Book excerpt: Structural vibrations have become the critical factor limiting the performance of many engineering systems, typical amplitudes ranging from meters to a few nanometers. Many acoustic nuisances in transportation systems and residential and office buildings are also related to structural vibrations. The active control of such vibrations involves nine orders of magnitude of vibration amplitude, which exerts a profound influence on the technology. Active vibration control is highly multidisciplinary, involving structural vibration, acoustics, signal processing, materials science, and actuator and sensor technology. Chapters 1-3 of this book provide a state-of-the-art introduction to active vibration control, active sound control, and active vibroacoustic control, respectively. Chapter 4 discusses actuator/sensor placement, Chapter 5 deals with robust control of vibrating structures, Chapter 6 discusses finite element modelling of piezoelectric continua and Chapter 7 addresses the latest trends in piezoelectric multiple-degree-of-freedom actuators/sensors. Chapters 8-12 deal with example applications, including semi-active joints, active isolation and health monitoring. Book excerpt: The IUT AM / IFToMM Symposium on Synthesis of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, held in Riga, Latvia, 24-28 August 1998, was one of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the theory and application of methods of nonlinear dynamics in mechanics. The symposium follows eighteen symposia on Analysis and Synthesis of Nonlinear Mechanical Oscillatory Systems held at Riga Technical University from 1971 to 1991 and in 1996 (prof. E. Lavendelis and Prof. M. Zakrzhevsky). Early in the late fifties and sixties Prof. J. G. Panovko organised several successful conferences in Riga on Nonlinear Oscillations. The participants in all these conferences and symposia (except 1996) were only from the ex-Soviet Union. This symposium, organised by the Institute of Mechanics of Riga Technical University, brought together scientists active in different fields of nonlinear dynamics. Selected scientists from 14 countries represented a wide range of expertise in' mechanics, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented towards application of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics and nonlinear oscillations. The goal of the symposium was to stimulate development of the theory of strongly nonlinear dynamical systems and its new applications in the fields of applied mechanics, engineering and other branches of science and technology.

It was held at the University of Cassino, Italy, from 11 to 13 May 2000. The Symposium was devoted mainly to the technical aspects of historical developments and therefore it has been addressed mainly to the IFToMM Community. In fact, most the authors of the contributed papers are experts in TMM and related topics. This has been, indeed, a challenge: convincing technical experts to go further in-depth into the background of their topics of expertise. We have received a very positive response, as can be seen by the fact that these Proceedings contain contributions by authors from all around the world. We received about 50 papers, and after review about 40 papers were accepted for both presentation and publishing in the Proceedings. This means also that the History of TMM is of interest everywhere and, indeed, an in-depth knowledge of the past can be of great help in working on the present and in shaping the future with new ideas. I believe that a reader will take advantage of the papers in these Proceedings with further satisfaction and motivation for her or his work (historical or not). These papers cover the wide field of the History of Mechanical Engineering and particularly the History of TMM.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear structural dynamic systems which are multi-degree of freedom systems involve, for instance, matrix dynamic equilibrium equations, which can be of various order up to very high order. In these equations, the nonlinear quantities can be dependent on time and other terms, such as scalar variables, which are dependent on time. Frequency response and response time derivatives would also, of course, be involved. Nonlinear terms can account for dissipative phenomena and can be due to other physical phenomena. In fact, many engineering structures involve time-dependent properties such as, stiffness elements of specific structural components which can change according to the stress level. Other examples of dynamic elements of nonlinear structural systems can include system mass and damping distribution elements which evolve with time, such as railway or highway bridges and other structures, which interact with external agencies generating the system motion (for example, trains, a queue of vehicles, or other external agencies.) This volume is a rather comprehensive treatment of many of the techniques and methods which are utilized for the analysis of nonlinear structural dynamic systems.
