual circles of northern France began to reimagine the Church as an engine of true peace, whose task it was eventually to absorb all peoples through progressive acts of revolutionary peacemaking. Peace as they envisioned it became a mandate for reform through conflict, coercion, and insurrection. And the pursuit of mere tranquility appeared dangerous, and even diabolical. As Malegam shows, within western Christendom’s major centers of intellectual activity and political thought, the clergy competed over the meaning and monopolization of the term "peace," contrasting it with what one canon lawyer called the "sleep of Behemoth," a diabolical "false" peace of lassitude and complacency, one that produced unsuitable forms of community and friendship that must be overturned at all costs. Out of this contest over the meaning and ownership of true peace, Malegam concludes, medieval thinkers developed theologies that shaped secular political theory in the later Middle Ages. The Sleep of Behemoth traces this radical experiment in redefining the meaning of peace from the papal courts of Rome and the schools of Laon, Liège, and Paris to its gradual spread across the continent and its impact on such developments as the rise of papal monarchism; the growth of urban, communal self-government; and the emergence of secular and mystical scholasticism.

Book excerpt: Sometime around 1190, King Alfonso VIII of Castile granted a royal charter to the community of Cuenca, a Castilian frontier town recently recaptured from the Muslims and resettled by Christians. The royal charter was in the form of a law code, or fuero. Fueros, which evolved from short lists of exceptions to standing royal directives into much more extensive commentaries on legal matters, were used as an incentive to Christian settlement on the frontier. Reflecting the complexities of administering a town that still had large Muslim and Jewish populations, the fuero or code of Cuenca was meant to assure the permanence of Christian conquest and settlement. James Powers provides the first translation into English of this notable historical document. The Code of Cuenca is of great importance to legal historians, particularly as a comparison to contemporary English and other European law texts. Because there is no similar urban compilation anywhere else in twelfth-century Europe that contains significant descriptions of everyday life in a medieval frontier town, the code will serve as a primary source for scholars and students of medieval Iberian and western European political, economic, and social history.
