The vacuum criteria and chamber design are reviewed, including a discussion of the weld joint geometries. The critical fabrication process parameters for meeting the design requirements are discussed. The experiences of the prototype chamber fabrication program are presented. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this study is to obtain insights into the dynamic coupled behavior of the quadrupole magnet and the girder assembly, and an assessment of the potential for unacceptable vibration levels which would require redesign of the quadrupole and/or girder mounting system(s). Specific objectives include determination of vibrational characteristics (natural frequencies, damping, mode shapes, and transfer functions) of the coupled magnet/girder system, measurement of response amplitudes of forced excitation and ambient floor motion, and calculation of magnification factors associated with the observed coupled vibration modes. In the Phase 1 tests the 0.8 meter quadrupole was mounted to the girder with a prototypic mount and excitation was primarily by an electromagnetic exciter or the result of ambient floor motion, with the exception of Test 7, which was impulse excited. In the Phase 2 tests the excitation was primarily by impulse with only a few tests with ambient floor excitation. A strong, coupled magnet/girder mode response occurs at frequency of 7.62 Hz resulting in very large magnification factors (low damping values) and large displacements. It appears that a low frequency rigid body mode of the magnet coincides with a girder mode frequency. The Phase 2 tests show the effect of jackscrew conditions on system response. When the pedestal bolts were loose, the jackscrew/pedestal assembly deflected slightly from its initial vertical position, resulting in a shift in position of the jackshaft within the screw assembly. The result was a significant reduction of frequency and a large increase in damping.

The 26.5-m-long prototype sector will be assembled within a full-scale magnet and tunnel mockup to study interspacial component relationships for maintenance, as well as the vacuum system operational performance. Each completed vacuum section is mounted as an integral part of the modular structure that contains the magnets and magnet power supplies on a common base. Unique automatic machine welding designs and techniques are employed in the fabrication of the aluminium vacuum chambers from extrusions. Special chamber bending procedures and measurements checks are used to maintain the required flatness of the insider chamber light gap surfaces. Photo-electron yields due to low-energy photons in the narrow channel gap of the vacuum chamber and their potential effects on the overall outgassing rate are found to be negligible. 9 refs., 5 figs.

Section No. 1, a short straight section, is representative in these tests of Sections No. 3 and No. 5 as well. Section No. 2 is the longer curved section used within the dipole bend magnets and is representative of the similar Section No. 4. The combination of Sections No. 1 and No. 2 joined by a connected bellows was mounted as presently planned for the final installation. This afforded an early testing of chamber positional stability after bakeout cycling. Tests of chamber dimensional stability were also made during vacuum cycling.
