Download or read book The Italian Short Story through the Centuries written by Roberto Nicosia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of thirteen essays brings together Italian and American scholars to present a cooperative analysis of the Italian short story, beginning in the fourteenth century with Giovanni Boccaccio and arriving at the twentieth century with Alberto Moravia and Anna Maria Ortese. Throughout the book, the contributors carefully and intentionally unpack and explain the development of the short story genre and demonstrate the breadth of themes – cultural, historical and linguistic – detailed in these narratives. Dedicated to a genre “devoted to lightness and flexibility, as well as quickness, exactitude, visibility and multiplicity,” this collection paints a careful and exacting picture of an important part of both Italian and literary history.
Download or read book L altrove quotidiano written by Stefano Iatosti and published by Enzo Delfino Editore. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Teaching a Dark Chapter written by Daniela R. P. Weiner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching a Dark Chapter explores how textbook narratives about the Fascist/Nazi past in Italy, East Germany, and West Germany followed relatively calm, undisturbed paths of little change until isolated "flashpoints" catalyzed the educational infrastructure into periods of rapid transformation. Though these flashpoints varied among Italy and the Germanys, they all roughly conformed to a chronological scheme and permanently changed how each "dark past" was represented. Historians have often neglected textbooks as sources in their engagement with the reconstruction of postfascist states and the development of postwar memory culture. But as Teaching a Dark Chapter demonstrates, textbooks yield new insights and suggest a new chronology of the changes in postwar memory culture that other sources overlook. Employing a methodological and temporal rethinking of the narratives surrounding the development of European Holocaust memory, Daniela R. P. Weiner reveals how, long before 1968, textbooks in these three countries served as important tools to influence public memory about Nazi/Fascist atrocities. As Fascism had been spread through education, then education must play a key role in undoing the damage. Thus, to repair and shape postwar societies, textbooks became an avenue to inculcate youths with desirable democratic and socialist values. Teaching a Dark Chapter weds the historical study of public memory with the educational study of textbooks to ask how and why the textbooks were created, what they said, and how they affected the society around them.

Book excerpt: A comparative and interdisciplinary study, Rome, Ravenna, and Venice explores how three cities preserved and remoulded their common Byzantine past. It sheds light on how far these societies were the heirs of the Empire and how they imagined a new part-Roman, part-Italian identity in the centuries after their imperial links were severed.
Download or read book There is not any event horizon written by Carlo Maria Pace and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author, by taking into account also the contribution of the gravitational potential energy to the determination of the gravitational masses of the particles in a gravitational field (contrary to the erroneous common use), finds that for the particles with rest mass greater than zero there is always an escape velocity (less than the velocity of light in vacuum c) from any gravitational field and that the particles with rest mass equal to zero are always free to go away from any gravitational field. Consequently, there is not any event horizon, and therefore there is not any black hole. Moreover, the author also shows that the presence of an event horizon would imply the violation of the principle of conservation of energy. In particular, all this is confirmed also by the symmetry with respect to time of the Einstein’s field equation of the General Theory of Relativity and by the correct solutions of this same equation. Consequently, this book can be useful also for explaining in a linear way the possibility of the Big Bang and the possibility of a cyclic universe. Finally, the experimental results are compatible so far with this book.
Download or read book There is not any black hole written by Carlo Maria Pace and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author, by starting from the Einstein’s field equation of the General Theory of Relativity, corrects the Schwarzschild solution, and shows that, in the correct Schwarzschild solution, there is not any event horizon and therefore there is not any black hole. Moreover, the author extends all this to its direct consequences, in particular correcting the Kerr solution, the Reissner-Nordstrøm solution and the Kerr-Newman solution. Then, the author extends these four correct solutions (of Schwarzschild, of Kerr, of Reissner-Nordstrøm and of Kerr-Newman) also to the case in which the cosmological constant is greater than zero. On the other hand, the author, by starting from the general form of the Einstein’s field equation of the General Theory of Relativity, demonstrates also in general the non-existence of any event horizon, and therefore the non-existence of any black hole, in the field of application of the General Theory of Relativity. Finally, the author also explores the consequences of all this on the entropy of the Universe, on the Hawking emission process, on the Big Bang Theory and on the astronomical observations.

Book excerpt: Each of the contributions in this book addresses - through its own peculiar perspective, method and experimental style - a new way to approach the role of transcendence in socio-cultural life.In the Occidental history of ideas, the notion of transcendence has received at least three canonical articulations that are challenged by this book: religious (Judeo-Christian traditions), philosophical (Platonic-intellectual universality of ideas), and scientific (the objective and technological turn of knowledge). Nonetheless, it is with the rise of cybernetics, with its digital and virtual modalities of systems, networks, and knowledge, that our human environment emerges as a source of knowledge in itself --.
Download or read book Roman Aquileia written by Natale Barca and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how a military colony became a large, impressive and prosperous city. Legendary for its walls and port, it was able to play a basic role in the great strategy of ancient Rome between the Po and the Danube, spanning the centuries from its foundation (181 BC) to the fateful days of blood and violence of its fall (AD 452). Based on a study of ancient sources, contemporary literature and the latest archaeological research, and written in a fast-paced and accessible style, the book provides a portrait of Aquileia in a diachronic key, under various aspects; it sets the city in the complex societal and political system of the time, gives a thorough account of the great events of which it was a protagonist or victim and offers detailed portraits of key figures, whether famous or less well-known, and analyses of epic battles. Combining academic scholarship with storytelling, biographies of important personalities and stories of political intrigue, assassinations and full-scale warfare which narrate the evocative epic of the rise, decline and disappearance of ancient cities, the volume highlights a significant topic in Roman political, social, economic, religious and military history, but one which has been inexplicably neglected in the Anglo-Saxon world until now.
