Book excerpt: A Companion to the New Rifle Musket A Practical Guide to Squad and Setting-up Drill Soldiers and their weapons These two military instruction guides have been published together because they are the work of a common author, S. Bertram Browne, and because both concern aspects of the business of soldiering from the perspective of ordinary soldiers in the British Army of mid nineteenth century. The young Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and by the time the new Enfield Rifle Musket was introduced, some sixteen years later, her armies were engaged in colonial wars across the world and were on the verge of substantial conflicts in the Crimea and India. Their weapon was a .577 calibre muzzle loading 'Minie' rifle-musket of the type used by the British Army until 1867, when it was replaced by (or in many cases converted to) the cartridge-loading Snider Enfield rifle. The Enfield Rifle Musket was used by several armies and was notably employed in the Crimea and the New Zealand Wars by the British. Its particular notoriety arises from the Indian Mutiny, for it was this weapon-especially the method of loading it and the pig fat that allegedly protected the cartridge, thus defiling their caste-that has been cited as one of the principal causes of disaffection among the ranks of the Bengal Army, the outbreak of mutiny and its rapid spread. The Enfield Rifle Musket was also used in the American Civil War where, among others, Chamberlain's legendary 20th Maine were armed with it as they defended Little Round Top at Gettysburg. This 'companion' naturally explains to the reader everything about the gun's, use, care, construction and maintenance. The second guide in this volume contains a very interesting text best defined by its title and includes many diagrams which will be informative to the student of the period and instructive for re-enactors etc. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book excerpt: This project is a study of the changes in military technology and administration in Great Britain between 1855 and 1907. After a period of quiescence following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the major militaries of the world began transitioning away from ancien regimé muzzle-loading weapons, wooden sailing ships, and precision-drill tactics. England stubbornly lagged behind, however, until the Crimean War triggered an intense period of military technological development. For the next five decades, the nation struggled to understand and harness improvements in ordnance and small-arms, armor for ship and fortress defense, mechanization of materials production, and the myriad other changes brought about by the ongoing Industrial Revolution. The British public played a surprising but largely unexamined role in these changes, making thousands of suggestions for new weapons and other military material to the British War Office. The British ordnance committees charged with evaluating new ideas and inventions related to military hardware compiled their findings in annual Abstracts of Proceedings, published in bound format from 1857 to 1897. From these and other sources, I have built a database that allows the compilation of statistics on the number of inventors and projects brought before the War Office for consideration, as well as to provide an index to the various topics examined. In addition, I have drawn heavily on many online resources, including the British Newspaper Archive, House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, and texts available from Google Books and other sites. Using such information, the dissertation examines the British public’s interest and participation in weapons development during the second half of the nineteenth century. In addition, the project seeks to put such participation, along with ongoing changes in military administration, in the greater context of the political and financial considerations of the time, as well as Britain’s activities on the world stage. Ultimately, it argues that the Victorian era saw the convergence of three different social revolutions: the British governmental revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the European military revolution. This convergence produced a period of unprecedented public participation in the British weapons development process and fundamentally altered civil-military relationships in the Empire.

However, there is another side to the story: thousands of Catholics from across Europe (and beyond) volunteered to defend the pope from those who threatened his authority and his kingdom. These nineteenth century 'crusaders' included around 1,600 from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. This book focuses on the turbulent period between 1860 and 1870, which saw a Piedmontese invasion of the Papal States (1860), an attempted capture of Rome by Garibaldi (1867) and finally the newly formed Italian Army's attack of 1870, which left Rome as the kingdom's capital. It was also a time of reform and modernization in the pontifical army, with at times inspired leadership and the introduction of new weapons and technologies. In addition to examining the campaigns, the showpiece actions at Castelfidardo, Mentana and Porta Pia, and the political and religious context, Victorian Crusaders studies the backgrounds, motivations and experience of those who flocked to Rome from the British Isles. The Irish joined the Battalion of St Patrick in 1860 and others subsequently signed up for the Pontifical Zouaves, a glamorous transnational unit whose uniform was inspired by the warriors of the Algerian mountains. They came from varied backgrounds, including members of the aristocracy and future members of parliament, though most came from the middle classes. Most foreign recruits knew that the odds were heavily stacked against them, but they also understood the importance of standing up for their beliefs and the value, as they saw it, of sacrifice and martyrdom. Their experience provides a fascinating insight into Victorian society, large sections of which were proudly in favor of the Italian Risorgimento and often anti-Catholic in their sympathy. Indeed, for the Irish especially, joining the pontifical army was a way of scoring a point against the Protestant English and asserting their national aspirations. Based on contemporary accounts and archives, Victorian Crusaders for the first time studies the Catholic volunteer movement between 1860 and 1870 from a British and Irish perspective.
