Book Victoria s Blue Jackets Marines

Download or read book Victoria s Blue Jackets Marines written by W. H. G. Kingston and published by . This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vignettes from many engagements of the Victorian Royal Navy For many, the great age of sail, typified by Nelson and his Royal Navy was the finest hour of British sea power. In its struggle with Napoleonic France it fought its greatest battles, brought to ruin its greatest foe and finally did rule the waves. The issue, perhaps, for those interested in naval warfare is that a navy so dominant does not have great sea battles to fight. The British Empire now expanded quickly due in no small measure to this naval superiority. The Royal Navy was constantly employed, but now its role was the bombardment of troublesome coastal ports and batteries, the suppression of piracy and slavery, exploration and the provision of Naval Brigades and their big guns to fight on land alongside the British Army in the few major and many minor wars of the Queen Empress's long reign. So whilst sea battles like Trafalgar would not come again until Jutland, this was a period full of diversity that took sailors and marines all over the globe in the service of the Empire. We join them in a host of engagements within this book's pages-bombarding the Syrian coast, with Rajah Brooke in Borneo, to Burma, through the Crimea, with the Shannon Brigade in the Indian Mutiny, to polar wastes and afoot in Ashanti, Egypt, against the Mahdi in the Sudan, in collision with the Zulus, the Boers and the Chinese Boxers among many others. This is a fascinating overview of more than half a century of naval warfare as it entered the modern age.

Book The Victoria Cross at Sea

Download or read book The Victoria Cross at Sea written by John Winton and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naval VCs have been won in places as far apart in time and distance as the Baltic in 1854 and Japan in 1945, in the trenches from the Crimea to the Western Front, in harbours from Dar es Salaam to Zeebrugge, from the Barents to the Java Sea, from New Zealand to the North Atlantic, and from China to the Channel. They have been won in battleships and trawlers, in submarines below the water and aircraft above it, on horseback and on foot.Age and rank meant nothing. Boy Cornwall was not seventeen at Jutland, and Frederick Parslow was in his sixtieth year when he earned his VC on board a horse transport ship. William Hall was the son of a freed slave; Charles Lucas, awarded the Royal Navys first VC, became a Rear Admiral. Neither were all the recipients of Britains highest gallantry decoration British, and men from Canada, Australia and New Zealand were included in those whose actions were recognised by the awarding of the VC. Yet every one of them had one thing in common uncommon valour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1874, Jack Gowlland RN, newly promoted to the rank of Commander, and his sister Celia left England to travel across the Continent to Brindisi. From there they sailed via the newly opened Suez Canal to Australia. Celia never returned to England. Jack drowned surveying Sydney Harbour within months of his return to his post as head of the New South Wales Hydrographical Survey, and Celia married one of his closest friends within a year. Spanning twelve years, the letters to Celia - Birdie - that form this volume are from Celia's favourite brother, Richard, and his wife Jessie. They tell not only of family life in Victorian England - the vicissitudes of child bearing, unwelcome guests, making ends meet on a meagre income - but also bring to life some of the broader social changes taking place during the period. By 1874 Richard, an outstanding Civil Servant who rose to be deputy head of his department before his early death, was working in the Office of Public Building and Works. His articulate and engaging letters paint a vivid picture of his courtship and marriage to Jessie, and the birth and childhood of their six children, and refer also to his work, where he was involved with the planning of some of London's Victorian landmarks.
