Book excerpt: En respuesta a la inquietud planteada por las autoridades de transporte de la Unión Europea en el "Libro blanco de los transportes" del año 2001, referida a orientar la política de transportes hacia mejores condiciones de competencia modal, para mejorar el desempeño del sistema de transportes, Alemania, Austria, Dinamarca, y Reino Unido, así como también Suiza, han implementado o estudian la implementación de una nueva tasa que grave el transporte de carga por carretera de manera proporcional a la distancia recorrida, en contrapartida al sistema de tarificación anterior, que suponía un valor fijo por año y por tipo de vehículo - la "euroviñeta".
