Book Gas phase Molecular Dynamics

Download or read book Gas phase Molecular Dynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is the understanding of elementary chemical and physical processes important in the combustion of fossil fuels. Interest centers on reactions and properties of short-lived chemical intermediates. High-resolution, high-sensitivity, laser absorption methods are augmented by high-temperature, flow-tube reaction kinetics studies with mass-spectrometric sampling. These experiments provide information on the energy levels, structures and reactivity of molecular free radical species and, in turn, provide new tools for the study of energy flow and chemical bond cleavage in radicals involved in chemical systems. The experimental work is supported by theoretical studies using time-dependent quantum wavepacket calculations, which provide insight into energy flow among the vibrational modes of polyatomic molecules and interference effects in multiple-surface dynamics.

Book excerpt: Remarkable developments in the spectroscopy field regarding ultrashort pulse generation have led to the possibility of producing light pulses ranging from 50 to5 fs and frequency tunable from the near infrared to the ultraviolet range. Such pulses enable us to follow the coupling of vibrational motion to the electronic transitions in molecules and

Book Molecular Dynamics and Spectra I Diatomic Rotation and Vibration

Download or read book Molecular Dynamics and Spectra I Diatomic Rotation and Vibration written by Kent R. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pure rotational and vibrational-rotational absorption bands for a diatomic are calculated directly from classical molecular dynamics, classical linear response theory and classical statistical mechanical ensemble averaging with the use of simple quantum corrections. The experimental spectral band intensities and contours are well reproduced for CO from dilute gas phase through solution in compressed Ar to solution in liquid Ar by these 'Newtonian' classical spectral calculations. The typical evolution seen in vibrational spectra from multiple-peaked gas phase bands to single-peaked solution bands is observed. The 'Newtonian' gas phase calculations also match quantum and correspondence principle classical spectral calculations. This molecular dynamic approach may be applied to compute the spectra of complex molecules or liquids for which a normal mode analysis may be impractical, and may also be extended to nonequilibrium systems, for example to compute transient vibrational spectra during chemical reactions. Book Investigation of Complex Molecular Dynamics in the Gas Phase Using Femtosecond Four wave Mixing Spectroscopy

Download or read book Investigation of Complex Molecular Dynamics in the Gas Phase Using Femtosecond Four wave Mixing Spectroscopy written by Abraham Vamattathil Scaria and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrafast spectroscopy is one of the most active areas of research in chemical physics. Understanding the ultrafast behavior of molecules, and influencing it with the help of laser fields may lead to the ultimate goal of controlling the flow and outcome of chemical reactions. This thesis work focuses on the investigation and control of molecular dynamics using time-resolved four-wave mixing (FWM) techniques in gas phase samples. Femtosecond FWM spectroscopy has established itself as a powerful tool to uncover molecular dynamics on ultrafast time scales. The femtosecond time resolution combined with a background-free, highly collimated coherent signal makes the approach unique for studying the dynamics especially under conditions of low concentrations. In gas phase, the elementary reaction paths can be directly probed without the interference of solvent molecules. A comparative study of the molecular dynamics in the gas phase and condensed phase gives a detailed picture on the effect of environment. Utilization of Raman as well as optical resonances in FWM spectroscopy provided high selectivity with respect to the type of molecular dynamics observed in the transient signal. New schemes of FWM spectroscopy, which employs an initial pump pulse along with a fully time resolved FWM process, were devised to monitor also the dynamics of higher lying excited states. A feed back controlled optimization process in a FWM scheme is used to selectively excite or suppress vibrational modes in gas phase and liquid phase of the same molecule. The results of the experiments performed using different FWM techniques to monitor, understand, and also to control diverse aspects of molecular dynamics in different systems are presented and discussed.

Book Reactive Vibrational Relaxationin the Gas Phase and on Surfaces

Download or read book Reactive Vibrational Relaxationin the Gas Phase and on Surfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our research into the chemical properties of highly vibrationally excited molecules has revealed a strong connection between large amplitude vibrational motion and the ability of a molecule to accept or donate electrons. In this proposal, we explain the work leading up to this insight and suggest ways to further test our understanding of this phenomenon. We suggest two experiments to extrapolate these results to completely new kinds of chemical encounters: the vibrational enhancement of electron capture and the direct observation of vibrational promotion of an electron transfer reaction. This work may have significant implications for electron scavenging around re-entry vehicles and accompanying communications blackouts.

Book Gas Phase and Surface Reactivity of Highly Vibrationally and Translationally Excited Molecules

Download or read book Gas Phase and Surface Reactivity of Highly Vibrationally and Translationally Excited Molecules written by Alec Wodtke and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the gas-phase and gas-surface collision dynamics of highly vibrationally excited NO is necessary to model the rovibrational population distribution and infrared signatures of this important molecules in the upper atmosphere. Energy and momentum exchange between gas phase molecules and surfaces (especially oxidized surfaces) is also an important factor in the calculation of satellite drag coefficients. In this research the stimulated emission pumping method is used in combination with conventional molecular beams techniques to control the vibrational excitation, quantum state identity and collision energy of reactants in gas phase and gas-surface reactions. Results allow a better understanding of the collision dynamics controlling the state-specific population of vibrationally excited NO in the upper atmosphere and around satellites in low earth orbit.
