Book excerpt: Bullying involves an act of physical or psychological persecution carried out by one student (or group of students) against another student, who is chosen as a victim of repeated attacks. This book focuses on risk factors of victimisation, intervention strategies, and socioemotional outcomes for victims. Victimisation is a phenomenon that appears in different settings, and includes several dimensions that also differ with the type of victim and their specificities. Certain populations have some heightened vulnerability, which exposes them more to the experience of victimisation situations. The first chapter of this book studies predictors and outcomes for victims of school bullying. The second chapter focuses on analysing the problem of bullying, an issue that is currently of great concern to parents, teachers, students, the educational community, and also social scientists, governments, and administrations. The third chapter examines polyvictimisation, defined as children's experience of multiple forms of victimisation. Chapter four presents an overview as to the function of friendship in childhood before discussing evidence that suggests for some children, friendship can serve to protect against the experience of victimisation, and alleviate symptoms associated with peer-victimisation.
