Book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells with Elastic Restraints

Download or read book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells with Elastic Restraints written by Aviv Rosen and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear theory is derived for calculation of the influence of elastic edge restraints, on the vibrations and buckling of stiffened cylindrical shells. The stiffeners are considered 'smeared' and the edge restraints can be axial, radial, circumferential or rotational. Extensive computations are performed for special kinds of stringer-stiffened shells, and the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results. A method of definition of equivalent elastically restrained boundary conditions by use of vibration tests is discussed. Application of this technique to tests on 10 shells significantly reduces the scatter in the ratio of experimental to predicted buckling loads.

Book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Part I Theoretical Analysis

Download or read book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Part I Theoretical Analysis written by Josef Singer and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of analysis and a computer program were developed for determination of the frequencies and mode shapes of the free vibrations of stiffened cylindrical shells. The shells are stiffened by closely spaced stringers and rings, have different boundary conditions, and are subjected to either a static axial load or a hydrostatic pressure. The stiffeners are considered 'smeared' over the shell. The system of equations which was obtained is solved by a method known as the 'exact method'. The theoretical investigation includes a study of the variation in frequencies and mode shapes with increase in the static load until buckling. The results of the present analysis are compared to those of other methods which appear in the literature, and good agreement is obtained. (Author).

Book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Part Ii Experimental Analysis

Download or read book Vibrations of Axially Loaded Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Part Ii Experimental Analysis written by Aviv ROSEN and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To complement a parallel theoretical analysis experiments were conducted on seven different clamped cylindrical aluminum shells: one isotropic shell, four shells stiffened by external stringers, and two strengthened by external rings. In all the experiments smooth experimental curves of frequency versus axial load were obtained for different modes of vibration. The agreement between the experimental and the corresponding theoretical curves is good, but in most of the cases the experimental frequencies were slightly lower than the theoretical ones. As in previous experiments, experimental buckling loads were lower than the calculated ones. A possibility of nondestructive determination of the buckling load, by means of vibrations measurements was considered. (Modified author abstract).

Download or read book New Approaches to Structural Mechanics Shells and Biological Structures written by Horace R. Drew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift marks the retirement of Professor Chris Calladine, FRS after 42 years on the teaching staff of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. It contains a series of papers contributed by his former students, colleagues, and friends. Chris Calladine's research has ranged very widely across the field of struc tural mechanics, with a particular focus on the plastic deformation of solids and structures, and the behaviour of thin-shell structures. His insightful books on Engineering Plasticity and Theory of Shell Structures have been appreciated by many generations of students at Cambridge and elsewhere. His scientific contri bution outside engineering, in molecular structures, is at least as significant, and he is unique among engineers in having co-authored a book on DNA. Also, he has been keenly interested in the research of many students and colleagues, and on many occasions his quick grasp and physical insight have helped a student, and sometimes a colleague, find the nub of the problem without unnecessary effort. Many of the papers contained in this volume gratefully acknowledge this generous contribution. We thank Professor G. M. l. Gladwell for reading through all of the contri butions, Mrs R. Baxter and Mrs o. Constantinides for help in preparing this volume, Godfrey Argent Studio for permission to reproduce Calladine's por trait for the Royal Society, and Dr A. Schouwenburg -from Kluwer- for his assistance. Horace R. Drew Sergio Pellegrino ix CHRIS CALLADINE SOME THOUGHTS ON RESEARCH c. R.

Book Buckling of Structures

Download or read book Buckling of Structures written by I. Elishakoff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers, written by friends and colleagues of Josef Singer, presents a comprehensive and timely review of the theoretical mechanics of thin shell-structures. Topics of great current interest such as the buckling of composite plates and shells, the plastic buckling of thin-walled structures and the optimum design of buckling sensitive curved composite panels are examined by experts, using a great diversity of approaches, whereby theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results whenever possible.Other topics reviewed include the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of imperfect shells under different external static or dynamic loads and a variety of boundary conditions. Papers dealing with the vibration and the dynamic response of thin elastic bodies are also presented.A strong emphasis is made on the practical applications aspect in the theories presented. Thus engineers, research workers and students who are involved with the design and analysis of shell structures made of different materials, and subjected to various static and dynamic loads will find this volume an invaluable source of reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin shells are very popular structures in many different branches of engineering. There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of·the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".
