Book excerpt: 'I WANT TO INSPIRE PEOPLE. I WANT SOMEONE TO LOOK AT ME AND SAY: "BECAUSE OF YOU I DIDN'T GIVE UP".' Goals is a very personal and deeply-moving collection of life-affirming and inspirational real-life stories from which Chelsea and Italy football legend Gianluca Vialli has drawn great strength and resolve during his battle with pancreatic cancer. The stories and the individuals involved have been selected by Vialli because they have offered him comfort and inspiration at the time of his greatest challenge, and he feels that they can do the same for many of us, whatever it might be that we are facing. The result is a beautifully-written and touching narrative which is by turns vital and poignant, spine-tingling and heart-rending. The very last story in Goals is Vialli's own, bravely and movingly chronicling his battle with this cruel illness.

Book Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle Gullit And Vialli

Download or read book Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle Gullit And Vialli written by Chris Wright and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle, Gullit And Vialli Chelsea season ticket holder Chris Wright was 10-years old when Glenn Hoddle took charge as player / manager at Stamford Bridge in June 1993. Hoddle proved to be the catalyst for change at the London club as during the following seven years the Blues were transformed from also-rans to serial silverware winners. In Blue Days, Chris shares his experiences as a young lad growing up supporting Chelsea during what was a truly memorable era. In July 1995, Hoddle persuaded Dutch superstar Ruud Gullit to join his football revolution at the Bridge and young Chris was mesmerised by the midfield maestro's talents. In May 1996, Hoddle left Chelsea to become England manager and Gullit stepped up to replace him as Blues boss whilst continuing to play. Legendary Italian trio Roberto Di Matteo, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola joined the 'sexy football' party and Chelsea marched on to Wembley where they won the FA Cup - a fitting tribute to much-loved director Matthew Harding, killed in a helicopter crash in October 1996. Midway through the following season, controversial Chelsea chairman Ken Bates fired Gullit and installed Vialli as player / manager. In spite of the drama, the campaign still brought glory as the Italian steered the Blues to triumphs in the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup finals. Over the course of the next two years, Chelsea won the Super Cup, played in the Champions League, almost won the Premier League and in May 2000 won the FA Cup again. Vialli's status as a Blues legend was secured, but less than four months later he was sacked by Bates. Chris is able to reflect on what had been a whirlwind few years at the Bridge and in Blue Days his vivid memories shine through. There's no doubt that Roman Abramovich took Chelsea to the next level when he bought the Club in 2003, but as you will read in the pages of this book the seeds for the stellar success that followed were sown by Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit and Gianluca Vialli.

Book excerpt: How to stop drinking, stay stopped, and develop emotional skills for a life of excitement and connection ... without the hangover. “No thanks—I’m not drinking tonight.” In a culture that equates alcohol with enjoyment and social acceptance, making this simple statement can make us feel like we’re depriving or even punishing ourselves. “When we realize we don’t want to drink anymore or can no longer drink safely, it can feel like the only choices are to spiral out of control or embrace a joyless life,” says psychotherapist and sobriety expert Veronica Valli. “But it’s not true! Sobriety can be a path filled with fun, excitement, belonging, relaxation, and romance.” Soberful offers a practical and straightforward program on how to get sober and stay sober by increasing your self-worth, energy, and participation in life. Valli begins by debunking widespread beliefs about alcohol and sobriety, including the illusion that alcohol itself is the problem. Then she takes you into the heart of her method for building an alcohol-free life that works—the Five Pillars of Sustainable Sobriety: • Movement—Taking care of your body for physical and emotional health • Connection—Using self-compassion as a foundation for creating healthy and authentic relationships • Balance—Learning how to disarm the triggers that make you want to drink • Process—Validating, honoring, and accepting the past to move forward into the future • Growth—How to keep changing, keep learning, and keep choosing to stay sober throughout the journey of your life “When we change how we experience the world, we can stop trying to escape our feelings with alcohol,” Valli says. As a leader and pioneer in the field with 21 years of sobriety, Valli now shares the same steps that worked for her and her clients. Written with gentle humor and compassion, Soberful provides a road map to a life beyond drinking—one that is expansive, fulfilling, and joyously free.

Book Blue Tomorrow

Download or read book Blue Tomorrow written by Mark Meehan and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its formation in 1905, Chelsea have been regarded as the most glamorous of clubs. Visitors to the Bridge have included Hollywood actresses, Prime Ministers, Cabinet Ministers and even an American Secretary of State complete with Secret Service entourage. But while famous names seem attracted to Chelsea's proximity to London's West End, the team has often disappointed. More recently Chelsea have become one of the most successful of the new breed of Premiership clubs. Under Bates, Stamford Bridge has become home to 39 businesses ranging from travel agencies to banks, restaurants and hotels to insurance companies, with the express aim of insuring his football club against the inconsistencies and dangerous internal feuding that have hamstrung previous chairmen. Over the past 6 years Chelsea has undergone a revolution, but along with progress' has come rampant commercialism -- as one Chelsea fan noted, loyalty is measured by how much you can spend rather than how much you care. The life-long emotional bond that forms between a football club and its supporters is now almost a weakness, there to be exploited by the money-drunk millionaires that have taken over our sacred game'. Life-long Chelsea fan Mark Meehan discovers a club in a hurry: an ageing chairman frantic to win the championship before he retires, a club facing mounting debts, an expensively assembled playing staff and a new manager brought in because the old one could only deliver five trophies in three seasons. Clearly, nearly 20 years after assuming control, Ken Bates is still chasing his elusive "Blue Tomorrow" -- but, as Meehan discovers, he is in danger of losing control of his own club with potentially disastrous consequences.
