This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vestiges of the Historic Anglo-Hebrews in East Anglia: With Appendices and an Apropos Essay This volume is one of the effects issuing from the labours of the "Royal Archaeological Institute for Great Britain and Ireland." Having been asked, in the spring of this year, by some friends interested in the researches and prosperity of that useful Association, to contribute a paper at their annual meeting, to be held this year at Bury St. Edmund's; I acquiesced, and fixed upon the subject which gives the title to this publication. I considered it a proper theme for an Essay to be brought under the notice of an assembly of archaeologists, who were to meet in the town which bears the name of one of the kings of the East Angles. The subject commended itself to the Honorary Secretary of the Institute, and I forthwith set to work to isolate some materials for this particular purpose, from MSS. on kindred subjects, upon which many a year's hard work and study had been bestowed. When I had arranged the joints of my skeleton, I began to feel apprehensive about its probable proportions, should I venture to clothe it with the sinews, flesh, and skin commensurate with its gigantic stature. I therefore, by sundry expedients, reduced the structure of my skeleton to a dwarfish size; but even then I was dubious as to whether it might not be considered out of proportion, for the time usually allowed for one paper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History IN the following pages we have attempted to bring together the raw materials of the history of the Jews in England, hitherto scattered among many thousand volumes or tracts, but some day, we hope, to be properly digested and suitably presented in artistic form. Our aim has been to prepare the way for this consummation, by arranging our materials in such a way as to make them most easily available for the students of anglo-jewish history - ii any such there be. We have accordingly classi fied the entries, and under each class we have arranged them alphabetically or chronologically, according as we considered either method of arrangement more suitable, letting uniformity give way to utility. As so much of the work is already arranged alphabetically, and so much else is anonymous, and as our immediate purpose is to subserve history rather than bibliography, an Index did not seem necessary. We have prefixed to the lists of books some account of the mss. Containing information on anglo-jewish history. Here we have been working on almost entirely virgin soil, which was scarcely even touched by the investigations connected with the late anglo-jewish Historical Exhibition. Where possible it has been our aim to give some short account of the contents of the various mss., so that the student may judge whether it is worth consultation. The bibliography itself is divided into three parts, deal ing respectively with the Pre-expulsion period up to 1290. Book Herbert of Bosham

Download or read book Herbert of Bosham written by Michael Staunton and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth study of an important writer and close associate of Becket. Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194) was one of the most brilliant, original and versatile thinkers of the twelfth century. Herbert was Thomas Becket's closest confidant, a theologian, biblical commentator, historian, letter-writer and Hebrew scholar; he wrote a Life of St Thomas unlike any other contemporary biography, produced one of the most visually-arresting illuminated Bible books of his age, and composed a commentary on the Psalms inspired by Jewish scholarship. His uncompromising character, and the originality and complexity of his thought, meant that Herbert's works were largely ignored during his lifetime and forgotten for centuries, but more recently they have begun to receive the attention and approval that their author insisted they deserved. The chapters in this book, the first to be devoted to Herbert's life and works, examine his eventful and troubled life, his remarkable corpus of works, and how they came to be neglected and rediscovered. They provide an introduction to his life, writings and legacy, direction to existing scholarship on the subject, and new insights on, interpretations of and discoveries about anidiosyncratic representative of the "twelfth-century renaissance". MICHAEL STAUNTON is Associate Professor of History at University College Dublin. Contributors: Julie Barrau, Laura Cleaver, Matthew Doyle, Anne J. Duggan, Christopher de Hamel, Sabina Flanagan, Michael Staunton, Nicholas Vincent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though many scholars will acknowledge the Anglo-Saxon character of black American nationalism, few have dealt with the imperialistic ramifications of this connection. Now, Nigerian-born scholar Tunde Adeleke reexamines nineteenth-century black American nationalism, finding not only that it embodied the racist and paternalistic values of Euro-American culture but also that nationalism played an active role in justifying Europe's intrusion into Africa. Adeleke looks at the life and work of Martin Delany, Alexander Crummell, and Harry McNeal Turner, demonstrating that as supporters of the mission civilisatrice ("civilizing mission") these men helped lay the foundation for the colonization of Africa. By exposing the imperialistic character of nineteenth-century black American nationalism, Adeleke reveals a deep historical and cultural divide between Africa and the black diaspora. Black American nationalists had a clear preference--Euro-America over Africa--and their plans were not designed for the immediate benefit of Africans but to enhance their own fortunes. Arguing that these men held a strong desire for cultural affinity with Europe, Adeleke makes a controversial addition to the ongoing debate concerning the roots of black nationalism and Pan-Africanism.
