Download or read book Neo Baroque written by Omar Calabrese and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading young Italian semiologist scrutinizes today's cultural phenomena and finds the prevailing taste to be "neo-baroque"--characterized by an appetite for virtuosity, frantic rhythms, instability, poly-dimensionality, and change. Omar Calabrese locates a "sign of the times" in an amazing variety of literary, philosophical, artistic, musical, and architectural forms, from the Venice Biennale through the "new science" to television series, video games, and "zapping" with the remote control device from channel to channel! Calabrese admits that he begins the book with a refusal to distinguish between "Donald Duck and Dante." Avoiding hierarchies or ghettos among works, he takes his readers on a fast-paced expedition through contemporary culture that closes with an elegant essay on evaluation and classical form. According to Calabrese, the enormous quantity of narrative now being produced has led to a new situation: everything has already been said, and everything has already been written. The only way of avoiding saturation has been to turn to a poetics of repetition. The author shows that pleasure in texts is now produced by tiny variations, and a certain kind of citation from other works has taken on a central importance that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. In describing this development, and others shared by both avant-garde and mass media, he makes us aware of the rapid shrinkage in the once ample space between "highbrow" and "lowbrow." Download or read book The Law of Mentalism written by A. Victor Segno and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1902 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book explains the mental phenomena that comprise mentalism, which is a discipline which encompasses aspects of hypnosis, mental science, telepathy and other occurrences. In twenty chapters, A. Victor Segno conducts an investigation of the major constituents of mentalist thought. Mastery of these different forms, which the author defines as manifestations of thought or etheric energy, will lead to mastery over the mind and its functions. Control of such faculties is established by being in harmony with subtle frequencies - mental vibrations - that govern the mind's ability to operate and perform such feats. Segno describes various mental phenomena and emotional states, ranging from the experience of dreams to the honing of concentrative powers. The relation of these to successful expression of telepathic intuition or magnetic healing is described, while the subtle influence of mentalism on the development of individual personalities and destinies is explained. The physical and mental qualities of a person are molded, summed up with the phrase: "As is the mind, so is the form."

Download or read book The Law of Mentalism Life in the Great Beyond written by A. Victor Segno and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law of Mentalism + Bonus Book ~ Life in the Great Beyond by A. Victor Segno. Originally published in 1902. Mentalism or thought-force, as it manifests itself in the human brain, is the highest known type of power, the mysteries of which have been called nature, life, spirit, soul - and even God. The power and principles of the Law of Mentalism are as old as humanity, having existed ever since man was created. In different ages of the world's progress, men have, in some measure, realized the existence of the Law, but heretofore, man has been unable to grasp it, with any degree of completeness. He has, however, from time to time, discovered a few of its mysteries.... My object in teaching this science to the world is to make men and women individuals - to make them gods in mental, moral, spiritual and physical strength. ~ A. Victor Segno ~ Edited by Rev. Lux Newman. This is not a scanned-in copy of a pdf. It's a real text book, nicely designed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized chronologically, this volume analyzes the dynamics, convergences, and ideological clashes that have given life to the most significant movements of the twentieth century and today to the season of recent phantasmagoric buildings of the so-called Star System. Illuminating and insightful, the volume is a much needed guide for students, educators, or anyone interested in architecture. Written as if it were a novel, in clear and compelling way, The History of Architecture from 1900 until Today examines the main buildings that were designed in more than 120 years of history, those famous and appreciated unanimously by critics, and those that, although of great value, were neglected for ideological reasons. Read in its contradictions, architecture becomes a fresco that tells us about our complicated history, our multiple tensions, our filled and unfulfilled desires.
